Axios: Trump has ramped up self-deportation.
President Trump's controversial "self-deportation" program, which pays unauthorized immigrants to leave the U.S., is on pace to account for more than 200,000 departures, according to internal data shared with Axios.How is it "controversial" to pay illegal aliens to voluntarily leave the country? It's only controversial if you are devoted to the idea that all foreigners not only have a right to be present in America, but must be encouraged to exercise this non-existent right. For the voting.
The New York Times complains that the US is, get this, turning away foreigners just for having expired -- void -- visas. You know, like the law says is supposed to happen!
Why it matters: Launched last year alongside a multimillion-dollar ad campaign, the initiative is virtually the only carrot in an aggressive immigration crackdown that has been long on sticks. Through July 16, the nearly $600 million program -- dubbed Project Homecoming by the Department of Homeland Security -- has helped about 132,000 people exit the U.S. Roughly 70,000 more have signed up and are on track to leave, according to the data. About half of the self-deportations have involved immigrants held in detention, under an effort that accelerated the departures and began when a DOGE staffer brought Project Homecoming into ICE facilities. The big picture: The self-deportation program is a key part of the administration's push to remove 1 million unauthorized immigrants from the U.S. each year. The idea was that unauthorized immigrants would be so fearful of being arrested and detained by ICE or Customs and Border Protection that they'd voluntarily leave the U.S., with the promise of free travel and a stipend of $1,000, paid once they had left. The stipend has increased to $2,600 and was briefly $3,000 last Christmas. Border czar Tom Homan said in May that encouraging self-deportations was "part of the plan from the very beginning."

Zoom in: Project Homecoming started slowly, attracting about 24,000 immigrants in its first six months as staffers arranged deportees' travel documents and flights out of the U.S. The White House then pressured DHS officials to move faster. "The push was daily calls from the White House and weekly principal level calls [with Deputy White House Chief of Staff] Stephen Miller directly," one source said. "They wanted like thousands pushed through on a daily basis, and we were putting through like dozens." ... Case managers for the self-deportation program are now in 40 ICE detention sites, and about half of its 200,000-plus cases have involved immigrants in detention. People in detention opting to leave the U.S. through the initiative now spend an average of 17 days in detention detained compared the typical 50 days, according to ICE data. That's begun to free up bed space in some detention centers.
... "For the first time, someone walks in and goes, 'Hey, who here just wants to go home?' And everybody's like, 'I want to go home,'" one source said. "It's an immediate jump" in detainees seeking deportation. By the numbers: Each self-deportation is costing the government about $2,500, plus the stipend paid to the deportee, DHS says. Removing an immigrant who doesn't volunteer for deportation costs about $18,245, the agency said.

I am not an immigration lawyer, but I imagine that holders of an expired visa have a clear path to renew their visa. That means they're not in limbo.

This is complete bullshit. Once your visa expires, that's it -- it's over. It's like an expired driver's license. There's no "legal limbo" about whether you can still drive. You fucking can't.
At one time, when foreigners took US immigration rules seriously, they would never overstay a visa, even one that would be renewed. Because if they did, and they were caught, they would never get another visa again.
I knew a lot of foreigners -- mostly from Asia -- who were here on legal visas (mostly for work or school) and wanted to eventually get a green card. They would fly back home rather than risk overstaying even a day. From home, they would get the visa renewed, and come back to USA. There was no "legal limbo" horseshit.

A LOT less. It costs a lot of money per day to keep people detained--facility, guards, medical care, risk of anchor babies, etc. etc.
And then you have the legal costs of the deportation process--best to just pay them and kick them out voluntarily.
We cannot let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Because as the numbers continue to drop, so does any support system for illegals to stay.

I was a student in Indonesia, and their visa office was so slow that I finally got my student visa extension when I had about one month left in my studies.

Sure, some visas are renewable, but it's often not easy -- sometimes you have to go through your home country -- that begs the question of what your status is when they expire before they are renewed.
There are also provisions for asking for a temporary "stay" of deportation while you are applying for a renewal.
Anyone caught with an over-stayed visa and no stay in place pending renewal is a dirty fucker and can go fuck right off.
There's no "legal limbo" in this case. You can limbo the fuck outta my country if they expire.

