We live right there in NE Okla, where the Ozarks butt up against the South Great Plains. Drive east and you get into the forests and rolling hills and lakes and streams. Drive west, actually from here you go just over the river and up the hill and you're in the prairie, then it's a long mostly-flat drive until you hit the Rockies. Kind of neat, really, to be right at that transition.

Is that TMI for OPSEC? Oh, well.

35 Okay, this is different. You know how the old school folks before matches were invented had to get a fire going with flint & steel? You’d shower some prepared char cloth with sparks, the char cloth basically burnt carbonized cotton or linen, which would hopefully catch the spark, and glow into a glowing coal, and build from there.

I thought this would have to be bone dry to work, right? Just makes sense to me. But a feller on YouTube made a demonstration. He claimed that carbon molecules can’t absorb water. I mean, OK if you say so. But he was able to soak this char cloth in water, and still get a coal going with flint & steel.

So keep this in the back of your mind the next time you’re out in the rain without any lighter or matches!

I read of a handful or a gang of old Karens (6), and man are they ugly, protesting deportations at the airport. Apparently they figured out certain days that the illegals are brought to a hanger and shipped out this summer by ICE.

They have signs! One old bag looked very tired as well as ugly and I want to deport her as well. She probably wants to adopt one to hang out with her feral cats.

I wondered about that. Our dogs, even the smart one who taught herself to pee/poop outside at 9wks by hitting the front door with her paw, would not know what a knife was.

She also smiled on command which would scare people.

German Shepherd/Malamute/Husky and looked like an Akita. Saved me once from an intruder and bit his butt as I opened the door and told her to "get him." She lunged at him. Surprise! He was right at the door with his hand on the handle.

She was not trained for this but knew something was up, sensed it with me, and would have tried to kill him. We named her Gilda from SNL.

He might not have seen me reading the paper and was simply a burgler. I heard bushes rustle, reading the paper one morning, and then saw him walk through two gates of the picket fence to the back porch.

I quickly dressed and she was right there with me the entire time. He jumped a fence and she brought back his jean's pocket to me.

I didn't break 100F here this July, topping out for a high of 99.5F. But hell, dew point hit 82F, and on the day at some point the heat index on that day briefly hit 121F on the console, and that was during the first week in July.

July was great here other than the first few days. Very high 70's to barley over 80. Dry enough where I needed a light sweatshirt on the bike, especially around the 6pm area. At night it would be really low 60's. That is not our normal July by a long shot. There was also no rain other than around the 4th at the end of the heat wave. I said we'll probably pay for it in August. So far it seems that august will break it off in our ass.

It's been on the dry side this year as well. I had a pretty wet May, June was a little above normal, and July a little below. So far, I'm about 1" or so below normal this year to date. GSP itself is still way behind, maybe 5" so far. The whole damned state was in severe drought conditions or worse until about May. Not as bad now, but pretty much everybody is still behind normal for the year.

As my late cousin would point out, our rainfall distribution here in the upstate, GSP's forecast area, is pretty much bimodal. We have streaks of wet years and dry years, and it's usually some event that flips it from regime to the other. He said there's a pattern there, but it's really complex and I don't think they every really got it figured out completely.

Anyway, "normal rainfall" here could be seen as either a wet dry year, or a dry wet year. :-)

Another local area weather mystery my cousin and the GSP guys would note is a little "hail alley" just over to the east about 10 miles or so into Spartanburg county, running roughly N-S.

That's an area that got a lot more hail, by a long shot, than any random spot in their forecast areas. Seemed to be hail attractor of sorts. They had theories about it, but never really anything definite about why.

Probably topography. Change in elevation causes changes in lapse rate, triggers hail formation when conditions are otherwise right. I am probably not stating the correctly. Peon Manor is in a "hail/tornado alley", too, but so far this summer, it has escaped without any hail at all. One little flurry, a few dozen slushy hailstones that would bounce off Tinkerbell's gauzy wings.

We drove into Anchorage today to run errands, saw the Blue Angels practicing. Had to pull over to watch, because, cool.

I think they come over our house for some of their maneuvers but we shall see tomorrow. I'm not putting up with Anchorage crowds to see Arctic Thunder, but it was fun when I was younger, certainly. Also, when I had easy base access. Being retired, I'd have to take the bus... no thanks.

