Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before
Update: Trump Blasts "Duplicitous" Iran Leadership

Trump was ready, he says, to unleash a bombing campaign on Iran that would be the most destructive since World War II, but Iran and some Gulf States told him that Iran had accepted the basic framework of a "deal" and so Trump cancelled the attack.

trumpgroundhogsdaywar.jpg

And Iran says "We never agreed to any framework."

It's like the sun coming up and going down every day.

President Donald Trump has called off a major strike against Iran, claiming to have reached a framework for a deal with the regime.

"The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II. Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to," President Trump announced in a Saturday evening post on Truth Social.

The tentative deal includes "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT," the president continued.

The pause in the military operation was "subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL," he warned.

It's the Groundhog's Day War:

Tehran talks tough, denies agreement reached

Tehran rejected President Trump's latest peace overture, renewing its threats against the U.S.

"Iran has reached no agreement regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the semi-official Fars news agency reports, quoting a member of Tehran's negotiating team," Sky News (UK) reported.

Update: Trump blasts "duplicitous" Iranian leadership.

An irate President Donald Trump on Monday fumed over "duplicitous" Iranian leadership, after he called off planned strikes on Iran to resume peace talks, only for Iran to deny plans to meet.

"Iranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous! They ask for a meeting, some would say 'beg,' talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they're not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they're only dealing with 'Oman,'" he posted on Truth Social.

"They then go on to give their usual blather in saying, the Strait of Hormuz will be operated powerfully by them, when it is already completely controlled by the United States Navy and our 'Blockade' or, as some say, 'The United States Wall of Steel!" he wen ton. "Nothing gets through to Iran, unless we want it to, and nothing will get through, unless a Deal, or Total Surrender, is accomplished."

Trump's remarks follow Iran denying plans to meet with American negotiators on Monday. The president had anticipated a formal resumption of peace talks.

I heard someone say "Iran has never won a war, but never lost a negotiation."

Trump needs to hear that.

13 And oil prices are down 5% because no one actually cares, all while Iran continues to just die as a country because of the blockade.

And, I remember when Trump was never going to bomb them. Then he bombed them for 6 weeks. Then Trump was so eager for a deal that he'd sign anything, and the MOU came along and Iran got nothing from it. And then most of what Iran had purchased to get imported never made it to port when the MOU got torn up and Iran got paid nothing.

And then Trump would never bomb them again, and then he bombed them for 11 days.

Every stage of this is just degrading Iran.

All they can do now is write PR about things that aren't happening in the strait while everyone ignores them.

42 I gotta give Trump some credit, with the MOu it took over two weeks to accept that he was being played; with the 2nd cease fire, it only took about 4 days; now the loop looks down to about 48 hours.

Trump statement today:
“Trump: “Iranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous! They ask for a meeting, some would say “beg,” talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they’re only dealing with “Oman.” They then go on to give their usual blather in saying, the Strait of Hormuz will be operated powerfully by them, when it is already completely controlled by the United States Navy and our “Blockade” or, as some say, “The United States Wall of Steel!” Nothing gets through to Iran, unless we want it to, and nothing will get through, unless a Deal, or Total Surrender, is accomplished. Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking of a solution to a problem that they have caused, for decades. It is very simple, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”

74 The IRGC will have to be eliminated for any lasting peace that achieves Trump's objectives.

-use millions of drones with superior US AWACS and AI to roll over Iran targeting every single IRGC point of resistance

-do this while we still have dominant air superiority and EW superiority before Russia and China push more weapons into Iran

-they have 30-40 deep bunker repositories of drones and missiles around the country, the Pentagon was counting these as eliminated if the entrances were bombed, each of these need to be rolled over and controlled with drones and a ground force (partisans plus special forces) to actually destroy the stocks of drones and missiles

-successfully defeating the IRGC in a couple of provinces and empowering locals will encourage locals in the rest of the country

oh wait, we don't have millions of drones

This Iran business...is looking like amateur hour. Yes, Trump often seems clueless, or does things that seem countproductive, only to turn it around and make it a win (usually on the campaign trail), but he's going to need a miracle to make this look good, and in time to help in the midterms (instead of the mild drag it's providing now, which Iran knows they can instantly increase if they're willing to get bombed (they are)).

Also read somewhere that the population is on the verge of overthrowing IRGC. I've heard this before, but it seems they might actually mean it this time. Especially if the IRGC is weakened enough and choked out to almost collapse.

Why?

Trump and his proxies have defined 'winning' here over and over and over and over.

1. Destoy Iran's ballistic missile capability.
2. Destoy Iran's navy.
3. Destroy Iran's ability to obtain a nuke.
4. Destroy Iran's ability to fund terror proxies.

We've absolutely or de facto achieved every one of those. Now we're just grinding Iran into dust with basically no opposition.

