A dog was rushed to an emergency veterinary clinic in Australia after eating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms. Animal Emergency Service Jindalee said 3-year-old beagle Scooter was brought in by her panicked owners after consuming an entire bag of gummy worms - known in Australia as "jelly snakes." Veterinary nurse manager Kate Wesche said the candies luckily did not contain xylitol, a chemical that can be toxic to dogs, but veterinarians made the decision to induce vomiting anyway due to concerns about the high sugar content. Scooter ended up regurgitating 2.4 pounds of gummy worms. Wesche told 1News Scooter had "clearly no regrets in her decision."Please secure your gummy worms. For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too. His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most - not the nutritional value of the food. The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months. For a class project, Haub limited himself to less than 1,800 calories a day. A man of Haub's pre-dieting size usually consumes about 2,600 calories daily. So he followed a basic principle of weight loss: He consumed significantly fewer calories than he burned. But you might expect other indicators of health would have suffered. Not so. Haub's "bad" cholesterol, or LDL, dropped 20 percent and his "good" cholesterol, or HDL, increased by 20 percent. He reduced the level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, by 39 percent.Science!

Official diagnosis for now is Cellulitis. So lots of antibiotics until they get everything cleared up. Don't know when they are going to spring me from here; hopefully I won't spend my entire "vacation" here. I still want to see the GG Bridge and the redwoods! And my grandsons....
My roommate in the hospital does not speak English. Nor does anyone in her family. The hospital staff has to "call" interpreters to translate everything for this woman and her family, which takes 3-4 times as long as normal to explain everything.
Someone out there is making bank on these translation services.

Lucy the Fink is purring beside me. It’s Smokey here. I can smell wood smoke in my living room. Too warm to close the windows. Not bad though. 72. Should get down into the 50s overnight. Will be smokey and mid 80s next few days. Ugh. Makes for an intense sunset.

Some poster was angry in June that he couldn't buy SPX stock at the offering price. It was over-subscribed, but the poster suspected a CONSPIRACY.
Anyway, it opened on the first day of trading at appx $135, & shot up to $192 the next day. Today, a little over 2 months later, it changes hands at $108. SPX lost 14% today.
I follow SPX for my amusement only. I'd rather invest in lottery tickets.

General Relativity famously allows time travel in the most general case. Godel famously proved that with what is now known as the Godel metric. It required a rotating universe with a *negative* cosmological constant.
He intuitively saw the field equations allowed for this. Einstein said "Bullshit, Kurt!". Godel said, "I'll prove it." He did. When Godel said he could prove something, well look out.
The only problem with that is it leads to contradictions, Grandfather paradox the most famous one. Hawking proposed the "Chronology Protection Conjecture" which is a hypothesis that other laws of physics prevent such solutions from ever being possible.
That remains unproven.

Had a beagle who learned to open the refrigerator, pulled out a glass casserole full of cheese potatoes in cream sauce with pork chops on top, ate the entire thing after breaking the glass, so who knows how much glass she ingested. I tried to get her to puke, but she just didn't.

The Grandfather Paradox of time travel is the classic logical inconsistency: if I exist, I cannot exist, and if I don't exist, then I must exist.
How can the universe tolerate such a thing? Logic break downs. But there is another little trick. Suppose we say, never kill your grandfather or do anything that will result in such a paradox.
You can still have something very strange, a causal loop, a simple example is turning the Grandfather Paradox on its head. Rather than killing my grandfather, I go back in time and save my grandfather. Suppose I pop out in the past and notice my grandfather is about to be killed, and I act to save him.
I am now my own cause. I exist because I exist. This is a casual loop. A spacetime that allows such is dubbed acausal. Anything can happen. Matter/energy can exist in such loops "in the future" and can't be predicted from the initial conditions. Causality still breaks down.

Until I was twelve I got shuffled off to bed most nights at ten p.m., and the babysitter took over. The year I turned twelve, Mom said, "I think you boys are old enough to be left alone now." She left at ten p.m. for private-duty nurse assignments at one of the hospitals, and of course my brother (four years younger) and I would stay up to watch at least part of Carson.
I preferred Merv Griffin's original syndicated Westinghouse show, held in a small theatre in NYC and featuring new comics like Rodney Dangerfield, Richard Pryor, and Joanne Worley (later of Laugh-In). It aired at midnight here, so I didn't usually stay up for it except on Friday nights.

Cats prefer to get their water from food, the wet food is good for them. I have two cats that are 17 years old, and I credit that in part to them getting a quarter of a can of wet food in the evening, and an eighth of a can in the morning.
The other cats of that cadre are gone, now, one to cancer and one to an owl, but the wet food helps stretch their lives out I think.

Plus, no one ever seems to address the issue that it's a time-space continuum, which means that one must not only set a temporal destination, but then must also find the exact physical location of the temporal destination one wishes to travel to, which without a Universal reference and a spaceship is impossible.

Actually, yes. Well, "detailed" might be too far.
But, they used to have a fantastic sandmap (probably 8-10 feet across) setup at the visitor's center there, with a recorded narration, a clock on the wall, and little lights that lit up when they spoke about that particular unit. It was about a half hour, IIRC. Then it would loop and start over.
They redid the visitor's center a few decades ago, and I don't recall if that feature made it back or not.

Aug 12th is the peak of the Perseid shower. It will be new Moon, and also a solar eclipse. We won't see shit, the path will be far north, and then dip down over Spain. This will be the first total eclipse visible in the Spanish mainland since 1905. And then they'll get another one next year.
And, Jupiter, just coming off solar conjunction will just be visible before sunrise, and you'll get Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn all in the morning sky.

