The Morning Rant 8/4/2026 [Doof]

CBD looked deep down on the bench for a fill-in for this morning's rant and found me. OK then - I'll give it a go!

I've been noticing a growing number of articles and X posts lately about the increasing amount of "safety" cameras (officially known as "license plate readers" or LPRs) being deployed around the country. CBD brought up this topic in his Morning Rant on 7/9/26 (remember - don't comment on old threads). This is another huge part of the surveillance state in which we currently live.

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Does the current surveillance state constitute "unreasonable searches and seizures"? Sure seems like it to me.

A Forbes article from the pre-Covid era compared the modern surveillance state to George Orwell's book 1984. The article made distinctions between government being the primary source in the book and private industry being the primary source in 2019. In the relatively short time since that article was written, those lines have gotten blurrier.

This is from May 2019 so add 7 years and change to that 70.

In 1984, it was the state that determined what constituted acceptable speech in keeping society orderly.
In 2019, it is a small cadre of private companies in Silicon Valley and their executives that wield absolute power over what we are permitted to see and say online.

The atmosphere of free speech on social media got worse during Covid but has gotten noticeably better since Elon bought Twitter and the other giants dialed back on their ridiculous censorship. Going in the opposite direction - The State of Minnesota has recently decided to assert a claim to absolute authority over permissible speech with the Shiloh Hendrix case.

In 1984, it was the state that made use of its vast surveillance empire to maintain order.
In 2019, a landscape of private companies so large it is almost uncountable, monitors, monetizes and manipulates us.

Citizens purchase the latest digital devices, upgrade and maintain them at regular intervals, pay for the power and internet services needed to connect them and grant unlimited rights to their most intimate information to private companies.

Enter "Flock Safety" here in 2026. The distinctions made by Forbes in 2019 are rapidly disintegrating. Was it all government owned and operated property in Orwell's book? I don't know. But in 2026, "Flock operates on a subscription/lease model only. Hardware is owned and maintained by Flock and remains their property." (Source - getsafeandsound.com)

Grok provided this note:

Customers (including government agencies) own and control the data/footage captured by the cameras. Flock does not sell that data, and sharing is controlled by the customer. The distinction is important: the physical cameras belong to the private contractor (Flock), while the data belongs to the contracting agency or organization.

So the customers (mostly government agencies at various levels) own the footage / data. Which is provided by Flock Safety. The unmentioned part is if/how Flock Safety themselves also review and/or retain the data. The public - who are the indirect billpayers - should know that!

First, let's take a look at who owns Flock Safety. According to Grok with sources cited:

It was founded in 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia, by Georgia Tech alumni Garrett Langley (CEO and largest individual shareholder), Matt Feury, and Paige Todd. Major investors include Andreessen Horowitz (a16z, which led a $275 million round in 2025 at a ~$7.5 billion valuation), Founders Fund, Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Bedrock, Greenoaks Capital, Kleiner Perkins, Meritech Capital, Coatue, and others (dozens in total). It remains independent and founder-led, with no acquisition by a larger corporation. Note that while Founders Fund (associated with Peter Thiel) is an investor, Thiel does not own or control the company. (coloradosun.com)

Peter Theil's name recently came up in an X post from Wall Street Apes that hit my feed

Just take this location, “Here's a flock camera pointed directly at the schoolyard, monitoring where each kid walks, how they get home, if there's an adult with them, which car is picking them up”
But it even gets worse than this, I’ll provide in the video an area next to a kids water splash pad that has a huge amount of Flock cameras pointed right at it
They say it’s because the cameras are there for enhanced security at high risk locations, but the connection to Epstein has people more than concerned about these camera placements

But it's just for "safety", right?

I was able to locate this location as the Eagle Sports Range in Cudahy, Wisconsin

CBD mentioned the website deflock.org in his post. This is an outstanding site which contains a map of the US with the location of every Flock camera. As of last night, it was reporting just over 125,000 "license plate readers" in operation. Definitely check out that site.

A woman found her plate on haveibeenflocked.com. The judge was "mortified" reading through her victim impact statement.

I'll admit that this does give me some brief second thoughts about these "safety" measures. A good result from ill advised measures is a rare exception, though. Overall, I agree with the countless people who oppose this type of surveillance because it is a violation of the 4th Amendment. It is also way too likely for misuse to occur.

I am hopeful that there will be more and more pushback against these "safety" cameras which will lead to them being removed. At the same time, I wonder how many elected officials are "investors" in Flock Safety.

For those lackwits who still insist that the government's spying on candidate (and President) Trump was no big deal, this is why people don't trust the government with this (or pretty much ANY) information. There was even a procedure put in place (FISA courts) to make sure it wasn't abused, and the first thing they did was abuse it.

"Relevant" data (i.e., anything related to national security) is turned over to various government agencies.

"Irrelevant" data (i.e., everything else) is deleted at midnight, but certain SSNs are passed along to people who can intervene if there's a bad situation in progress.

Then a malevolent AI is constructed, which has far, far more sinister interests in capturing and manipulating that data.

We have zero right to privacy when we step foot outside of our house and people are going to try and cash in on that any way they can.

