Florida carries out rare double execution including ex-cop who killed girl, 11 Florida has taken the ‘incredibly rare’ step of executing two prisoners on the very same day. Former police officer James Duckett, 68, and Dominick Occhicone, 80, both died at Florida State Prison near Starke on Tuesday. The two men were put to death by lethal injection just five hours apart, becoming the 11th and 12th people executed by the state this year. Duckett was convicted of the 1987 rape and murder of 11-year-old Teresa McAbee. Occhicone received the death penalty for murdering his former fiancée’s parents, Raymond and Martha Artzner, in 1986.

JULY 29--Setting fire to the church where you are scheduled to be married is no cure for a bride-to-be’s cold feet. Police allege that a 25-year-old woman started a blaze earlier this month inside a Utah church as family members were setting up for a wedding ceremony planned for the following day, according to a probable cause affidavit. After a fire alarm sounded inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Kaysville, a Salt Lake City suburb, relatives were able to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and “water from some of the wedding decorations.” There were six individuals in the church (seen above) when the fire was lit. “The cost of building repair to date is just over $108,000,” police noted. The blaze, arson investigators reported, appeared to have started beneath a chair stacked along a wall in the church’s Relief Society room. “Under one of the chairs appeared to be items that were out of the ordinary, including what appeared to be a tampon with the applicator on the floor,” a cop reported.

This is what the Democrats are doing right now. By presenting full throated communism and having their "mainstream" explicitly denounce it, they are effectively using the Trump Strategy but as the greater party at large.
This gives them two huge advantages to go with all the other advantages it gives. One, it extinguishes all previous accusations from Republicans and Trump that mainstream Democrats are communists. What the Democrats are saying is "no, *these* are the communists". As the Democrats slowly absorb the energy and ideas and "soften" to the more "moderate" solutions, they get the advantage of both an appearance of moderation AND jerking the country Left while having it seem totally organic.

One key is asymmetrical number of trees, etc. and you've got that compared to other paintings a few months ago.
Also, the water reflection is not easy and is lovely in this one. My teacher (lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains) said to achieve this sometimes hold the painting upside down before finishing.
This one is very pretty.

Cermak died after two weeks, so they switched to a murder trial midstream. The perp was apprehended, arraigned, tried, convicted and executed in 32 days.

Agreed. The immediacy of deterrence has gone out the window, and the poor suffering families of the murder victims are tortured by the delays. Execution date should be no more than 90 days after the final appeal is heard. And every delaying tactic used by the defense, or anti-death penalty busybodies, should result in a 10% reduction of the voltage used in the chair, making for a longer and more painful death.

Something I find very inconsistent in death penalty opponents; if a killer is stopped in the act (hopefully before completion) then we cheer someone (police OR bystander) who ends that killers life on the spot. BUT if he is found 5 minutes later, snd just laughs while he is arrested, we get to spend 40 years taking care of him while everyone plays expensive legal games.

Vast numbers of people think "space is cold" (because it's a vacuum) and that should be easy. Because they don't realize 1) that space is only cold where there's nothing making heat and there's no sunlight to add heat, and 2) just how much the motion of air and water does to take away heat on Earth. Most CIA research was done openly by universities, except the really nasty stuff, and even then people talk.
Some works, especially the first new wave 1965-73, may have been put out as paid "seeding" to legitimize or make interesting certain things. Michael Kurland wrote about such things in one of his omnibus subject books, The Spymaster's Handbook, which talked about the Suretee causing detective novels to be written before and after WWI so they could put certain ideas into heads, like how to deal with suspected spies.

No. Without an atmosphere, heat that radiates away does so regardless of motion, and heat that convects away… doesn’t. Motion won’t help in either case. If they could move to always keep the earth blocking the sun, that might help, although I don’t know how much. I’m not sure that orbit is either possible or useful however.

Fyi, the average time on death row for those who are eventually executed is 17-18 years.
Obviously, this excludes the 50% of death row inmates who spent time on death row, but had their death sentences overturned on appeal.
There are 2 levels of appeal, of course. State appeals, and only after those are exhausted, the federal appeals start. Back to square one, only this time in federal court.
Most judges despise the death penalty, and they'll look very hard for a reason to overturn those sentences. That's why appx 50% of all death sentences are reversed and remanded.

That was the problem. They had to design the whole thing with thermal control in mind. Now, all the internal electronics and systems would be making a lot of heat. The whole thing was designed around handling that heat load. When they shut it down, they were suddenly outside that design envelope.
They still had to do the famous "BBQ roll". Uneven heating, one side of the spacecraft in sunlight and the other facing dark could not be tolerated. The temp differences would've warped things too much.
Looking it up, the LM stayed a little bitter warmer than the CM. Some of its systems were still on, and you had a little bit of body heat from the crew. LM temp stabilized at around 50F, while CM temp was about 38 - 40F.

And Commies being Commies, the system failed - resentment grew between the doers and the takers, when everyone had an equal share.
Unlike the Marxists, they realized it failed. They scrapped the idea after a short time, granted families a plot of land, and ownership of what they produced. Capitalism was born, and it worked.

I think there are some marvelous talents out there, but in this atomized entertainment realm we have today, those talents don't get as wide of exposure as they used to. I recently watched the Halston biopic mini-series on Netflix, and it featured some singer/actress playing the part of Liza Minelli. She was FANTASTIC. Go to some local theater productions and you might be amazed.
But generally, we don't have great vehicles. That remake of A Star Is Born with Lady Gaga was awful awful awful. She's a good singer, maybe puts on a good live show, maybe a good actress, but who would know with that lousy script? Ugh and I hate to mention it, but that Snow White actress. Very good singer and she reportedly was a smash in Evita in London. But that's another thing, today's entertainers kill the fun with their stupid yakkety-yak.

I got to reading about the thermal control systems on the ISS. It has about 6500 sq ft of thermal radiators to reject the heat from the ISS proper, and some more radiators to handle the heat from the solar arrays.
Total heat rejection capacity is about 120 kW. But I think they can increase that somewhat if they have to.

If you set it all up rock-solid, it could be done. Garage 54 did an episode where they used abrasive blocks in place of brake pads to resurface brake rotors. My brake lathe was bought used from a shop that was closing down. It works just fine. Today, I figured out how to make the automatic feed work, which I thought was broken. So I could set the cutter, turn it on, and let it make a pass all on its lonesome. When the carriage reaches the end of its travel, it hits a switch, stopping the feed.

Everyone wanted to save money back in the day, and do brake work themselves. Probably half the cars brought in for brake work had fucked up brakes, because somebody’s other brother Daryl or brother in law thought he could git ‘er done.
One thing they did was sell oversized linings, to closely fit the drum, depending on how far it had been turned. Then they woukd get arc’d on the brake shoe machine to have a near 100% contact patch from the start. Of course they used asbestos for brake linings, and brake shop guys all smoked like chimneys. They never actually outlawed brake shoe arc machines but they all pretty much went bye-bye along with drum brakes.

Drum brakes are subject to fade on long downhill runs, or running through water. And rust and corrosion soon locks up the “self-adjust” feature.About 70% of stopping power is achieved by the front axle. Drum brakes held on for a long time on the rear axle, but often they aren’t doing much of anything at all. Parking brake is a lot easier with drums, I think that’s the only reason why they kept ‘em for the rear axle.

That thermal control thing was one of the big factors in the moon landing considerations and engineering. They landed during the early morning, low sun angle. This meant low surface temperatures -- it was just beginning to warm up, and the low sun angle made for long shadows which helped during landing. They could see boulders and obstacles better.
During Apollo 11, surface temperature measurements ranged from -9F to 45F.
During the longer duration J missions it got a lot hotter during the stay, 120F - 150F surface temperature. It hit 180Fish during Apollo 16's last EVA. Charlie Duke said, "Boy, it's hot out here today!".
But they all left before the 250F maximum.

Interesting. Charlie Duke had tight strap on his PLSS backpack, which compressed the suit at a point, and he noted he could really feel the Sun at that spot.
The suits performed well, but the cooling system did have to run a little higher than normal.

When disc brakes first came out, shops had to re-tool to do them. Old drum brake lathes cannot cut rotors. And there was a learning curve, too.

A "brake tool kit" is worth its weight in gold! There's one tool that you poke through the loose end of spring, after affixing the other end to the shoe, and then put tool on the the stud at top of backing plate, and lever the spring's hook over the stud. Much easier than the pliers/vice grips method.
And wear a face shield!!! I'd wear a leather apron as well.

The harley drum brakes are a riot. They were originally mechanical. Hydraulic rear came out in '58 and were made by bendix. They were never great. The mechanical rear brakes would flatten your eyeballs when you hit the pedal. The hydraulic ones were just decent. All were fairly easy to work on. Mechanical front brakes lasted until '72 and they were basically a suggestion. Disk brakes came out in '73 and they blew ass. They didn't get better until the early 80's.

The euros use semi-metallic pads and a softer steel for discs. They are routinely noisy and dirty across different makes and models. Brake dust on wheels. But holy shit, those fuckers can stop on a dime, which is exactly what you want, especially on high speed roadways.

I have never had any hands-on experience with anything Harley-Davidson. Not because of any phobia, or dislike, or anything. Like Studebakers, they mark their territory! (and if Studebaker had lasted longer, they would have cured that, just like HD did, LOL)
I have one rare old bike here: a 1970 (+/-) Greeves Griffon. It is a pure motocross bike, not road legal. They were made with a 380 cc two-stroke engine of Greeve's design, built, AFAIK, by Villiers. The bike I have is in amazingly good condition for a 50 year old motorcycle, but some farm boy wedged a Kawasaki 350 rotary valve 2-stroke into the frame. The engine is nearly as old as the bike.

Those little pads on the backing plates are called "tables". When I find them to be worn with grooves, I run a bead with the MIG welder, and grind them smooth. And when I assemble the brakes, those tables and other metal-to-metal friction points get a dab of anti-seize compound.

The big problem with mechanical brakes was equalizing the braking effort from side to side. That, and brake cables inside jackets rusting up solid.

Looks like a deal for SpaceX to acquire Pecan Island is about to be finalized. This will be a new space port, and will sit halfway between Starbase and Florida. They will have launch facilities there, as well as testing and other facilities and will be a major hub between Texas and Florida.
This will be on of the largest projects in LA history.

Yep, Elon is going to get this Moon base thing done. When all these 3 locations are fully operational, he'll have one hell of launch cadence capability. If something goes boom on one of his pads, he'll have many more to keep going with.

I know. I picked up a harley for Mrs B a few days ago. The seller was an older guy that was getting out of riding. Bike was kept like a holy relic, absolutely beautiful. It was about 50 miles away. I gave him a deposit, and told him i would have to make arrangements to get it home. He tells me just ride it home on my plate and registration, and when you come back with the rest of the money I'll give you the title. Ok cool. Bike checked out nice. On the way home after a 25 mile highway cruise I saw the oil light come on when I hit the first traffic light at idle. A wee bit of throttle and it went out. Yeah, not good. I got home and noticed the cylinder base gaskets were leaking. I called him, he said he changed the oil sending unit thinking it was the problem. Not the problem. He says just bring it back. Nice guy. He offered a good reduction in price, but I didn't enjoy the "immediate necessity" of having to do top end gaskets and an oil pump. Shame though, it was a cream puff. It rode beautiful.

Besides, Cat came here because of former owners' adoption of a loud, active dog... with which Cat didn't "get along" and so he fled to my yard! He's welcome here, LOL.
When Cat crosses the Rainbow Bridge (he's 14 now) I will take a break from pet-ownership. May or may not resume.
Perhaps, after some time, I'd consider fostering. Or, adopting an older pet. Wouldn't want to 'leave a critter behind' when I die!

I love dogs, but can't do it. My lifestyle is geared around being light on my feet. I didn't have kids because of that, and I'm going to do it with animals? Not happening. Maybe once I'm older and have nothing left to do. I really do love dogs. Cats, not so much.

The problem with pit bulls is that some of them are very docile and wonderful, and some are just plain nuts, and you can't tell the difference by looking. A perfectly wonderful dog will just decide one day to eat your face. You can't predict it, and you can't defend from it.
No point in taking that chance, since there are so many other dogs out there looking for homes.

Heck, Spokane was under water back then, under glacial lake Columbia. Lake Missoula was to the west in Montana.

They think the main carving of the Grand Canyon started about 5 - 6 mya. But certain segments and valleys may go back well before that.
There are still some mysteries about it. The main thing is uplift, the rocks and all were pushed up raising the Colorado Plateau, and the river then started carving it out. The unknowns lie in just how that happened the way it did.
There was a also a recent study that found that the impact that created Meteor Crater out there, about 56 kya ago, triggered an earthquake that dammed up the Colorado, forming a lake, which then later burst.

There is the conflict between uniformitarianism (gradualism) and catastrophism. Some of the first geologists back in the day believed in the Biblical Flood and explained a lot of things through that lens.
Uniformitarianism arose in opposition to that, and it sort of became a bit dogmatic, exactly the thing it was originally "fighting" with the Flood thing.
The truth is in between. Indeed, earth's history is probably like that old saying, "long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror".

See J. Harlen Bretz, the geologist who first proposed the Missoula flood theory. He was met with scathing opposition -- they hated him and wanted to destroy him (and this was due to the Biblical Flood thing). He persisted and prevailed. Right before he died, he was awarded the most prestigious Penrose Medal, the highest honor in geology.
