THE MORNING RANT: About that “Bad” Jobs Report Last Week: Private-Sector Jobs Increased, Government Jobs Decreased

Federal Employment fell.png

[Chart is from Pew Research. See link below.]

Following the release of last week’s jobs report, which showed that total employment in the U.S. had dropped by 23,000 persons, there was a lot of high-fiving and chest bumping among Democrats and their NeverTrump “conservative” allies. The message they are triumphantly bleating is that the Trump economy is shedding jobs.

It’s partially true – the Trump economy is causing some people to lose their jobs, especially government workers and non-citizens. We elected Donald Trump to do just that.

Lost amidst all the triumphal “bad jobs report” noise is the fact that private-sector employment is increasing, with solid gains in manufacturing and construction jobs. This is consistent with the point I keep hammering in recent articles at The American Spectator, discussing how there is an explosion of industrial construction going on right now in the U.S.

This headline from Bloomberg was typical, but at least it did note that concurrent with lost jobs, the unemployment rate actually fell: “U.S. Employers Unexpectedly Shed Jobs; Unemployment Rate Falls

The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% as labor force participation continued to slide.

Yes, “labor force participation” by non-citizens decreased. But the unemployment rate keeps falling as actual U.S. citizens gain employment. Buried in this Bloomberg piece is another interesting number:

Private-sector payrolls rose by 30,000 for a second month…

So to be clear, private-sector employers are not actually shedding jobs, it’s government that is shedding jobs. As reported by NBC, the Bureau of Labor Statistics ”showed a 5,000 payroll gain in the manufacturing sector in July and an additional 22,000 roles in construction.

This CNBC piece further explains that ”The main reason for the red headline number was a loss of 53,000 government workers.”

The math works, and I’m not terribly bothered by this math: 53,000 displaced government workers were mostly offset by 30,000 new private sector jobs, resulting in a net loss of 23,000. I’d like to see continued momentum in both of these inputs – more reductions in government employment and accelerating private-sector job creation. To be clear, I don’t wish economic harm to those displaced government workers. I’d like for them to find gainful employment in the private sector.

I’m going to repeat myself on the political significance of reducing government employment. All of those “Reagan conservatives” in legacy media who incessantly state that “Trump is not a true conservative” spent decades promoting “smaller government.” Suckers like me contributed money and bought subscriptions, believing they meant it. They didn’t. Trump is now doing what Conservatism, Inc. pretended to advocate for, and now all those “Reagan conservatives” are allying with Democrats and the left to protect the government behemoth from Trump.

Here are a few more headlines about who is losing their jobs in the “Trump economy”:

“U.S. Employers Told to Dismiss Thousands of Immigrant Workers” [NY Times – 7/10/2026]

“Federal workforce shrank 10% in Trump’s first year back in office” [Pew Research – 3/13/2026]

“Employers Fear Labor Shortage as Many Immigrants Lose Protected Status” [NY Times – 7/26/2026]

“Laid-off H-1B workers return to India, face lower pay as Big Tech expands GCCs” [The American Bazaar – 7/09/2026]

“Is the American Dream fading? Inside the ‘reverse migration’ of Indian techies from US” [Firstpost – 8/034/2026]

This is why Trump was elected.

We need to be careful not to get swayed by headlines that conflate foreigners and government workers losing their jobs with what is going on regarding private-sector hiring of U.S. citizens. There is good news on that front, and it’s getting better.

Leftover from the New Deal where GOP reflexively kow towed to the bureaucratic class in practice while excoriating them in speeches.

This is what Faux News and most of Conservative Media TM does. Any of them could have done what Nick Shirley did years and years ago. Same with O'Keefe. They didn't. That tells you who they are--the junior partners in Uniparty that don't want to upset the senior partners aka the Democrats.

So they fart through their mouths on TV constantly about principles while taking it up the wazoo in practice but making bank from peddling their ass. And that is the Washington General GOPe, controlled opposition.

So, I presume the numbers being batted around do not include the uniformed armed services. 238K government drones out of work is probably about right for the number who are/were at/past retirement age.

I know the claims these were younger employees, but I'm doubting that claim. The ones near retirement have incentives.

It's down but federal salaries/benefits are just a rounding error in the federal budget compared with Medicaid, Social Security, and Medicare. And that is where the easy pickings to eliminate fraud exist.

Frankly, we would get a better class of Congress critters if we took them off the private grift dole and actually paid them in consequence to their business decisions on the budget. Deficit--they don't get paid, Surplus, they get a big wad of cash. Ban all other outside income for them and their family.

I think Millei is trying that out in Argentina. It would take constitutional amendments here which simply are not going to happen.

The Vance led fraud task force has already uncovered more than $230 billion in fraud from government spending and he claimed that was a conservative estimate. Also stopped another $56 billion in fraud that was set to go out the door. And they are only 6 months into the process.

Sooner or later that is going to add up to real money.

