Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Stop Me If You Heard This One Before, Redux: "Deal" to Open the Strait of Hormuz "Imminent"?Supposedly. Scott Bessent and Marco Rubio say a deal is imminent-adjacent. Hot Air quotes Reuters. This doesn't sound like a bona fide deal to me. This sounds like more duplicitous Iranian bullshit, still insisting they get to control the Strait and charges "tariffs" on oil ships, which they then use to buy missiles to shoot at Americans: Although Bessent insisted a future deal would include "freedom of movement," a Reuters report published on Tuesday morning said Iran was expecting to maintain control of inbound traffic in the Strait of Hormuz in a deal being negotiated with Oman, citing an Iranian source. Outbound traffic would take a route between the two countries, and Iran would maintain oversight on those traffic lanes as well. Despite Iran's past insistence they were not directly negotiating with the U.S., Trump said on Monday the talks were "going on right now." The president said he called off strikes over the weekend, which he claimed would have been "harder than any attack... since World War II." Trump said the talks were "backed" by other countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. "I want to give them every last chance before decapitation," he said later. Meanwhile, Fox News reports that someone high up in the government, or even in the White House, leaked top-secret plans for the massive aerial bombardment of Iran over the weekend. They don't say this leak caused the attack to be scuttled. Trump says that our "Gulf allies" requested the attack be delayed. Still -- what the hell is this? Gunther Eagleman

A major military operation was in the works.
Trump called it the largest since World War II. Then it got leaked over the weekend. Trey Yingst reports even senior Israeli intelligence officials had no idea the plan existed. That's how tightly it was held... until someone high inside the U.S. government decided to run their mouth to the press. I think it was a deliberate leak to let the Iranians know we were about to attack, so they (the Iranians) decided to play ball for now. When I see things like this being seriously discussed as part of a deal, it calls into question whether anyone reporting on this has any fucking clue what they are talking about. Iran has never "controlled" any traffic in the Strait, never will control any traffic, and couldn't do so even if it really really really wanted to. Iran "opening" and "closing" the Strait is made-up propaganda bullshit. Nobody ever heard of it before the war. It was invented solely to make the USA -- and Trump -- look bad. I think that Trump is just mirroring the Iranians' tactics back at them. They have done this thing before of announcing an agreement where we surrendered to all their demands. I don't understand how that's even supposed to work as a negotiating tactic, since you're obviously not going to fool someone into thinking he said something he never said. I guess you then accuse him of reneging on your 'agreement' when he denies it, and hope that he wants it badly enough to make concessions to get you back to the table?
There's no way to deal in a rational and reasoned way with such nonsense. But a sufficiently shameless negotiator can just go tit for tat right back at them, and maybe someday they'll tire of it and get serious. Or maybe they'll die in an explosion first. We'll see! Maybe these insanely wealthy countries figure out their own way to fight Iran instead of Americans doing it for them? - Our conflict with Iran isn't about the Strait. We can't judge the war until it plays out beyond these steps (if it ever does). The fact that Trump did this in an election year suggests one or more of the following:
A. Thought he could have it won and over and done with fast B. Believed regardless of consequence it was too important to leave alone or to the "next" people C. Had a catastrophic mental break of some kind D. Is rather suddenly someone else's puppet E. Fell for shitty intelligence from actors with bad intents F. So how many Muslims in the US are willing to die, and how many Muslims are the Iranians willing to kill for this hypothetical nuclear bomb threat? I question this whole line of reasoning that starts with "Death to America" and always ends at "...by nuclear annihilation". Why? because the millions of Muslims in the West have told us time and time again that "Death to America" means Islamic take-over and death of the cultural West and anyone who doesn't bow the knee. Its the cohort that is wanting to bomb Iran to the days of primordial soup who keep telling us to not believe our lying eyes and expect a nuclear holocaust if we don't act now! I still think the test for Tuq'r was the "Jewish rape dogs" story. The intelligence services came up with the stupidest story possible, fed it to him, and he passed it along.
I still see lefties echoing this on their sites while claiming that obviously there were no sexual assaults on Oct 7 because that's just crazy talk and there is no evidence besides lying Jewish b*tches. Posted by: 18-1 at August 04, 2026 01:11 PM (sKqQm) 195

"people who ostensibly support Trump"
I voted for him thrice. There's my support. Honestly, if he had said before the 2024 election that he definitely intended to go kinetic against Iran during his term, I might have sat it out. I've been gentle in my criticism of the guy, because I don't come here to start fights. That said, this war seems nowhere close to achieving its primary objective of denuclearizing the regime. That will require the wholesale slaughter of civilians and the destruction of their holy cultural sites.
America simply has no stomach to engage in war at that level, despite our unparalleled technological superiority over every other fighting force on the planet. We will never engage our enemies at the level necessary to utterly destroy them. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at August 04, 2026 01:09 PM (FZ29D) This why you brand all Iranian muslims as "enemy combatants" or "enemy workers". And all mosques* as "IRGC installations". It’s astonishing that anyone posting thinks they know anything about what is really going on. If you really know what is going on, and are posting here, you’re breaking both security and the law. Even then what one “knows” even with certain levels of clearance is only what you need to know, and even then only what our side “thinks” is the case. Tolstoy was right, God alone knows what’s really going on in war. We humans are just making our best guesses based on poor and incomplete information.