I had a Minolta that was pretty good. IIRC, it had sliding telephoto lens, and built-in electronic flash. Nice thing about it: very compact, would fit in a shirt pocket.

According to the NASA globe dealie, I might see a 20% eclipse.
Got three more sheets of roofing tin hung on the shop wall today. I am about run out of suitable screws. And I now have to re-shuffle stuff in the shop, like the hoist, to gain access to the next section of wall to be clad. I rejiggered my hoist so the jib boom with the pulley now sticks straight out in front of me as I stand on the stairs. I can now better see what I am doing, but I am forced to use a 2 foot long extension on my screw gun to drive the screws. But it seems to go a little faster this way, and I can put some good muscle into the screw gun without inducing a sideways wobble on the stairway.
Anyhow, going to get an early one. I want to get on the road for Red Deer at 0700 to get to the passport office to do a renewal.

There is always shitty frigging weather in jersey when the Perseid shower comes around. The only time I ever saw them good was in S. Dakota during the sturgis rally. This year sturgis starts tomorrow and goes to the 16th, so again, anybody there is going to have a nice meteor show.

I've always had bad look with meteor showers, too. The only time I see any is when I'm not looking for 'em.
And we'll get a partial lunar eclipse visible here over most of the US (it's centered over South America this time -- look at some of the map projections and you'll see it)

A 20 year old West Virginia University student entered not guilty pleas in Monongalia County Magistrate Court and was released on a $15,000 personal recognizance bond. He is accused of acting as an accomplice in the vandalism of automated license plate reader cameras.
Investigators state a Flock Safety camera was cut down and removed near Chestnut Ridge Road and Suburban Court in Morgantown on or about June 26, 2026.
One felony count of damage, destruction, or theft of equipment used by emergency responders, and one felony count of conspiracy.
This co-defendant was linked to the case via co-defendant Wesley Jackson, 20, who was arrested previously in July 2026 in connection with the same targeted camera destructions.
He is represented by Rosnick Law, which emphasized his presumption of innocence and noted that the case touches on wider privacy debates surrounding automated public surveillance.

Aug 12th is the peak of the Perseid shower. It will be new Moon, and also a solar eclipse. We won't see shit, the path will be far north, and then dip down over Spain. This will be the first total eclipse visible in the Spanish mainland since 1905. And then they'll get another one next year.
And, Jupiter, just coming off solar conjunction will just be visible before sunrise, and you'll get Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, and Saturn all in the morning sky.

On average, the Perseids have a average "peak zenithal hourly rate" (ZHR) of about 50 - 75 per hour. That's sort of an optimum based on clear dark skies, and if the radiant were directly overheard. You can look ZHR up if interested and how to calculate the real hourly rate from that.
So, theoretically, it's a pretty nice shower, with around 1 per minute expected at the ideal.

Probably one of the most intense meteor storms of all time was the 1833 Leonid storm (note "storm" rather than shower). Maybe 28 meteors per second.
Peak thought the world was ending at the time. Read the accounts, and there are some famous paintings.
That led to the formation of meteor science, and their true understanding as coming from space. Before that, they didn't really know, although Halley and some others of his day, calculated they had to be pretty high up in the air, and he suspected they were from space, but the idea of little space rocks wasn't known.

Halley himself didn't spell it consistently. He wasn't even consistent with his first name, sometimes Edmund, sometimes Edmond. At the time, Hailey, Haley, Haly, Hawley, Hawly, were used.
Halley has just become the standard spelling and pronunciation now. Really, there's no real definitive proof of how he would've pronounced it.

THis is interesting. Up until the early 1800s, Western science largely rejected meteorites as being anything other than superstition and tall tales. That is, actual rocks falling from the sky.
Around 1794, a German scientist published an analysis of some of the supposed meteorites, showing their composition was quite different from earth rocks. The rejected that as just crazy talk. In 1803, there were a bunch of meteorites that fell in some French town, and they sent Jean-Baptiste Biot to investigate (He's the Biot in the Biot-Savart Law).
He conclusively proved the rocks fell from the sky and probably from outer space.
The science is never settled.

It went all the way back to Aristotle, who argued that meteors were due to combustible vapors drawn up from the earth by the sun's heat.
And that view sort of persisted up until 1803. They thought the "vapors" were of volcanic origin and such maybe, and if any actual stones fell, it was again due to volcanos throwing them up.

I also verified that turning off javascript on the damned Chrome for Android for this site worked as well, although embedding videos and that sort of stuff wouldn't work either.
The Edge browser for Android does have AdBlock in there somehow, don't remember if I had to install that or what, but it also blocked all this stuff. So, I'm basically just using Edge on the phone now for everything.

Something I've noticed with Chrome and the others with Ublock running is that CPU will often spike after loading and reloading the comments page here. Sometimes for a long time.
I don't know for sure, but I suspect that's some of the ad stuff trying to run. I don't see it, but the way a lot of this works is it just hides it, but it still runs.

Yeah, we really do need new ones. Was looking at new Dells since every one we got lasted forever. I think mine here is over 10 years old, and it just keeps working. My hard drive is getting full. I want a new one with those septillion gig hard drives and a billion ram, lol. Ram seems pretty damn expenisve these days. I have 16gig on this one and it was nowhere as pricey as 16 gigs of ram is today. The pc I was looking at was like $2200 by the time I added everything I wanted.
