First World Problems...

Has the entire world gone mad?

I went to the closest supermarket to buy a few things...milk, cream, bananas (don't ask, but I think they are disgusting), and Heath bars for Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream that I want to make.

Never mind that I last bought a Heath Bar in 1979. THAT'S NOT THE POINT!

All I could find were the stupid mini bars that are individually wrapped. Just imagine the vast amount of extra work! Unwrapping each one? That's crazy!

An America that doesn't have full-size Heath bars isn't a country I want to live in.

8 Before I built on this hill, we had a trailer. No pressure regulator. Initially, no problems, cause we had a 2" water main.
Replaced it with 6" main. Blew out fittings regularly. Found out we were running about 110# pressure! I think codes are somewhere under 70#.

9 Heath bars aren’t quite so tasty as they used ta be.
They fucked up Reeses Peanut Butter cups too. I used to buy 2 or 3 of those and my arms would start tingling. Snickers are still pretty close.

Case in point, one of my favorite treats, the Klondike Original ice cream bars.

The chocolate dip seems much thinner than before, and the chocolate itself is almost tasteless. I'm done with Klondike bars.

Checking the pressure is a very good idea. I'm going to Lowes and getting a gauge.

The leaks are never at the fittings. My very first couple of leaks were in areas that I thought might have a stress explanation (hot water, in a bend etc) but I have had them in straight supported sections of cold water lines so I think it is defective.

58 I can still get regular size Heath Bars, thank goodness, as they are one of my favorites. For dietary and dental purposes I just take a small bite and let it dissolve slowly instead of chewing it. One bar is good for about five nibbles.

My other favorite was the Mars Bar. They are still made but thanks to the shit-for-brains management they are no longer offered for sale in the US, at least not in my area.

I used to like Reeses but the filling they now use tastes like gritty wallpaper paste. If I want the original taste, I'll put a dab of Jif or Skippy on a square of a Hershey bar.

First World problems indeed.

I used to order green beans from Sweet Maria's. Like most things, shipping costs have buggered everything. It was expensive then, too. But a large order made it pencil out. Green beans kept sealed up well keep almost indefinitely. A cast iron pan and a wooden spoon, and Bob's Yer Uncle.

The aroma of roasting coffee beans will probably get your neighbors to break into your home if you've any nearby. Be careful!

Best cup of coffee, well pot of coffee, I ever had was at a tiny open air restaurant at the top of equally tiny island in the BVI called Marina Cay. It was some Jamaican fancy thing and it was so good my one cup turned into a morning of drinking coffee and watching sailboats and girls in very small bikinis. The latter might have had some influence on my coffee enjoyment.

Took AIT at Fort Eustis, there was a large shopping mall right outside DC that one store had the largest coffee bean selection I've ever seen before or since. It was just an endless wall of beans. Probably intended for the Beautiful People.

Eustis (Even Uncle Sam Thinks It Sucks) has the Army Transportation Museum. I remember nothing much about it, but they do have the Johnny Quest style Jet Packs there on display. An early idea that didn't pan out. They couldn't really find a use for them, though they tried. The 90 second tops fuel range may have had something to do with it.

My father built 2 Heathkit tube amps, which he gifted to me.
Awesome amps, in the 25-35 watt range, which is all you needed back then. Wish I still had them. They would warm up a room nicely in the winter.

146 One weekend, about 5 of us took my car into D.C. to see the sights. After finally finding a parking spot, an old black guy in a large van who ran a tour service talked us into a guided deal. It was great money spent.

He knew where everything was, gave running commentary as we drove by all the monuments. He'd stop at Ford's Theater, or the Smithsonian or wherever, and say "Be back here in half an hour" and then we'd be off to see Arlington. Got to see the changing of the Guard, and even a tour of the White House. Best ten bucks I ever spent, or whatever it was.

There's no way we would have seen even half of it had we not ran into that old feller with the van.

174 It's not well known, but even National Park campgrounds were segregated. This issue came to a head by the 1930s, as the rule was "separate but equal" is OK, sorta kinda, if you squint. Except there weren't any campgrounds, because black folks didn't really go camping too much. Much hilarity ensued as southern politicians tried to thread that needle, and issues of federal jurisdiction and the rest of it.

Some of the parks like Shenandoah and Smoky Mountain were sort of hybrids, the land was donated to the federal government, but with caveats about existing state law taking precedence.

Well gas was 25 cents a gallon in 1948. Of course adjusted for inflation gas at 25 cents a gallon now costs $3.46 so it is about the same as we are paying today.
