Sunday Overnight Open Thread - August 2, 2026 [Doof]

Howdy Hordelings! Welcome to the Sunday ONT. Glad you could stop by! Open thread, as always. Fashion and music, as always. How's August treating you so far?

Pay attention to this guy. He seems to understand how immunity works in the human body

Hopefully he will be called upon years later to explain this when a big pandemic hits and people are wondering the best course of action.

-----

I've been sharing a lot of stuff about Flock cameras recently. Maybe I need to submit a Morning Rant thread about it so the daywalkers get to see this stuff.

Flock cameras are asshoe. Overreach and extremely counter to the 4th Amendment. Those who administer these things certainly understand the concept when they themselves are the ones being filmed. Here's another example.

-----

Feel good content.

Awesome stuff there.

-----

There's feel good content. I guess there can be sound good content. This, however, aint that.

This is from somewhere in Memphis. Horde members are almost old enough!

Cher’s Dress Reveals on The Cher Show: When Primetime Got a Little Spicey

In the mid-1970s, long before everyone tried for viral red-carpet shock and awe, there was Cher. And there was that moment, every week, when she stepped onto the stage of her variety series The Cher Show, draped in a dramatic cape, cloak, or feathered cover-up, only to whip it away and reveal something spectacular underneath.

Those dress reveals, masterminded by the legendary costume designer Bob Mackie, weren’t just costume changes. They were events. It was mix of glamour, calculated shock value, and absolute showmanship that pushed the boundaries of what American television audiences expected to see on a Wednesday night. Decades later, the clips still circulate wildly on social media, looking every bit as daring as they did fifty years ago.

The Ritual of the Reveal
The Cher Show followed the end of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour. Cher was now the solo star, and Mackie, already her trusted collaborator, went into overdrive. A single episode could feature multiple looks, but the signature moment was the dramatic unveiling. Underneath: a body-conscious confection of sequins, beads, cutouts, sheer illusion panels, feathers, and midriff-baring two-pieces that left little to the imagination.

Standout Moments That Still Sparkle
Among the many reveals, a few have achieved near-mythic status:

 • The “Satisfaction” rainbow two-piece that fans still rave about for its pure joy and color.

IMG_2470-rr.jpg

IMG_2478-rr.jpg

 • A striking turquoise number from “Got to Get You Into My Life”that stopped the show mid-spin.

IMG_2482-rr.jpg

IMG_2483-rr.jpg

 • The purple “Crocodile Rock” drama.

IMG_2487-rr.jpg

IMG_2486-rr.jpg

 • The white “Let Me Entertain You” sparkle

IMG_2480-rr.jpg

IMG_2484-rr.jpg

Each reveal felt like a mini fashion show compressed into a few electric seconds. The audience reaction, cheers, gasps, applause, it was all part of the performance. The sequined, feathered, cutout creations helped define the 1970s and continue to influence stage costumes, red-carpet risk-takers, and anyone who believes clothes should make an entrance. Glamour, after all, is best when it’s revealed.

Enjoy a compilation Cher’s season 1 reveals:

Oh, wow! You are very welcome! I didn't think most people read my yammerings!

I love that cookbook! The back cover is off and if I lost it I'd lose my Seafood Gumbo recipe forever! For about 2yrs after my father's mother's death I experimented til he said I had it like hers! She left no recipes, or very few, and was the most wonderful cook. Also the pecan pie recipe is a yearly treat for my men (I add more pecans that it calls for). Probably more. It was a wedding gift to me and I found one each for my DIL's.

My grandmother was woman who also could sew anything from looking at a picture. Before she married she was a milliner. I have photos.

She loved me bigly and I loved her right back as her only granddaughter. She had tears in her eyes when I moved West for college and that almost got me (I rarely cry). She did live to see my wedding and later our beautiful boys.

In the past, though, on a few planes I helped flight attendants and the worst words my dude or sons ever heard were, "I'm a RN." They would groan.

I continue to make them nervous. We have a new priest and I wanted to meet him today after Mass. Son said, "Mom, this is not the time to tell him your history." I said I would not and all I said was, "Welcome." He said, "Well, you've been known to say more." I get the same deal in the car afterwards from my dude and I repeated I said ONE WORD.

He laughed and said it's just that we know you are never boring. Basically they are telling me I need to be watched at all times or I might go off like a lunatic.

But the nearby fires are huge. The one from Malheur County is well over 300,000 acres. The one north of Weiser blew up from 15,000 to 95,000 acres overnight. We had a dusting of ash on our cars this morning.

Reminds me of Fort Collins in 2012 and 2023ish.

The PNW is burning. Spokane has evacuation orders.

I played it a lot on the band bus on the way home from games for a couple of years.

103 I have a contrarian opinion on the Flock cameras,

There is a town that has its own natural springs lake. Almost all of the shoreline and acreage back is privately owned—except for the dam and a couple long, thin peninsulas that the city.

One peninsula has a sign set up that asks visitors to not spend more than seven nights camping. Its a primitive park with a couple port-o-lets and maybe a dozen campsites that were defined organically by previous guests.

I'm guessing that the seven nights is an arbitrary number to keep it from turning into a homeless camp and annoying the lake house owners. Its too small to gate and staff. So how do they enforce it?

One Flock camera at the entrance. Get beyond its range and enjoy your lake side camping. The town has this only one camera.

Think of a better solution than a Flock camera.

I watched the Cher show when it first ran. She borrowed heavily from Carol Burnett, so much so that she had a segment where she took questions from the audience. Carol showed up in one segment as an audience member, and asked where she got the idea for taking questions from the audience. Off course it was all prearranged but Carol played it to the hilt and you saw the love that only good friends could sublimate for the sake of the joke. I dislike her because she's plastic inside and out. She claps her hands like a weird seal, which I realize I should not care about. She's had so much plastic surgery to her face her ears have grown larger, and I've read that's a sign of multiple face lifts. Fake. Fake. Fake.

