Yeah, they are near the top of my list of animals I never want to meet. Pure carnivores that can smell you miles away is not a good mix. I'd add Bengal Tigers and Sloth Bears to the list. Sloth bears, IMO, are the worst of the bunch. They'll take on a full grown tiger for kicks and giggles.

The Perseid meteor shower is ramping up for the peak on the night of the 12th-13th. After local midnight will be about the best time to look. Look to the NE, radiant is in Perseus as the name suggests.

This is the debris trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle. It has a period of about 130 years, but a perihelion of about 1 AU. Back in the '70s, they got worried it could hit Erf in August of 2126. It's orbital path, which we a plowing into now, is within the earth-moon distance.

But subsequent observations and refinements have shown no threat to earth for at least 2000 years. It's 16 miles in diameter, and if it hit earth, that would be all she wrote for us.
