FUNdamentals

This is what focus looks like

I preach a lot about fundamentals. Mostly the mechanical shooting fundamentals of stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger manipulation. To become a successful competitive shooter you need to add grit, determination, seemingly endless practice and the will to never quit. Those who have attended a TXMoMe have probably met lin-duh's spawn, appropriately named Spawn and maybe even seen her shoot on the ranges. I can tell you from years of experience in evaluating shooters that Spawn has skills.

Here is what lin-duh had to say about her recent trip to the National Matches.

Here is a picture of the spawn shooting her rimfire iron rifle at Nationals. Despite all the team drama this year she did well individually. This is the first year she won anything and it was all HOA awards. The second place RPO is the one she wanted the most and had the biggest field of competitors.

Cigar of the Week

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the La Palina No. 4

La Palina is an old name in cigars, and one of the more interesting ones. It's an American company, not Cuban, Nicaraguan, or Dominican, and always has been. Founded at the end of the 19th century in Chicago by a Ukrainian immigrant, it was a victim of the Depression. It was revived in the early 2000s by the founder's grandson - who, interestingly, was the son of one of the big kahunas of broadcast TV (and radio before that), William S. Paley, of CBS. That grandson revived the company and brand, and now its managed by 2 cigar industry veterans. All of that to introduce a fairly ordinary cigar, the La Palina No. 4. Ordinary, but well made, tasty - and inexpensive. I happened upon a deal, $57/box, recently, and here we are.
The No. 4 is a Nicaraguan puro except for the Ecuadorean binder. Wrapper from Jalapa, fillers from there and two of the other major growing regions, Condega and Esteli. Construction is solid, draw is perfect. Reviews and marketing talk of cocoa and sweetness, for me there's more citrusy tang, slightly sweet wood, and some spice here and there. At under $3/stick for a long-filler cigar, this one's suitable for a yardwork cigar (or sorting brass, or cleaning guns), but it's nice enough that for now it's in my regular rotation. Normal price isn't much more painful, just shy of $4 each. So, a solid candidate if you're looking for good quality at a bundle cigar price.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

14 Hornady bullets. Several years back one of my coworkers called me over. "You gotta see this!" he said. "Here's a Youtube video from Hornady about how they are putting tiny cameras in the tips of bullets so you can see where they are hitting the target!"

Sure enough, the video was of a bullet's-eye view as it rushed downrange and into the paper.

I felt kind of bad about it when I pointed out to him that the issue date on the video was April First.

20 I haven't been to the range yet as I have my six month appraisal from the neurosurgeon about the surgery success this coming week. But, I have went through, categorized spare parts, and ironically found some screws that fit an ancient Parker Hales screw mount so the Parker Hale scope rail could be attached the mount. I was looking at having to pay about $25 bucks for imported screws from Britain as these are BA--British Association std. which doesn't match any domestic sources, metric, or even old British standards.

Turns out I had some spare Lee Enfield BA 4 screws for the front sight guard that fit perfectly. Some kind soul had listed all the Lee Enfield screw specifications for ALL the Lee Enfield models which is how I knew what to look for.

So a 4x pistol scope in now mounted to a No. 4, Mk 1* Savage Lend Lease Lee Enfield. When I bought the barrelled receiver to restore, someone had locked the bolt into the slide by cocking it but then putting the safety on and firing it. Had to dissassemble the action to fix it. The No. 4 had been tapped on the left receiver wall for a scope--but which mount--took about fifteen years to find the mount and rail that fit.

22 Well, I got nothing this week.

I do not think I will be able to go shooting until near the end of August.
Between work, finding a new apartment, cleaning out the current apartment my weekends are not very free.
And I wonder when I do move to a new apartment what the neighbors will think of all the ammo cans I am bringing in. :-)

And on a non shooting related subject, I did get to see Rush at Madison Square Garden this past Thursday.

23 So, the Lee Enfield finally has the proper scope mounted on it with the proper screws--only took 15 years or so to get all the parts. Now to make sure that the scope is leveled, screws applied with loctite, and sighted in using a green laser @100 yards.

If you do have one of these old warhorse military types, pistol scopes are often the best because they have long eye relief and you are not going to be shooting 10 MOA at 1000 yards with them. 200-400 yards at most were the standard.

But you can have a lot of fun shooting them with reduced loads at about 100 yards if you are willing to shoot cast lead.

25 Congrats to Spawn!! I shot with her a couple of years ago at the TX MOME and she had skills then.

I did make it to the range this weekend. More as a fun shot than seriously working on fundamentals. We had different guns to try - I am mostly a S&W guy and he leans more to Sig. One thing that we did that was much harder than it looks is walking and firing toward the target. Definitely need more fundamentals!!

29 One of the challenges when an old military rifle has been drilled and tapped for mounts is figuring out exactly what mount was used, the proper screws, etc. I have another old Mauser 98k Oberndorf that was tapped for scope mount. I finally found via Brownell catalog that gave the distance between screws, the screw pitch and thread of the tapped hole etc. that a Warne scope mount would work. That took a bit of research as well.

