Even AI, which is a very risky bet at this point, would not need anywhere near the capacity that THIRD PARTY vendors are building in these data centers.
So... as nothing is slow now, why the Yuge need for increase in capacity, being funded by third party capital?
Only thing I can think of for that amount of capacity, is things like the need to be able to parse things like the Flock Cameras... and of course, going to virtual money (which, we already pretty much have).

My new cat Chloe seems to be adjusting well to her new environment. She took a nap in a cat bed in my library today.

When we lived in SC the neighbors across the street had a beautiful magnolia tree in their front yard. It was the largest one we had ever seen.
Their kids came over one day and told us their mom was going to have it removed because she could not see everything on her Ring camera. The street was not a thru street.
She had an estimate for the removal and it was costly so she had her husband out on a ladder cutting off the branches. He butchered it.
Mostly old people like us living there, lol. We all laughed about how exciting it was for her watching old people.

Private equity [think Romney's Bane Capital as a model] is buying up businesses like orthodontists and bowling alleys because the investment companies can make money from borrowing low and buying real companies that they can strip money out of. Data centers are very similar, but they also bring in stockholder money as well.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays I think we are doomed, the rest of the week I hope there is an escape.

Somebody has to answer the customer support line. Its either AI or "Bobby" from a village near Bangalore.
I work with AI planning agents for about 80% of my day and have replaced teams of a dozen or so Indians. Even with some of the going off the reservation that GPT 5.4 will do, the product is far better than the low craftsmanship slop that was generated by contractors.
That said, most work can be done by simpler models that can be hosted on-prem. Once the novelty wears off and people realize that we don't need even a fraction of the generative AI that is LLMs there ought to be a slackening. Also, China is lapping the world in commodity LLM work. Not yet in the frontier tier, but soon will be if the pace of the IP theft and government involvement continues.

And speaking of that, we did have some severe thunderboomers in the forecast area. I didn't get any right here. Asheville, where our own Mike Hammer is at, had a tornado warning. Radar showed rotation, and there were some funnel cloud pictures from cell phones in the area. Don't know if there was any touchdowns or not.

There are some arguments out there that releasing Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac from receivership will cut a lot of the outright fraud out of the home financing, and lower actual costs because of it. It may also exclude commercial investors from the market since that finance system was set up to help individual home buyers, not corporations that want to buy homes for re-renting. It may also exclude enabling home loans to H1B and illegals who apparently have less stringent FATCA obligations from normie citizens.
There is another school that thinks that the financing of homes is one of the things that holds the interest rates to reasonable rates.

Traffic cameras are operated by third parties. The Constitution dictates that you have a right to face your accuser in court. Most don’t want the hassle, but go to court. You will find that you have no accuser to face. Generally, case dismissed. Unless there has been some subversive law passed, that allows video (erroneous, I’d always contend!) that allows the camera as a proxy to a live, law enforcement individual who witnessed the infraction.

xcancel > x also because you can full-screen without starting the video.

It would make for an interesting court case. The plate itself would not be covered, or altered in any way, and would remain human-readable. And if the lasers did indeed render the plate unreadable by the nazi camera, how will the nazis know who to charge. The plate is the only ID for which a record exists.

We live on a deadend street with only 5 houses. It is a very small rural town.
Four of the houses have the Ring cameras. We don't.
WTH are they looking at?
I get that the Ring thing is useful if you live in a bad area. Are people so bored they monitor those things?

Even AI, which is a very risky bet at this point, would not need anywhere near the capacity that THIRD PARTY vendors are building in these data centers.
So... as nothing is slow now, why the Yuge need for increase in capacity, being funded by third party capital?
Only thing I can think of for that amount of capacity, is things like the need to be able to parse things like the Flock Cameras... and of course, going to virtual money (which, we already pretty much have).

I believe you can set Ring cameras not to be networked; off line only, video goes to a hard drive, not the cloud. If not Ring then some other brand.

Not really. Some of the more celebrated examples of Flock finding a bad guy (like serial murderers and bank robbers) came only from a description of the vehicle.
Most people don't record license plates. So LEOs queried the system on a description of the car and soon there were hits on the vehicle.
Cops just make a pretext stop, ask questions until they get PC, then arrests are made. Flock doesn't even have to be mentioned in court.

I can't see the dog in the summer due to trees. I can hear his stupid bark, however. I have heard of some thing you can put in the tree and when he barks it hurts his ears or trains him to shut up. It's been years ago since I saw this and would climb a tree if it worked.
I'd rather use the slingshot for the owners but this dog is a mess. Maybe Animal Control kidnapped him today since it was hot. I can have hope.
Stupid people. I'd prefer to put something in the tree to hurt their ears.

Not paying for a subscription means that you are the only one not able to access past videos. The AI is pretty good. For example, it will report "Man with red pail watering plants around the porch".
Even if you aren't paying a subscription, your cameras will be used to find lost kids, or track a porch pirate's escape route.

Well, I, for one, would never buy/lease a surveillance camera system that did not give me 100% exclusive control over the videos captured by it. If there might be useful information in my records for a criminal investigation/lost child, whatever, I would release such video as might prove useful to that case. No sign that the bladder cancer is coming back. Scoping and microscopic pathology both came back clean. I'll see the urologist later in the week, perhaps to go on a yearly schedule for scoping rather than every three months.
Heart ultrasound also came back good. Mild valve "regurgitation" which may be the cause of the "heart murmur" I've had for many years. Good enough that I won't need another ultrasound for 3-5 years, and will go to yearly visits with the cardiologist.

They have to be able to *intake and sort* the data into what is valuable or worthy of attention - and what goes into which category - and guess what we have been there for quite some time. AI is now doing it not just for text it reads or words it hears but for images and video it sees.

This sounds a lot like a gig I landed a few moons back. I worked for an AV company that was RIFfing a lot of my colleagues. The danger behind AI is like the danger behind most other things - how reprehensible humans will use the technology for their own nefarious ends, and to the detriment of the world.
I am immediately skeptical of any AI purveyors (not people like us shooting the shit but those like Zuckerberg and the like) who talk of the grand dangers of AI becoming self-aware and evil - they are projecting their own nature onto something that does not exist.
Maybe it's not a conscious thing... or maybe... they want us to believe *that* is where the danger of AI lies. In AI itself. When the reality is far more mundane and roughly a billion times as frightening. They are the danger.

Drone warfare (thanks Ukraine) is "progressing" rapidly. It's only a matter of time before "AI" in the drones will be making the autonomous decisions on when and where to pull the trigger and kill people.