I don’t even want to hear one of them say to me “Yo, Cow Demon, how’s it hangin?” If you are that hot and horny to investigate me, go talk to a judge, not a “safety” camera company.

And this is so amazingly stupid that I have to revisit it.

This is like the biometrics on guns. I have no problem with people who would like to a biometric lock on their phone.

But I know (in this case, because the left has already passed laws) the second any such technology becomes available, it will be required and used to restrict our constitutional rights.

Because the government cannot be trusted with power. It needs to be VERY limited.

And the multiple stories of police misusing Flock is already an excellent argument against it before we get to directed misuse by the government.

117 Here's one of the things surveillance systems, like Flock cameras can do; after monitoring your movements for some period of time the AI can pretty much predict where you are likely to be at any given time. In the spaces they cover.

This has been tested, documented. It's why LE will pull up surveillance data from months ago, weeks ago, days ago when searching for a person of interest. And when they would like to personally talk to them, or detain them, they have a pretty good idea where to find them.

They have been found in locations near guardrails where law dictates NOTHING should be for safety reasons (for good reason). In one instance, some of those big barrels that are supposed to slow out of control vehicles that leave the road were used to conceal cameras.

127 Everyone hates surveillance. Until they want or need it. Half the subpoenas in any city -- and probably quite a few smaller towns -- are for people trying to get access to surveillance footage.

Usually, it's because there is a dispute over an accident. But sometimes, especially around late-night bars, there was a drunken brawl. Or whatever other reason there might be for video evidence of what happened.

I'm generally against the surveillance state. I don't want people recording me, tracking me, watching me pick my nose or scratch my balls. But ... when a few months ago some assholic fucknugget backed his car into mine, and then denied he did, I would have really liked video evidence to prove my case to his insurance company.

The problem isn't that the CAMERA sees you at that location, the problem is that the SYSTEM tracks your movements. It is, in effect, stalking you. And it's only a matter of time before the courts decide that the prohibition against ex post facto criminal law doesn't apply to their political enemies.

141 27 Everyone hates surveillance. Until they want or need it. Half the subpoenas in any city -- and probably quite a few smaller towns -- are for people trying to get access to surveillance footage.

Usually, it's because there is a dispute over an accident. But sometimes, especially around late-night bars, there was a drunken brawl. Or whatever other reason there might be for video evidence of what happened.

I'm generally against the surveillance state. I don't want people recording me, tracking me, watching me pick my nose or scratch my balls. But ... when a few months ago some assholic fucknugget backed his car into mine, and then denied he did, I would have really liked video evidence to prove my case to his insurance company.

Yesterday, DOJ successfully had the citizenship revoked on a naturalized immigrant who lied about criminal behavior before his naturalization.

Denaturalization is hard because of several SCOTUS cases that raise the burden of proof on the government, so it's still a rare thing. Trump's second administration is leading the largest denaturalization push in decades, and it's about 200 people. However, each case is another bit of caselaw that will make the next effort easier.

Getting a denaturalization through completely because the guy lied about his criminal past will lead to dozens more instances of denaturalization which will lead to hundreds which could lead to thousands.

It took 60 years to get where we are in terms of 25% of Mexico living in the United States. Every tool is going to be useful, and every tool can be ramped up.

True. But that's not really a surveillance issue. That's unfortunately a cancerous rot that runs much deeper. That's the government turning the entire law enforcement apparatus into a political army for the Democraps.

The surveillance footage of J6 was actually helpful to the protestors, because it exposed what a total made-up sham the hysterical claims of "insurrection" were. And a lot of J6ers still got railroaded. Imagine what would have happened if there was no video evidence? They would have been tried and convicted of actual treason, and sentenced to death.

The 50% clearance for homicides is driven heavily -- if not entirely -- by gang violence in inner cities like Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, etc.

These murders aren't solved because they can't be. They're not solved because nobody cares.

If you take out these "unsolved" murders, the clearance rate would be much higher.

Thing is, you no longer have anonymity. The cams are also license plate readers. And the data owners also can get access to cellphone location data. If they want to, they can stalk an individual anywhere he or she goes, 24/7. This is a crime, called "watching and besetting". Old-school surveillance cameras just saw anonymous people, and only if a crime happened were the records scrutinized.

In a way the surveillance state is being done here because the authorities are lazy. The cop’s job is to investigate crime and, if they have enough to get the judge to issue warrants and for the State to prosecute, the jury will decide. But even that task IS JUST TOO HARD.

For all the surveillance my store has, five finger discounts still happen. Do the cops do anything about it? From what I have seen, no. Maybe I am wrong and they snag one or two people. Especially during brazen daylight attempts by people who try to run off with hundreds on groceries/alcohol. But from what I have seen the store surveillance does nothing.

Your house has five detectable zones:
Two 120V circuits, a 240V only, and 240 + those two 120V circuits.

For example, your electric dryer runs 240V to run the heating element, but the motor spinning the drum is tied to one of the two 120V circuits.

What does this all mean? A smart meter is able to detect appliance usage, and most appliances have a discernible fingerprint. A/C cycling, clothes washing, shower time (for electric WH) oven, stove and microwave use, refrigerator cycling.

Over a billing period its possible to map out a household's pattern of life, and know when the house is vacant or when occupied and roughly what schedules and usages are.
