Was she executed by 'breaking on the wheel'?

The condemned is spread-eagled on a large wagon wheel, arms and legs tied to spokes, hands and feet positioned on the wheel rim. 91 I would never have thought this was from the 1400s. The expressive facial expressions, not wooden, the perspective, not flat, and the brilliant color. I could spend a lot of time just studying it and what it reveals about the time and place. I wonder if his use of 3D perspective was an influence on later art.

Totally unimportant but The woman on the right looks amused by what she is reading. I thought of her looking at a velum edition of 101 Elephant Jokes that I had, and laughed at, in grade school.

137 In personal news, I had a job interview this morning. First one in a while (I'd honestly kind of given up). A friend from an old workplace reached out to me saying he'd heard that a mutual from the old company, now at a new company, had reached out to him, but he had just started a new job and thought of me instead.

So, I interviewed with the old PM who is now a director of a small consulting firm alongside her PM, both of whom also worked at the old company, and the conversation was good.

I got an email for a second interview about fifteen minutes later.

I haven't told Dolley about these because every time I lose out on a position she gets more depressed than I do.

So, fingers crossed.

And even if I do get the job, I'll keep making the YT videos because that's where the real money's at.

Overall, yes, it's longer than it needs to be. But the memoir stories are all fascinating; we get "The Notebooks of Lazarus Long"; and LL's jaunt to 1916 America is (despite the incest stuff) vigorous and impossible to put down.

The Number of the Beast -- was dull and worse, and we all thought RAH had lost it. But he had a brain tumor, and after his recovery he came roaring back with Friday.

We did back to back cruises. We had one scheduled, then Dolley found a deal for another that came back the day before the original one left.

I got sick on the last day of the first cruise, spent most of the day in between in bed (after managing to survive a few hours at the Kennedy Space Center), and felt better through the second. Junior has the best immune system and the sickness bypassed him completely. Second Junior dealt with a sore throat for a bit, but was fine. Dolley got hit hard with it a few days after me and we're both just a bit snotty for a few days.

But, ate decent food. Watched the ocean. Watched a few movies (The Mandalorian and Grogu is...perfectly fine and forgettable).

Lovely & very interesting but likely wouldn't hang.

Don't care much for Job nor Friday. Read once, discarded. And part of it was that RAH developed odd ideas about human sexuality that he fixated upon from his first wife, Leslyn when he fixated on swinging. And he bought into the ludicrous ideas that are now shown to be false of the Margaret Meade school of sociology. Outside of hard science, Heinlein proved an easy mark for bad economics (To Us the Living), bad sociology (Glory Road, Time Enough for Love, I Will Fear No Evil) etc.

His official biographer had to put it delicately but his obsession ended up tainting his writings when publishing went into all sex all the time. It is pretty grotesque to read Heinlein admission to Ginny that he could not be faithful to her and by implication wanted her to be as perverted as he was.

And Ginny, for whatever reason, did not mention to Robert that he was infertile, not her as he supposed and preachy Heinlein, which he was in Job and a few other books was never appealing at all. So no, having read the real Book of Job, I found his attempt to redo it both juvenile and unlikable. Friday was simply forgettable and his attempts to put controversy in it like the rape of the main character was a nasty trick not integral to the plot.

If you want a better allegory, try John Myers Myers book, Silverlock which cribs Bunyan.

I outgrew Heinlein and his obsessions--if I read anything of his, it is classic Heinlein era now where he did not lean on the prurient to sell an idea like he did in his later years.