How many caskets would you accept in exchange for rooting out the IRGC, down to the last man?

Me? None. I'd accept none caskets. Particularly when Iran's been taken off the board in any geopolitical sense.

3. Destroy Iran's ability to obtain a nuke.
4. Destroy Iran's ability to fund terror proxies

1) Trump said that we estimate we’ve destroyed 80% of their stockpiles. Since we also estimated that they had about 100,000 missiles of various types before this began, they only have about 20,000 left.

2). False goal. The Navy was just a PR thing to impress the neighbors. The ability to disrupt shipping was through drones and the fast boats, and we are still working to take those out.

3). Even the US admits we did not know about pickaxe mountain, and a significant part of their program may have been moved there.

4). Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthi are still around and still causing trouble. It’s not over with them yet.

You've hinted at two options, neither of which is appealing to Trump.
1) Go in full force, possibly including boots on the ground.
2) Run away, a la Biden.

Trump is famous for rejecting the proffered options, and generating a new one, in this case, a continuing, low level attack which costs the US relatively little in lives and military assets, while slowly and surely grinding Iran down. I suspect that is what's happening, but Trump failed to call be and fill me in this week so I can't be sure.

The thing about negotiations is, there are very few people in the world who ever do such.

And the club of "negotiated multi-million dollar deals with multiple parties--some hostile to the others" that is a NYC real estate deal is one of the smallest clubs in the world.

But I'm sure my dumb ass on the internet knows how to negotiate better with Iran ....

Trump has been talking about taking down Iran for decades, years before he got into politics directly.

He is not playing us. He's just doing things his way. Which doesn't bother me since decades of doing it the other way, invasions and then trying to rebuild and run other countries in the Middle East, has always failed. Always. There's a price to pay for that as well.

Bessent said the other day during the cabinet meeting that inflation in Iran is at 180%. Basically Zimbabwe, get out a wheelbarrow of money levels. Meanwhile, oil prices are coming down today in the US so the Strait actually isn't closed and even their threats are not doing much anymore.

I'm certainly not willing to bury thousands of them and watch Iran devolve into the street-to-street fighting I saw in Fallujah while some of the fence-sitting Iranians decide the 'invaders' are worse than the Iranian leadership just as a function of being invaders.

Trump told us at the beginning what his terms for victory were. They were defined at the onset of hostilities. We focused on and achieved all of them.

Defining military victory and then kicking the everloving shit out of the enemy with a single-minded ruthlessness until we achieve that victory is unique in post-9/11 America, and I'm here for it.

"A guy like Trump" doesn't seem to realize that negotiating with Iran is a fool's errand, regardless of the "game".

The only solution to the Iran problem is complete and utter destruction of the Islamic regime so that there are no more leaders with which to "negotiate".

There is one thing of which I am absolutely sure, and that is that "a guy like Trump" knows the Iranians will never abide by any agreement. That's why he's letting them hang themselves by continuing to "break" every agreement, while he just keeps hitting them. It's like Captain America says, "I can do this all day".

In the end, I think his goal is exactly what you say, he's just going about it in an opaque way. Given how poorly the alternate ways have fared in the past, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

The Gulf states don't want a refugee crisis (from Iran). There's also the potshots Iran is taking, but those are so few at this point they're getting intercepted. There are basically a few possible outcomes at present.

1. Iran collapses quickly due to having their power plants and bridges bombed
2. Iran collapses slowly due to the blockade
3. Iran cuts a deal

Outcome 1 and 2 is undesirable for those in the region, and perhaps Europe as well.

Who do you think we are fighting in Iraq? Iranian militias. Used to see Iranians all the time in the UAE doing business. They make up between 5 - 8% of the population in the UAE.

At the start of this war there were a lot of people here advocating for freeing the Iranian people from the mullahs and IRGC. The ones that haven't been murdered are still there. And if you think the left is bitching about the price of oil imagine the bitching they will do about a humanitarian crisis in Iran.

Trump has been saying all along he wants to leave as much of the economy intact for the benefit of the people after the war. He's not stupid, he just has a different outcome in mind and way to accomplish than others. Whether it will work remains to be seen but the idea that he's afraid of the IRGC is dumb.

Possibly. But they would still be stuck with a failed state on their border. And we all know what happens with failed states in the Middle East, we have many examples.

Trump is obviously trying a different way than has been done in the past using much more economic pain and fewer troops on the ground, like 0 other than I'm sure a handful of special forces types. There is another reason: Iran is a financial crime scene. All the info on funding ISIS, Hezb', the money laundering from Afghanistan, Iraq, black market oil sales and US "protest" groups go through somewhere, and the Iranians had lots of capital due to Obama' pallets of unmarked cash for seed money.

It provides him global support to bomb the hell out of the next parts we want to bomb - increasingly all around the strait - wiping out Iran's capability for mischief there.

It's theater, and nothing more.