I think these stats are for illegals taking the $2600 deal to formally and voluntarily deport themselves. That's a formal process where they sign waivers and get checks. We should -- should -- have very accurate stats on this.
The much bigger number of "self deportations" are illegals who just decide it ain't worth it to stay, and just leave. We have little data on that. I've seen some very big numbers tossed around. Do I believe them? Let's just say I'm skeptical.

I think for some, that live in blue sanctuary states, a lot has not changed and perhaps even illegal increased in their area due to fleeing areas where ICE is welcomed and supported by local and state governments. When I see the nics that claim nothing is happening, almost all of them in the past have admitted to living in blue states.
If the Democrats run your state or even localities like Nashville, they try every single means to keep even criminal illegals in the US--drop criminal charges, ignore benefit laws restricting those to US citizens, or even in some cases, like Houston, trying to illegally pay immigration attorneys for illegals using public money.
This is a Democrat political system desperately trying to prevent imminent loss of population, money, and political power. Essentially a war without a formal declaration or much shooting yet.

The secret that apparently no one knows about immigration enforcement is that DHS does, at best, half of the arrests. It's probably less.
The majority is done by local cops with 287g agreements who find out legal status upon a standard interaction, arrest them, call ICE, and wait for some DHS personnel to show up.
Texas is heavily invested in the system and represent the largest plurality of deportations in the nation.
The entire west coast have state laws barring local cops from entering these agreements.

Then when it became an issue it sudden dropped to 11 million based on some BS studies using no hard data to come up with a politically acceptable number. It has even been reported at 11 million even after Biden allowed in another 10-12 million.
Actual number can be no less than 40 million based on US demographics

ICE is very active in CA, but it's more localized. They have yuge detention centers there. ICE is most active in southern CA. Not so much in the North.
While ICE cleaning out the fetid trash in CA isn't making a lot of national headlines, it certainly is locally. There's endless mewling and caterwauling in CA about how ICE is grabbing poor aspiring Mensa candidates off the streets.

I strongly suspect that the lack of immigration national news since Goode and Pretti were two fold.
The first was the the Bovino and Noem show did end. Mullin took a different tact and there were fewer convoys. Smaller teams going in and doing the work.
The other is that the issue probably didn't actually focus group that well. White leftists making asses of themselves (which hasn't stopped, just the national coverage of it) just played poorly, so the media found another squirrel to focus on.

I thought it was the other way around, and it's a three-carrot scheme, where in addition to cash and transportation, they also remain eligible for future legal entry (unlike if they're forcibly deported). They just have to go through the formal (potentially years-long) process, applying for entry from outside the country and waiting for permission like a normal person.
Maybe I just assumed based on what I thought would make sense, but that's what I thought I remembered reading somewhere.

I thought it was the other way around, and it's a three-carrot scheme, where in addition to cash and transportation, they also remain eligible for future legal entry (unlike if they're forcibly deported). They just have to go through the formal (potentially years-long) process, applying for entry from outside the country and waiting for permission like a normal person.
Maybe I just assumed based on what I thought would make sense, but that's what I thought I remembered reading somewhere.

Yup, California is, indeed, a current priority of ICE. They have eight large detention centers (the latest opened a couple months ago), and have thousands of individuals being held at those locations.

The BIG picture of the cost of ONE illegal in the state of CA annually is roughly $7K. That's what is admitted Free everything from healthcare to housing...all illegal. Illegal Medicaid dollars spent, and probably more than reported plus their illegal vote.
House Budget Committe states CA totals of illegals are $30 billion by taxpayers.
Healthcare: $8.4 billion. Education: $3.4 billion. Policing/court/jail: $4.4 billion. In ONE State.
This money does not include the Nick Shirley discovered fraud of illegals that climbs to hundreds of millions.
In my opinion $3k is NOTHING to get them out of here!