Bolsheviks in Russia were successful for one specific reason--the floundering WWI response by Russia and soldiers wanted to live. Those peasant soldiers turned around (some of them anyway) and served as the core for the asshole Bolsheviks to win over the Mensheviks.

By contrast, the color revolutions are more like coups than revolutions simply displacing the political opponents at the top while shoving their people in.

The French Revolution is more to the desire of the left in the US aka Jacobins. They believe in crashing the system will end up with them on top in the ensuing fight. And that was primarily an urban centered revolt, not the peasantry.

Not clear how that will work when the peasantry outside the cities in the US actually have a lot of firearms whereas peasants in France had no such thing. As the Anabaptist radicals found out in Reformation Germany--cities are death traps liable for sieges if you don't have field armies to keep them from being cut off.

As zombie pointed out, communism is the utopian end-state. Marx himself would agree that to be a "communist" was like a Christian staying his kingdom is not of this world. So when "communists" take over they don't institute communism - because they can't. Instead they institute a dictatorship of the proletariat. Usually calling it "democracy".
Saloth Sar and his boys just skipped over that step and did the perfect utopia immediately.

As someone who lived through that era and spent part of it on Capitol Hill during the early Reagan years, the problem was the same. The New Deal and ensuing Cold War warped the GOP party--they resolved to never cut back on the welfare state but to fight Communists abroad and in the US. Reagan was the first GOP president actually talking about rolling back government--Eisenhower, Nixon, and Ford didn't nor would have Dewey done it in 1948. The GOP became progressive at home (always had a progressive wing since the founding of it) and used Communism/Socialism as their rallying call.

So when Reagan sought to reverse big government, he had to fight his own party to obtain even minuscule gains and his second term became a series of compromises leading the Bushes and a return to big government--kindler, gentler Thousand Points of Light crapola rather than Reaganism. Most of those calling themselves Reaganites are actually Bush Republicans--concerned with form and process, not actually performance.

100 Seasonal losses? Regular summer school breaks and being amplified by the government's seasonal adjustment math rather than permanent mass layoffs.

Reportedly, while core state government administrative roles tend to stay stable, education components within local and state definitions heavily distort the monthly totals. The wider cooling in the labor market also reflects tighter municipal budgets as pandemic-era federal relief funds fully phase out.
---
Federal non-military employment: ~2.66 million workers (down from a recent peak of roughly 2.31 million to 3 million depending on "inclusion metrics" prior to 2025).

A cumulative reduction of over 350,000 jobs (nearly 12%) since early 2025 through buyouts, attrition, and policy changes. (Most were clearly able to retire and were hanging around to see the offers that always appear for the higher grade levels when there's a change of administration. I've heard the next bigger group retiring under FERS will be around January.)

Remember, O & Joe radically changed Federal civil service and Biden stacked the agencies with bodies.

Reagan, like Trump in his first term, was beset by GOPe traitors harkening back to the Nixon-Ford administration. He had to fill a lot of jobs and could only put some of his people in charge. He also wanted Paul Laxalt as VP but was forced to accept Bush to avoid a fight at the convention on the floor--people forget that GOPe tried to force Gerald Ford in as VP but co-president in fact on Reagan. He accepted Bush as VP in order to quell that rebellion.

The professional corporate wing of the GOP hates populism with a passion because it interferes with making a buck for them, their friends, and their donors by any means possible.

Much more than that as each government job actually decreases private sector jobs through regulation. in kalifornia in the early 2000s, if every 3 people hired 1 was government and 1 was for meeting new regulations from government hire. So only 1 person was actually making the private sector work out of 3 hires.

While I have big, big problems with Reagan - most of the issues that we're dealing with now are because of his failures in addressing them at the time - immigration, Iran, affirmative action (thanks, S.D. O'Connor!), etc., he was the absolute best that we could have had at the time. It was truly a different DC back then, and Ronaldus Magnus was sui generis for his time. Trump could not really be the POTUS he is today without him (and us) noticing where Reagan fell short. He's indeed standing on the shoulders of a giant.

134 Good in the medium run, yes. But the short run it's still a decrease in disposable income in the market, until the economy adjusts.

He wouldn't have won if he didn't take Bush.
They would have seen to it.
They told him.

137 The "Peace Dividend" was one of the significant causes of the 92 recession. When forts closed, some towns lost their "town factory".

140 First comment in prob a decade...
The jobs numbers have been awful. No amount of "shifting thru the data" is going to solve that. I have never known so many people out of work and they've been out of work for a long time.
Trump's management of the economy has been a masterclass in mismanagement.
Govt ownership of companies? Raising taxes (sorry, tariffs) on businesses and consumers?
Are we really surprised job growth is stagnant (at best).

142 Your piece should be posted everywhere possible. Especially places like Bloomberg and the WSJ, who know what's going on but pretend the sky is falling. If only.
Nice work, Buck.

143 All this is happening with a lower population due to deportations.

It isn't possible that the government was hiring illegal immigrants, is it?