260 I converted to suspenders a couple of years ago? At least 15 months - solved the problem of keeping the pants up and also solved the problem of 'don't have to take it off to go through airport security'. I'd been using ratchet-style belts before that to handle the weight changes and odd belt lengths. I still keep the belts around for rare occasions but basically it's suspenders every day.

We lived on Government Hill for a time, and that was a good place to watch most of it from, particularly the elementary school playground. Bring a lawn chair. The end of the runway goes right overhead. Plus, it doesn't cost a dime.

I have to dig a hole next to my septic tank, expose the wall of the tank, which is fiberglass, and patch a leak. I will get somebody to spot for me if I enter the excavation. Only about 5 feet deep, I figure.

We never missed a SNL with the original cast, and yes I am old. Fifty yrs next month since I met the dude. We both worked 3-11 on weekends, with W/TH off to organize our schedule around his classes. Did this for two years and worked Christmas to let the married staff stay home with kids (time and a half).

I'd give the 11-7 RN report and we'd blast out of that parking lot to make it home for midnight. Awesome cast and, often, great live music. Fun times! I was a cheap date as he had no money. Plus I am all about having a good time vs being wined and dined...did that a couple of times with doctors and, well, not my idea of a party.

On one date with a surgical resident he wined and dined me and took me back to his condo. I was being polite. However, I knew where it might be headed and became fixated on a giant planter of a baby tears plant under a skylight and he gave up and took me home. I have my ways as well as being weird. That took care of that!

They are. I switched a while back and I'll never go back. They're also very convenient if you're doing a lot of doctor appointments that require depantsing yourself (which I unfortunately have been in the last year or so). Suspenders are a lot faster than fooling around with a belt.

Well, with the digger, it will be easy to over-dig, and scale the slope back. Below the foot or so of topsoil, Alberta dirt is clayey glacial till, and stands like concrete unless it gets wet.

Predicted Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability on the surface of the sun has now been directly observed. The NSO, National Solar Observatory, using the Daniel K. In-No-Way (alas at the name) telescope have now observed. This thing can see the surface of the Sun at finer detail than ever before.

There's still a lot of how the big ol' ball of fire in the sky behaves that is not well understood. Just how it does all the flares and CME farts are one, as well as how the corona gets so much hotter than the surface layer. This mechanism they observed has a lot to do with these processes.

You can see the problem.

So, I was looking at my downloaded music videos, and noticed that they had made an HD version of "Crush" (not to be confused with 'crash'), but I couldn't remember it. So I watch it again, and it's really nice, but wait what just happened. Where was the ending? It just kind of... cut off.

So I thought, maybe the album segues straight from one song into the next. That would be a very "jazz pop" thing to do. But I checked... and you see it. They cut the song from Before These Crowded Streets (199 nearly in half for the video! (Or maybe a radio edit, idk.)

So I gave it a listen, and the longer original is even *better* -- as you would expect. Just going to download that, and delete the video, since the abrupt cutoff would annoy me every time.

I nominate Counting Crows. I think if no one had ever heard "Mr. Jones" except from playing the album it was on, people in general would've liked them more. 311 Hubby is on 3rd room mate since entering nursing home. First one was very old-- 97? and slept a lot, sometimes all day (every-other day or so) until one day he just didn't wake at all. He was a character when he was awake! He & hubby would argue sometimes, but not seriously.

2nd roomie was on O2 constantly, so didn't speak much. Very quiet guy, probably on hospice... only lasted a month.

Current roomie is nice, personable but not too talky. Has a permanent catheter and takes all meals in-room. They agree on TV shows, so that's nice...

315 Sleeping a lot can be a good sign sometimes, as a side effect of healing. Obviously not if it's just all the time chronically. But a sudden bout of vigor can actually be a bad sign, as if the body has given up on healing and is just spending its fuel. (Pet owners experience this the most.)

Going off on a tangent, a lookalike can be seen psychologically with depressives, suddenly getting decisive about taking care of business at the point they've given up. Since the mental and physical separately show the same pattern, I think there's a more general principle involved.

316 Today was weird. I helped hubby back into bed after lunch, and tried to tune in a program, but remote did nothing, and tv was on Roku screen-saver. No problem really.

Roomie was asleep, hubby just watched the screen-saver as if it were a tv show...didn't seem to care as long as the picture kept moving.

It's sad in a way, but also a relief that I didn't need to "fix it" on a Friday afternoon after maintenance crew had clocked out for the weekend! Tomorrow is another day.
