Wednesday Night ONT - August 12, 2026 [TRex]

08122026-schlieren_knife_edge.jpg

Good evening Horde! The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. The bar is open and (mostly) re-stocked with Tab. Only the best for the Horde...

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. If you're a troll, go away.

This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn, and Bill Kristol free zone. Please.

[Top photo from NASA: Shock waves are visible around a T-38 trainer aircraft during NASA's Air-to-Air Background Oriented Schlieren flights in 2019. Schlieren imaging makes normally invisible changes in air density visible, giving researchers a way to see the same shock waves that can create sonic booms on the ground.]

Happy Birthday!

ICYMI - congratulations to the Blogfather for 25 years of InstaPundit.

Like many others, we found InstaPundit following 9/11. We read things we did not see elsewhere and found other writers and blogs we wouldn't have found otherwise. Maintaining staying power and relevance on the internet for over 25 years without burning out is impressive.

From the Blogfather: Some thoughts on InstaPundit's 25th bloggiversary.

One of the big lessons of the past twenty five years is that the preening self-regard of the laptop class is largely unjustified. There's a lot of ignored wisdom out there.

Third, speaking of the laptop class, the press is much, much worse than I thought it was at the beginning of this exercise, and I was pretty skeptical about the press then.

Read the whole thing.
Heh.

A Physicist Rigged His Pet Hamster's Wheel to Upload to Strava. It Runs Surprisingly Far Every Night

Thijs de Buck, an MRI physicist based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, recently posted on Reddit that he built a speed and distance tracker for his hamster's wheel, with the data automatically uploaded to Mollie's own Strava account. Mollie, his 10-month-old hamster, is now committed to logging nightly runs with distance, pace, and time.

One recent activity showed 6.06 miles in 4 hours and 37 minutes. The next night, Mollie logged 5.55 miles in 3 hours and 56 minutes.

And the little guy's not exactly phoning it in. De Buck said Mollie is averaging almost 10 kilometers per night, with a current record of 10.8 kilometers after the first week of tracking.

"I really believe he'll be able to exceed that soon," he said.

Mollie also has a weirdly consistent schedule for a hamster. Over one seven-day stretch, he started within the same 10-minute window on five nights, between 9:54 and 10:04 p.m. He tends to run in short bursts, sometimes reaching about 4 to 5 kilometers per hour on the live monitor, then hops off for water.

How U.S. Navy Pilots Really Get Their Callsigns

Let's pause a bit and talk about the 'rules' for callsigns.

It's rumored that Air Force fighter jocks get to pick their own callsigns... which is where you get things like 'Ripper' and 'Ace' and 'Thor.'

Not in the Navy.

Callsigns are bequeathed for doing something stupid or memorable. The more you fight the more it sticks.

Usually a new guy in a squadron is given something like 'FNG' (Fucking New Guy) or 'New Jack' or 'Don't Speak.'

Eventually, someone does something noteworthy, and the King (or Queen) of the JOPA [Junior Officer Protection Agency] calls a kangaroo court known as a 'callsign review board.'

Niche YouTube Channel of the Week

Tonight's feature is a YouTube channel called The Slow Motion Guys. No, the channel is not about guys that move slowly. It is about two friends armed with camera equipment to show activities in super-super-super slow motion.

Some of it feels a little like a science class. Some of it feels a little like a technology class. Some of it feels like madness and giggles purely for the sake of having fun.

Over 45 million people have watched their video on how a TV works. Their video showing popcorn popping has over 24 million views. Spinning a record to pieces? Spinning a CD to destruction? Paint vibrating on a speaker? Airbag deploy? Camera shutter? They've got it all. When things happen so quickly, we miss what really happens.

They've been at it for 15 years and have over 15 million subscribers. This is a favorite:

Difficult to call it an unknown channel but it absolutely qualifies as a niche channel. It is exactly the type of content that could not survive elsewhere but thrives on a narrowcasting internet platform.

This is absolutely, categorically, and completely false.

47 I'm so old I remember (I was in 7th grade) the original song "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James and the Shondells. I had a transistor radio, man. I liked it. However, I did not understand most lyrics of songs til college as I was still playing sports with boys. I did not know what they were hiding (a slow learner).

I do remember memorizing the Periodic Table in pre-med chemistry with many college boys. Who were apparently as traumatized by the university class as I was as no one asked me out. It remains a mystery, as I was finally ready.

Hope you all are well and fighting commies and muzzies daily. Goodnight.

Not in the Navy.

Callsigns are bequeathed for doing something stupid or memorable. The more you fight the more it sticks.

