Tissington is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Tissington and Lea Hall, in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England. In 2001 the parish had a population of 158. I'm hauling this trailer around and the other day one of the airbags under the trailer (they're part of the suspension) blew. Fuck. After some bullshit, eventually got fixed *after* getting a load. Great. Fantastic. Rolling along the next day and BANG! Two airbags in the OTHER side blow. Fuck. Pull into a Love's. They try but can't fix it. Load's too heavy, they don't have jacks good enough to lift the trailer. Problem is the trailer is nearly riding on the tires. Good news! There's a place down the road that can help. Bad news, have to wait until morning.
I'm sick of this fucking trailer. It's one problem after the next. The load delivers Friday afternoon in San Antonio and I would like to be home by the weekend. Fuck my life.

Military spending is vastly outstripped by debt service and entitlements. The scope of the corruption is staggering. We still don't know how much of it there was because the responsible parties are doing everything they can to cover it up.
But yes, let's hear again how our poor, impovrished Learing Centers should have all the money they need and the military should have a bake sale for a bomber.
And then compare teacher salaries and retirements to what military members get.

They are restarting the Philadelphia ship yards and bringing in foreign countries because our Navy has fallen way behind China which has an enormous naval advantage over us. This is one of Trump's biggest initiatives. Are you saying Trump is corrupt? That seems odd.
Naval contracts for new ships of virtual every class are being awarded to states all over the country. Not gonna apologize for my state, which suffered greatly as the Navy was allowed to wither, winning a contract to build some of them. That will help some of the folks in my area who were hammered over the last couple decades.
You know what's odd? People who are cheering every day for a massive war in Iran and then insisting we don't need actual weapons to fight big wars.

By a strange coincidence, I've reached the point in the book I'm reading ("The Machine Crusade" by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson) where a private contractor is being threatened by the Butlerian Jihad to have his revolutionary new space-folding ships seized to fuel the war machine. He's struggling to make them understand that he *needs* compensation so that he has the funds to build ships, but they just want to take them NOW and maybe someday compensate him later if they win the war.

It’s a legacy going back to 1941 for the most part.
After Pearl Harbor, the government came within a red nether hair of completely nationalizing all industries and manufacturing. Very close. But keep in mind they wanted to maximize production. They wanted to actually win a two front global war, which was in some doubt on both fronts.
Cooler, wiser heads prevailed. So while they prohibited production of all consumer civilian goods, with rare exception, they settled on an incentive program for manufacturers.

Multitude is the wrong word to use here. Freidman would have not used it in the first place since he cultivated a more "folksy" approach to his audiences, and "a variety of reasons" is really more approachable for gen.pop.con.
Multitude has implications of "more than three" and so far you have only given two reasons. I admit there are more implied, but you really need to foreshadow more to make it work.

The Navy has been allowed to deteriorate for decades and the only way we can stop the process is a massive infrastructure investment. We need hulls now and shipyards for tomorrow.
The thing you are missing is that those shipyards can also be used to make merchant ships, rebuilding the US commercial fleet. This has been a major topic in Navy circles for years and Trump is finally actually doing it.
The guy has run the leanest government in my lifetime. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

smaller ships could be built up along the Mississippi, as easily as up the Columbia. But that would be something for when the main yards on the Atlantic are swamped in production and there is enough know-how to spawn new centers.