I cannot imagine being that vain. I don't care about her marriages, surrogacy, or anything else. I'll be trying to find a movie and not watch it because of her.

Her parents were questionable, so I've read, in Australia. Father had something to do with pedo stuff and unsure of her mother. Kidman seems evil to me, otherwise I can't explain my disgust when I see her.

The medical system is incapable of admitting it was wrong. They just can't do it. Admitting their error, honestly evaluating why they screwed up and all that would be the way to restore confidence.

But the system is just flat-out incapable of doing that.

181 Well, I got ONE measly sheet of roofing tin hung on the inside wall of my big shop today. Yesterday was four sheets. It took so long because I am refining my technique. I have devised a way to use my car trailer winch as a hoisting apparatus in conjunction with a little jib boom with a pulley, clamped to the top of my rolling warehouse stairs. Made several efforts with a pulley block; nope that doesn't work. I am just about at the point of getting it right. The hook on the lifting cradle has to be lowered maybe 3 inches, so it doesn't hit the pulley before the top of the panel hits the ceiling. And I need to make some sort of rope guide or fairlead so the rope doesn't jump the pulley if the load is offset to the side a bit.

And I lost the little doggone magnet out of the end of my 1/4" hex driver bit. That sucks.

Contrary to opinions here, I think Cher was an amazing singer in her prime, Bang Bang and A Cowboy's Work is Never Done being two examples off the top of my head.

Their marriage ended because of Sonny's infidelities. I think all of his marriages ended because of this. Too bad. I recall a Grammy award show where they played a clip of him and Cher singing I Got You Babe and the camera cut to him collapsing into tears.

Yup, the song was "To Anacreon In Heaven."

We saw "The Odyssey" today because it was hot and we were bored. We remained bored but did get to eat popcorn and peanut M&M's, so there's that. It should be called "An Odyssey" because it sure wasn't Homer's Odyssey, as many people have mentioned. We had no expectations of this movie and it fulfilled them. It got us out of the house and that was about all one can say about it.

197 I've been sharing a lot of stuff about Flock cameras recently.

Authoritarians gotta, uh...authoritarianize. And there's the massive hypocrisy as always. Cops, city officials, Flock companies, they want you to submit to mass surveillance and violation of your fourth and fifth amendment rights, but freak the fuck out if you lawfully record them since they don't have control over your camera.

Well, what I made is a T-bar affair. Cross-piece 19" long, with J-hooks spaced at 18" to engage with standing ribs on tin panel. Three-foot length of steel tubing welded to the middle of that, eye welded to end. An inverted "T". Well, that didn't work. Top of panel wanted to topple away. Got a piece of larger tubing to slip over upright, welded fingers to the top of it go behind lip of J-strip screwed to top of panel. I welded an "S" hook at the 4-foot point to hook the winch line to. This works pretty well, except the "S" hook hits the boom pulley about the same time the top of the panel hits the ceiling. Next iteration, I will lower the "S" hook by three inches. A tiny bit of wiggle room. The lift itself goes very easy. My winch has polymer winch line, not wire rope.

245 The difference between Spokane and Tacoma is, quite remarkable. Spokane is high plateau, nearly desert, although apples grow there fairly well. Tacoma is on the ocean, a rather large port, part of the southern Puget Sound. Most stuff that gets shipped to AK comes through Tacoma Harbor.

Spokane, not so much.

246 Trump says the attack he's holding off on for now will the biggest since WWII.

Ummm.

Not even remotely close. By any measure. Which is completely unimportant of course. And marketing hyperbole is his schtick, and it's harmless and amusing and weirdly refreshing sometimes, especially when it shocks the straights.

But it does inspire a (pointless) pretty good trivia discussion for war geeks. Given there'll be zero ground component, it's hard to compare with WWII or post-war operations. But just for one case, any given day in the ATO (air tasking order) of the air campaign for Desert Storm probably had multiples of the biggest day with Iran. And it went on without pause for 6 weeks.

I'm sorry. That's the only part of your story I understood, which is not your fault at all.

I remembered the trauma of sewing my youngest granddaughter's quilt a year ago from that statement. I finally decided, after seven years, to clean out the bobbit case thing in my sewing machine.

Please keep in mind that I only sew, so far, when I have a deadline (in this case a baby flannel quilt).

I have a history of sewing trauma involving loud cussing, so my dude is usually on edge until he hears the machine purring along. I have to review how to thread it and tension creating much tension in me every time because I am not organized at all about anything.

Anyway, I proudly used the little brush to get lint out of the bobbin case when the tiny screw that attaches to the pressure foot fell into the case.I could see it but tweezers were not cutting it. A complete collapse of society was near and my dude had a tiny magnet and saved the life of me and the machine from us both hurling out the window.

Good night all.

Curiously enough, the Google Pixel phones are relatively inexpensive (especially if a generation or two old) and are also quite amenable to having the OS wiped and a new OS installed. Graphene OS is some sort of a fork off Android, and it relies upon a particular security chip which is found in the Pixel phones (and some others). No Google account required, no Google Play store, no tracking, no ads served. Apparently apps can be side-loaded, or bought from other servers. I don't use apps, anyway.

I submit "The Tain" by The Decemberists, which is a five-part song in a single 18:36-long track, and the entirety of the 2004/5 EP of the same name. If you have a 35-minute commute, you can just pop the CD in, start singing along, and when it's done, you're past the halfway point. I have done that many times.

You likely already know if you dislike Colin Meloy's voice or the band's style, in which case don't bother, since this is the distilled essence of Decemberistness. But it goes both ways -- if you do like them, then you must:
