Ukraine Drones Reach All the Way to the Caspian Sea to Destroy Two Sanctioned Russian Ships Delivering Iranian Military Equipment to Russia

There's a lot of whining from the Russians and Iranians and the hard left, but the rules are clear, ships transporting arms and military gear are fair targets in war.

And Russia is meanwhile sinking Ukranian ships delivering grain to foreign buyers. So, fair is fair.

Ukraine struck an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea, claiming it was transporting drone and missile components to Russia, marking the first direct military link between the wars in Ukraine and Iran.

Well... it is also reported that Russia is providing Iran with the targeting data it uses to hit our bases with missiles, including the deadly attack on a base in Jordan a couple of weeks ago.

Iran vowed retaliation, accusing Kyiv of violating international law, while Ukraine defended the strike as part of its campaign to disrupt Russia's military supply chains and its partnership with Tehran.

The attack carries broader geopolitical implications, potentially deepening coordination between Russia and Iran while signaling closer strategic alignment between Ukraine and the U.S. amid the expanding regional conflict.

While details of the July 25 incident are murky, Ukraine's intelligence agency the SBU said its drones hit an oil platform in the Caspian Sea along with a Russian missile boat and "cargo ships that are under international sanctions."

President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday announced that Ukrainian forces had achieved "very good results" in long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including against vessels used to transport military cargo linked to Iran.


As you probably know, Ukraine has been sinking Russian military and sanctioned cargo ships throughout the Black Sea, despite having no navy. They use drones, both flying and water-borne.

They're intensifying the war against the Russian economy and military supply lines, blowing up oil refineries so that oil-rich Russia actually has a fuel crisis. And they're also hitting the factories of Russia's mega-store Wildberries, called Russia's Amazon.

Wildberries itself might go bankrupt from having $4 billion of the stock stored at its warehouses destroyed. The company itself is worth only $9 billion.

Russian banks are limiting customers from withdrawing their money and oligarchs are warning that a bank crisis is coming. A Wildberries bankruptcy might collapse the whole system.



The war is going very badly for Russia. It turns out their vaunted army was third-or-fourth rate. Their equipment just doesn't work well and sometimes doesn't work at all. This is due to Russia's relative poverty and backwardness and probably also due to governmental corruption.

The CIA director estimates that the average life expectancy of a Russian soldier at the Ukraine front is... thirty minutes.

The war is extremely unpopular in Russia. So unpopular that Putin has flinched from using Russia's big advantage, its huge population advantage. So far, Russia is mostly using ethnic minorities from the peripheral states it dominates as well as prisoners and the sick. He pays people an $80,000 signing bonus -- and that's dollars, not rubles -- which is a huge amount of money in Russia.

He does not want to draft ethnic Russians, especially those living in the cities and the middle or intellectual classes.

But with a 30 minute life expectancy, it's getting harder and harder to field men for Putin's "three day Special Military Operation."

Reports say that after the elections, when he feels his power is safe and he won't have to face the public for another couple of years, he will in fact order a big draft to bring 500,000 fresh draftees into the army.

That might be enough to finally break Ukraine... or it might wind up breaking Putin. Russia does have a tendency towards coups, especially during unpopular wars.

Hate to say it, but we have been giving targeting information, and even mid course correction information to Ukraine for a couple of years now.

I'm old enough to remember when Russia invaded Crimea, the people said the Russians were drunk, smoked a lot and were only interested in driving tanks into ATM's and stealing all the money.


But they should be feared, yo.

well I am happy I can talk with my Ukrainian diaspora friends now and we are all happy together.

then again things are rolling since we have competent (mostly) leadership in the US military. that could change (but let's hope not!)

the drone stuff is really interesting. talk about a meritocracy. the Ukr. people are not stupid, and they are flexible thinkers. it's interesting to follow how this develops.

this is the future of warfare.

On paper there's not much stopping Russia militarily from taking out power plants although Ukraine might be able to do some damage in parallel.

Things are heating up, at least in how broadly both sides are striking, but I'm not seeing much evidence of either materially strengthening their position.

37 Zelenskyy was in the UK a few days ago. The basis is that Ukraine wants to build a Drone Factory in the UK using money confiscated from Russia via sanctions. The purpose, I'm afraid to say, it two fold.

1. And peace deal eventually reached between Russia and Ukraine will require the return of those funds by the UK and the EU. They want to spend them to make a peace deal very difficult to achieve.

2. UK is NATO sovereign soil. If Russia (or someone pretending to be Russian) blows up that factory, that triggers emergency consultations under Article 4 and risk the invocation of Article 5 collective defense, massive economic sanctions, and potential direct military retaliation. Ukraine has captured and shot down Russian drones. They could easily set up a ruse to force NATO into military action...(which means the US)...That has been Zelenskyy's and the EU's and UK's goal all along.

These are NOT out allies.

We watched 5 seasons of The Last Ship (the USS Nathan James) and I am now an expert with naval warfare. Just like I could land a plane from playing Flight Simulator with my sons.

I note the bridge is on fire on that ship and now understand why. I did not pay much attention (what is new?) til I watched our Navy/Marines talking to ships in the Strait recently and firing on that part of the ship as well.

It was a pretty good series til the last one, and we watched them all and had our favorite actors.

56 The "Sanctioned Vessels" in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov hit recently were Russian grain ships which where by agreement early in the war were allowed to ship Russian grain out to the third world. Under that agreement Russia allowed the Ukrainians to trade out of Odessa. That agreement lapsed a while ago.

After hitting the ships in the sea of Azov, Russia responded by hitting the ships and ports around Odessa pretty heavily, which is where a lot of their arms industry was and, of course where they got trade income. Reports are this hurt the Ukrainians pretty badly.

That stuff is not that durable. Shell a power plant with artillery for a bit and you won't be able to use it, let alone two years.

Both sides until earlier this year have been relatively restrained in attacks on civilian elements.

The war is now expanding to include them. Will that speed things up? Perhaps. It's not obvious that this would favor Ukraine though.

so far, where the rubber hits the road the Russians continue a methodical advance in the Donbass. A week or so ago about 15000 Ukr troops were pocketed, though I did not see if any got out. Ukr's ability to stop the advances is pretty limited. Russia is limited by the ability of drones to contest resupply and quick movement of troops for reinforcement or breakouts with the limited crappy roads in Ukraine, especially after all the years of war.

That CIA stat about 30 minutes is laughable, however. They've been trying to sell the human wave stuff since 2022.

Again, the entire power infrastructure is within range. There aren't magical shields or something protecting them. Both sides from time to time have accused each other of endangering one power plant or another, but neither have launched serious attacks on them, even to this point.

Further escalation might see them actually start taking out power plants.

Russia has plenty of room to escalate, nor will moralizing at them prevent them from doing so. Changing this war from a grinding one of miltiary attrition to one of pressuring civilians may be a dangerous game of chicken where both sides start doing serious infrastructure damage.

So for Ukraine, they have less room to escalate than Russia, so fighting this by attrition has made sense, they remain outnumbered and outgunned.

For Russia, they believe they are taking out NATO equipment for cheap, which is also correct. NATO equipment in the hands of NATO troops, aka US troops, would be much harder to destroy.

The west regards it as a win that they should keep fighting.

There is no clear alternate path to victory so that's been the status quo.

Earlier in the war both sides had a tacit agreement to restrict the front to the south and south east to around Kharkov area - presumably because neither side could not man the full front. A few times over the years Ukraine has raided, or invaded in these zones and now the front has extended to close to the Belarus border, giving Ukraine that much more ground to cover. Limited wars do tend to grow, but given the limited manpower of Ukraine I think the result was not justified by the positive press and the eventual losses when Russia ejected them from Russia proper.

After the initial push and retreat. Russia has since postured at expanding the front through Belarus but not done so.

At any rate the military situation remains largely a stalemate. Making this about who can inflict and endure more civilian suffering is risky but will speed things up. If it gets all the way to power plants we're going to have millions of refugees in Europe, again.

Apple TV does have 'free movies' in the movies section.
Some are their own original productions (like 'F1' with Brad Pitt) and the rest are licensed. You just have to scroll down and find them in the categories section. The free movies don't have the shopping bag icon for rent/buy

They have nowhere near the selection of Netflix or Amazon, there might be a few hundred on there at most.

The Donbass and the 4 Regions are not only mostly under Russian control, Russia actually formally incorporated them into the country, and now occupy about 90 percent of them physically. The areas near Kharkov and Kursk are also being hinted at being kept.

I can't see Russia allowing Odessa to become a NATO base at all, so either that goes to them or some sort of open city stuff would have be done.

While there is a blockade the US has otherwise avoided targeting much of Iran's civilian economy directly. Iran has little capability to respond if we should do so and such options are being considered, but there are humanitarian concerns.

Ultimately a long enough blockade would still create a crisis though.

Russian advances tend to be that way, troops rush to a new town or woodlot, dig in, then just expand this finger out with time. You do that in another place, and eventually engulf anyone in between. Ukraine's offensive punch seems about nil.

Large bombers are very expensive. Just heard in an audio book that in 1942 Bomber command was using 42 percent of UK military expenditures for about no result at all and high losses.

In Germany, the strategic Airforce and Navy had to tussle with the Army and tactical air for resources, which they always would lose because that's what you need to overrun Europe.

Russia has small go-carts on remote control for carrying ammo and supplies in or evaccing wounded. The other jobs can be done just as easily by a drone, or using a tank or artillery gun from miles in the rear to blow up a pillbox or building. These still work.
