Ric-Rac Is Back and Looking Extra Cute

Welcome to our fun fashion update, where we celebrate the little details that make an outfit feel alive. This week’s star is pure whimsy: ric-rac and it is so, so cute.

That classic braid trim, the one that looks like a happy little wave, has been zigzagging its way back onto dresses, tops, skirts, and even accessories. Once a staple of mid-century home sewing and adorable 1950s–60s dresses, ric-rac is now getting a modern refresh. Designers and brands are using it as playful contrast edging on hems, necklines, sleeves, and tiered skirts, turning simple silhouettes into something full of personality.

What makes it feel so fresh right now is the mix of nostalgia but in a larger, bolder statement. Ric-rac offers pure delight. A pop of contrasting color (think bright pink against navy, white on gingham, or bold tones on soft florals) adds instant movement and texture. It’s the fashion equivalent of a wink. 50 Worked on it all day, Movie Vault is now fully at MVP for both web browsing and Roku app playback.

I also have the media acqusition pipeline sorted out, the only manual step is running the naming tokenizer and formatter that strips extraneous text in file and folders and conforms it for what the schema requires.

I'm seriously contemplating monetizing this.

Just have to figure out how to make it multi-platform as it relies heavily on python scripting and macOS centric workflow.

Problably refactor it as an electron app.

58 The main issue would be the Roku app, right now you have to enable developer mode on your Roku TV or set-top box and side load the app, that's not going to be something most people are going to want to do. So I would have to register as a Roku App developer and go through that hurdle.

I still have one dress that my mother made when I was about 3, which would have been circa 1960. I keep it in an acid free box and all these decades later, it looks brand new. It has black ric rac and a reminder that my mother could sew like nobody’s business. She did like her ric rac though.

73 Prayers if you please for the husband of an old gym friend of mine. The husband suffered a severe stroke immediately after finishing a 100 mile bike ride for some charity. He's in his early 50's and is (was) in great shape. He rides like this all the time. Apparently, he is in very bad shape.

77 I know exactly where I was 31 years ago today. I was on a Jeep driving along the beach with my besties on Nantucket with WMVY on the radio, the Martha's Vineyard station which was great back then, and they announced that Jerry Garcia had died.

Might mean nothing to anyone else but it was devastating to us. Then they said they were going to play nothing but his music for the next 48 hours. So we had a huge party to celebrate his life and music.

Thanks Jerry for all the tunes. RIP.

96 So....ended up in the ER this afternoon while (still) on vacation....

Grandson #1 wanted to go on a boat cruise out of SF harbor. We were on it, just as it was pulling out of the docking area, my feet decided not to work correctly, and I ended up landing HARD on my noggin. Hurt like an SOB!

EMTs suggested I go to the ER near daughter's house - I didn't have any signs of neurological impairment, but given my age and the fact that I am on blood thinners, we just wanted to be sure.

Turns out I am fine, and I am now back at daughter's house.

I think we will be staying here tomorrow before we leave on Tuesday morning.

On the plus side, I got to see the Muir Woods area and the sea lions in SF harbor. Still haven't seen the Golden Gate Bridge (it was too foggy), and I still want to ride a cable car, so another trip will be in order very soon 😊💕

I got fed up with Plex and their ever changing UI and TOS, so I've built my own Plex replacement that, in my estimation, blows Plex away in features, function and search capabilities, I also built a Roku front end so it's an end to end replacement for Plex.

The other piece of integration I did was media acquisition via torrents.

It's all currently a very bespoke setup, so if someone wanted to set it up in their environemnt they would have to know how set up a python virtual environment, load ibraries, set everything up as a service so it starts up automatically.

It's shall we say, involved.

That one is common enough to be worth buying a quality tap, IMO.

For unusual threads that I'm not likely to need again, I sometimes risk a ChiCom special, although there I always try to test it in a scrap piece first because snapping one off in the actual workpiece always sucks. In my experience, if it survives the first hole it's probably gonna last for a while.

Not at all, most people would have no idea how to set up a python virtual environment, nor how to flip their roku into developer mode so they can side load an app. nor the other myriad things necessary to get a system like this up and running, which is why monetizing something like this would be difficult as I would have to turn it into a universal package that can be installed on different OS's.

It is a pretty sweet system if I do say so myself.

Can confirm. Used one in the oilfield for years. 3 watts to the final in the transmitter. And I could mount a high-gain Yagi antenna on the roof of the shack, too. In really remote areas, they would hire a comms service to install a cell repeater on the top of the derrick.

Ordinarily aircraft are extensively tested by the manufacturer before the design is finalized. The government wanted a long range heavy bomber so very badly it ordered 250 of them before even a prototype had been built. Jeeze Louise. I guess the fear at the time, if Britain were to get invaded, then bombing raids would have to be launched from Newfoundland. That’s a pretty long haul.

