Depends on what that's relative to. Here at 35N, I'm moving at about 850 mph relative to the center of the earth.

The earth's center is moving about 66,000 mph relative to the sun. The Sun is moving about 500,000 mph relative the center of the galaxy.

The Galaxy itself has a certain "peculiar velocity" relative to the "Hubble flow", due to the expansion of space. It's being pulled toward a Heap Big concentration of mass known as the Great Attractor, which is about 10 quadrillion solar masses.

All in all, you're moving about 1.5 million mph relative to the Hubble flow, the "standard of rest" such as can be defined in an expanding spacetime. And that doesn't even mean what you think it means. :-)

It's going to be a great joy buying DDR5 in a few years for $50 per 16GB stick, though.

THAT I'm looking forward to, assuming that the parts reseller channels survive this nonsense.

Then they'll bring out DDR6 and the price will double, again.

Yeah, but we'll have bought up a ton of memory and older motherboards that support DDR5 and will be able to build hobby machines again (I hope.)

I wish us luck, we're gonna need it.

Yeah, if they're trying to force us all to use essentially cheap terminals that connect to the actual computing power in their data centers/cloud and rent our computing time, you might be right. I think this plan is doomed to fail because it goes against human nature - people want to own things.

I lived through centralized computing power once already (Mainframes and terminals) and the advent of brand new home computers was such an exciting time (expensive too, at first.) The powers that be may want to try to put that genie back in the bottle. Good luck to them, they'll need it.

Reality is mutable, but they can't shut it up forever. Also, the pendulum swings. It always does.

And people are ANGRY about how many things we used to own they've tried to take away and rent back to us. That's going to go rodeo at some point.

I build 10 year builds for myself, because I hate setting up PCs, and I am about 5 years into my current one (128GB RAM) with a recent Intel B580 video card refresh.

That's how I do it too, except I missed this cycle's rebuild because Covid screwed everything up for our family regarding income, so I'm still carrying on with what I built in 2012 and I'm playing the waiting game until the prices become sane again.

Looks like you prize reliability in your 10 year builds as well - hard to achieve based on research done before purchase time, but it is possible (needs a little luck too so you don't discover you bought a lemon-part.)

My question wasn't very thorough. This plant thrives in the Southwest. Great. They did their research in Yuma,AZ. Arizona has lots of land, but does this plant grow elsewhere? The Colorado River is already strained past capacity.

Plants are sometimes picky about where they will grow. Clearing out a tree farm in Mississippi will provide space, but will the soil be right? Will it grow in wetter conditions?

I see electronic items being leased/rented on a scheduled basis, similar to phone upgrade plans. Planned obsolescence, too expensive to purchase and repair and no market of spare parts are working towards everything being a rental. The rental company will need the surveillance information to defend the integrity of their property in your home.
It is well a thought out path to owning nothing and being happy about it.

I looked up Hesperaloe, and realized “oh that’s just Red Yucca!” I’ve had that as an ornamental. Some one suggested growing it elsewhere - generally, desert plants need to be grown in dry soil. Their root systems are adapted to that, and they’ll rot out if placed in soil that’s constantly moist.

Also, from what I’ve seen of Red Yucca, I’d be concerned that the product would be more like sandpaper.

On the upside, it spurred me to finally convert to using a NAS, which was my last gamechanger frontier in computing ca. 2009, before the Linux conversion.

I sorted out audio track and closed caption selection.

This was something I discovered as a gap when I tried to play Police Story and learned I didn’t understand Cantonese.

The only workflow that I need to figure out is how to pull down the movie file once it’s added to the library.

The app uses The Movie Database api to pull down movie metadata, but does not add a movie file, obviously.

So the workflow is going to implement a torrent search and backend transmission pipeline.

The other hurdle I surmounted was how the app looked on iPhone or android.

The one major item is making the Roku app look like the web app.

Roku uses Brightscript which is xml markup and a Visual Basic adjacent programming language.

I’ve cobbled together a rudimentary front end that loads and does the job, but could look better

We've got very similar experiences on hardware it seems. My "Lemon part" was a power supply as well: Corsair's AX-860i. This was supposed to be a premium power supply (I sure paid a premium price at the time!) Well, turns out it wasn't premium, anything but.

First problem: They provided a usb interface so you could feed data on temperature back to your motherboard so that their Windows based software could report that to you. "Okay, let's try that." Seemed to work nicely... Except that the next time I plugged in a USB stick and tried to eject it, I was constantly told the device was busy. (huh?) I had to go searching for quite a while but I found a forum where others were complaining of this exact problem, and it turns out the idjits at Corsair wrote their software to poll the USB bus a few times a second, and every poll re-connected every device, so you couldn't ask it to eject safely and pull it out in time. THAT software got uninstalled, and that usb internal cable got removed.

Second problem: About a year into its life, the power supply started crowbarring (shutting off suddenly/going into "protection".) At first it was once every few days so I couldn't figure out what was going on, but then it started doing it two or three times a day and then I clued in: "Oh great, probably a dying power supply."

Checked my purchase date and my warranty on this thing (WELL within warranty) and started looking into what it would take to ship this back and get it looked at. Well, apparently they don't really want to honour warranties because the shipping fees alone to their European location (only option) exceeded the cost to simply replace the stupid thing with another power supply. I downgraded to a 650 Watt Bronze rated power supply and never had another moment's trouble.

I still have that Corsair AX-860i in its original fancy little black velvet bag *spits* boxed up in it's original box, and it lives on my "shelf of shame" for hardware that has egregiously failed me. (That shelf reminds me to NEVER buy things from that supplier again.)

Oh, and found on various forums that this was a common problem with that model.

Given that I'm now stuck in "Wait 'em out" mode, I'm really glad I built as big as I did last time, because I CAN wait them out even though I'm well beyond the 10 year mark.

And I abandoned buying "bleeding edge" stuff decades ago. Those come with a "Recover our R&D" bleeding-edge price too. Nope. One or two (maybe even three) generations back, so long as it performs well enough (and by then, stuff's usually well proven too.)

I had endless BSODs - nonspecific and undiagnosable via Windows, of course - causing endless MEMTEST86 runs, cursing of Vista, loss of data and productivity due to TSR time spent, replacement of memory and video card as shotgun TSR expenses, and finally buying another premium 1000W PSU to as the last shotgun TSR expense.

Near as I can tell, one of the rails was dropping out periodically causing memory errors.

That PSU is in my box of shoot with shotgun then burn in a fire electronics. The replacement PSU lives on in that 2008 rig as a backup NAS using OMV. This was in a time when 8GB of ram was the bees knees.

That reminds me of when I had a plane parked out at the Manhattan airport in the early '90s.

Occasionally while I was washing it, or just generally goofing around out there, you could see M1 Abrams tanks rolling along the ridgeline to the west. Sometimes, Warthogs would practice tankbusting on them and once in a while, a C-141 Starlifter would boot a bunch of paratroopers out the back.

All to the sylvan sounds of automatic weapons fire.

Off hours, the 1 AM boom of the howitzers rattling the windows would get the cats a bit upset.

I will more than likely roll it out as an Electron App.

The main problem is there is a lot of Python backend scripting going on, for watchfolders and webserving, etc.

Also the system is hosted on an M1 mac so there is some Mac/linux specific stuff going on that I would have to make universal for it to deploy to a WinOS architecture.