In my scout troop, the youths set one rule, "Own Your Nickname, We're Not Changing It". One time a scout noted that he had no nickname despite hsving been in the troop for a couple of years. I informed him that one almost always acquired a nickname after having done something extremely stupid. From this, the young man told his mother that "Mr. Krebs thinks I'm smart." "Why is that?" "Because he said you earn a nickname if you do something stupid, and I have no nickname."

I told his mother that I never said that he had not done stupid things. What had bappened was, of the many stupid things he had done, none rose to the level of being stupid enough to call down a nickname upon him.

They need to make this movie!

We got screwed out of black Superman. We deserve this.

As trans onscreen representation takes a hit in Hollywood, Lilly Wachowski is attempting to make a film with an all-transgender cast… if only the industry will let her.

The Matrix co-auteur recently explained that despite some excitement over the script, financiers “really don’t want to make” her dystopian political thriller The Hunted, which is co-written with partner Mickey Ray Mahoney and budgeted at $10 million, due to the film’s “wall-to-wall trans cast.”

“People like it, but they really don’t want to make it because it’s wall-to-wall trans cast,” said Wachowski on KCRW’s The Business podcast. “I have to get creative and figure out different ways that I can get this in front of people.”

They work. The excesses of the original have aged well. I wrote a scathing denunciation of the sequel, and have never been happier to have been completely wrong.

As a side note, I considered trying to switch over to the Navy so that I could score the trifecta, having done Army and Air Force.

Sure, it might, or at least burst into flame, in addition to giving you one hell of a tongue burned by caustic.

Thing is, though, reactive metals like the alkalis are stored in an oil to stop them being exposed to air or water, so you'd have to contend with that gustatory delight first and foremost, as it would coat the metallic morsel.

151 It's rumored that Air Force fighter jocks get to pick their own callsigns...

Not entirely. Real callsigns are assigned - albeit less formally - by others. Sometimes they get assigned right out of pilot training*. Some people manage to not do anything ... notable after that. Others get picked up for being an oddball or quirky**. And not just pilots, but crewmembers and anyone pilot-adjacent.

Now, some people are lame enough they do pick their own. Nobody cares enough to assign them one. Nobody socializes enough with them to see the sorts of social faux pas that often lead to them.

(* "Flame-face" Martin. Yes, there was alcohol involved.)
(** "Skippy" - assigned because he packed peanut butter when we went to Thailand for exercises. He really couldn't handle Thai food.)

158 It’s a good show to put a small cube of elemental sodium into water - quite a powerful reaction. I remember sodium like that has to kept in some kind of oil, which it won’t react with.

I forget. It might just be something that sits at too high a temperature for too long? I would say Brit Lass's beeswax went considerably higher than 212. I recall reading some things were worse than others.

It's also bad luck because it has to do with existing bubbles in the glass. I personally wouldn't heat anything in pyrex in the microwave for very long.

166 The big Pyrex bowl in the pic, the yellow one, was a common sight in homes. They had other colors too, but that must have been a favorite.

Fire King made good stuff too, be on the lookout for that. Anchor-Hoching I think, out of Ohio. Owens Corning out of New York state was a fine company as well.

I've had a bunch over the years. In Army BCT, the cadre called me "Cliffie" but my fellow trainees called me "Frasier."

Kind of funny generational Cheers/Frasier divide. But in the ANG, I never really got a callsign/moniker.

173 No, I would bet it is due to the very uneven heating characteristics of microwave heating. One portion of the food will be almost cold, the other side blazing hot. An oven is nice steady, even heat.

178 Old Pyrex is great. New Pyrex is shit.
They are using a different kind of sand or something now.
A few years ago I bought new Pyrex to cook Christmas Eve dinner. Took it out of the oven and it exploded.

Uppercase label - PYREX is made in Europe and uses the original formulation of Borosilicate glass.

Lower case(sort of sloppy font) label is American and cheap need it up.years ago using tempered "regular" glass.

The American crap will put up with high heat better than standard glass, but it won't take quick temperature changes anywhere near as well.as the European or "old" Pyrex.

Posted by: buddhaha at August 12, 2026 11:11 PM (drwAN)

179 You can make a bowl of plain old water erupt/explode in a microwave by superheating it, and then disturbing it. People get hurt sometimes.

180 The way to tell, by the way, is the font. “PYREX” versus “Pyrex”. Tupperware fucked up their line too. Switched over to a cheaper plastic. I think the older stuff had a depiction of a Seal on it. Get it?