So all the normal typical teething problems with any new aircraft were hashed out by the army aircrews. In combat sometimes. They would churn out brand new aircraft in say, Wichita, and park them by the hundreds. Then maintenance teams would take install upgrade “kits” on them outside, often in horrendous weather. Just a complete load of bullshit, I guarantee it. The engines had a disconcerting habit of catching on fire, often.

The coolest part was they had almost completely lost their wings. The had little arms like a T-rex.

What is called the Cheyenne turret on B-17Gs emerged from, you guessed it, the Cheyenne, WY modification center. Officially this turret modification that increased the area of coverage of the twin .50cals was called the pumpkin turret.

The Curtiss SB2C also had a modification process though it was mainly because there were so many that to stop production to incorporate them would have delayed that problem plagued bomber even more.

The concept predates even the start of World War II in the USAAC/USAAF with Hawai'ian Air Depot modified B-17s being ID'd by their unique paint scheme.

The US in Australia had an extensive modification setup. It is where A-20s and B-25s were modified to become low level strafers for example. Or 18 B-25H-1 Mitchells were modified for the night intruder mission and issued to the 418th NFS.

On a more positive note, when they built the 36,000 acre Joliet, illinois arsenal during WWII, they built it around several existing cemeteries. When they decommissioned the arsenal, they used part of the land for the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery where my folks are interred along with 75,000 members of military families

231 Tibbetts was an interesting guy. His copilot, Paul Lewis was a bit crazy. I think he was the guy who “borrowed” a bomber, maybe from Wendover, UT along with a crew chief, so they could fly home for Christmas in Ohio or whatever. They ran into weather and went inadvertent IMC, and nearly crashed. Things were a little more lax in the Army Air Force back then. Tibetts just said he’s a good pilot, and that was that.

Base security, the CID guys found about a half dozen machinists, good ones, that were actually convicted felons who were on the run, who had escaped from jail, things like that. I guess in those days, they didn’t look too closely at people who enlisted, until later on. The Army was a good plafe to hide. Tibetts called them into his office and started reading their files outloud. Uh-oh. How the hell did they get all this info?? He said, basically keep your mouth shut, and we’ll destroy your files and arrest warrants. Apparently welders and machinists were very much in demand at the time.

252 215 I learned something new that blew my mind. About 1000 years ago the was a flightless bird in Madacascar called the elephant bird. I could be 2x as tall as a human and could weight like 500 lbs.

The coolest part was they had almost completely lost their wings. The had little arms like a T-rex.

All extint now, there was a smaller one in New Zealand. Both were absolute terrors to the natives.

Heh! Today, the Little Engine Stand That Couldn't became the Little Engine Stand That Can. I cut off the useless third caster wheel, and welded on a bar bearing two caster wheels, leftover from when I re-wheeled my rolling ladder. Did the welding with the wheels bearing weight on a flat cement floor so they are all in the same plane. Got the VW engine back on it, and it will not tip over, and rolls like a baby buggy.

Correct. The R-3350 was a brand new engine in a brand new plane. It too had teething problems.

And in China and the Marianas it turned into a real mess. With many aborts and crashes. By the time the B-29s moved to the Marianas and the first commander sacked, it had been proven that very high-altitude bombing was a bust. The horrendous CEP and the jet stream thwarted accuracy.

In fact it was the 509th that found a partial solution to high altitude bombing accuracy. Unconsciously the bombardiers would shift their head while looking through the Norden just before release and that was enough to badly affect accuracy. There was no easy fix to the jet stream.

In the meantime, LeMay went with low level nighttime firebombing because Japanese air defense at night was almost nil, far too many buildings were wooden, and it lessened the strain on the B-29 engines because they didn't have to struggle to high altitude or carry as heavy a bombload.

They added jet engines to later variants and even retrofitted them to the previous. Total of 10 engines, 6 piston, and 4 jets, "six turnin' and four burnin'".

Due to some of the engine problems, crews changed that to "two turning, two burning, two smoking, two choking, and two more unaccounted for."

I hate that. Some of the vintage harleys use weird threads, and all of them use some regular, but not common things you would have laying around. We have a drawer for all that weird shit, and I ever time I go in it I pray. Last week I needed a die to clean up threads on an engine sprocket shaft. It was 7/8-14. Thank god we had it, but I was sweating that one. Another time I needed 1"-24, got lucky again. But... one time I needed a 1 1/2-24 left hand thread die for the drive gear on an earlier 4 speed trans. I got foiled.

311 I got three more panels of roofing tin applied to the inside wall of my shop. Five twelve-foot "bays" (between the posts) of 14 are now done. So a tetch over 1/3 of it. To hang any more, I would have to move a lot of stuff. So a good place to leave off for a spell. I was able to hoist the panels right to the ceiling, position them laterally by moving the rolling ladder by increments, and press them flat against the wall, all from the floor. Then all I had to do was climb the ladder, and drive screws with the screw gun and a long extension. I bought self-starting drywall screws, and they work slick, too. I am pleased with the progress.