Brownell catalogs and online are always useful for determining old sporting parts and standards including scope rings as long as most of it is domestic.

I forgot to mention above that I have Parker Hale HA3 scope rings of the proper size to go with the A29 scope mount and the BA-24 scope rail. The A29 uses BA 2 1/2 screws and the BA-24 uses BA 4 1/2 inch screws. Putting it down, just in case I forget, I can always look it back up here.

Not yet, in the process of looking for a new apartment. I have until mid October to move out of my current abode.

But I am hoping I find a place in the next two or three weeks and then work on moving.

Also, need to look up and see if I have to notify the police of my address change in regards to my handgun and rifle license.

The DMV MGC met up at the range even having to drive through heavy rainstorm to get there. But we are dedicated to practicing our Fundamentals so braved the weather. 6 of us so we took 3 lanes so I Could work with Ed. I am pretty set on buying the S&W Bodyguard 2 but can't try one out first. I decided to rent a gun in 380 just to get a feel for the different ammo. The guy at the range recommended a Glock 42 as it is similar in size to the Bodyguard. He also had Ruger but as I shoot Glocks rented the Glock.

39 Third accomplishment related to shooting this week is setting up for decommissioning a BUNCH of poorly reloaded ammo by my FIL. He was lonely and alone after my MIL died and spent his time spending money on reloading and never actually going out to shoot.

Problem was he lacked concentration and ability to shut out distractions like phone calls, etc. and thus his reloads were known for being dubious to start and he kept poor records of what powder, etc.

So I have to decommission about 10,000 or so rounds by pulling bullets, dumping powder, and salvaging the primed brass and bullets if I can.

To that end, I setup up a wall mount Frankford Arsenal Pile Driver, it uses inertial bullet pulling.

I have done collet bullet pulling with a press, also inertial with the various hammer types. The Pile Driver is made for mass bullet pulling as it has its own springloaded self contained puller that is mounted on a stud wall and makes a pretty loud racket as it slams home to a stop and pulls the bullet.

Going to give a helluva workout to my arms.

45 Nearly forgot, 4th accomplishment, applied some Glow-On phosphorescent paint to gun sights. If you shine a bright LED flashlight on them or even just ambient lighting, these will glow for a decent time after 10-20 minutes perhaps.

Useful for old firearms with dead tritium inserts or that only had three dot sights or long arms that never had them. The colors themselves are of bright hues not found in nature so they also function quite well in daylight hours to distinguish sights. A small bottle from Amazon will do a lot of sights. Runs under twenty bucks.

46 I have done no gub stuff apart from a little snap cap practice with the Sig - I got a brainstorm to try some of my old single vision glasses, as I can't focus on the front sight with my progressives. (It helped a bit. I might bring these glasses on the next range outing, whenever that may be. I am currently working a side gig plus commuting 45 minutes 3x per week and spending the rest of my free time working in the effing yard)

But I did get some good news re: the MoMe. Thanks to a change in my boss' plans, I can take off enough time to drive to TX instead of flying in.

53 Ed brought several others including a 32 and a 9 and I also had my G48 with Optic.
I could shoot the G42 fairly accurately right away. The iron sights almost identical to my G48, little recoil but had so,e trouble with the trigger pull. Shot the 32 and liked the trigger better but not much difference. I like the CC9 but it is too big to carry. Put another 25 rounds through the G42 getting better and more comfortable. I shot even better one handed. Either an optic it should be perfect. Ed also helped correct so,etching I was doing between shots that he,led tremendously. Nice having a personal RSA. Can't thank him enough. Feel confident about buying the gun now.

Not to mention, new guns usually have shipping grease and you really should clean all such firearm barrels and chambers before using them. Lube them too.

Most dangerous thing in my home ? My 12" Sliding Compound Mitre Saw. You can take an arm off with that thing even if you know what you're doing.

Since you have a big job ahead of you, and a relatively consistent bullet puller, there might be an opportunity for an experiment. Try pulling the bullets with the Pile Driver as is, and then pull a number of them after running the cartridges through a bullet seater that sets the bullets a bit deeper in the neck. 66 Got some sad but not unexpected news. Mike Beliveau, Duelist1954 on YT, passed away this week from pancreatic cancer. He had the grace to let his followers know what was happening and how he would handle it. He went out on his own terms. Prayers, of course, for his family. A lot of tributes have already been posted.

I've followed Mike's magazine articles and videos for years. His passing is a loss for the hobby, especially those who enjoy black powder shooting.

Wife and I would prefer that as well. We are not averse to long road trips. But, it will come down to PTO. Boise to Corsicana is a long haul, and must be multiplied by 2 for the round trip.

I do wood and light metal working off and on and yes, I have the even older Radial Saw which can actually switch axis, table saws, drill presses, etc.

A negative hook blade help prevent the blade crawling to you on radials or compound miters. Really should not use the blades for table saws on radial or compound miters because table saw blades have a positive hook to feed the material into the saw--don't want that with a radial or a compound miter.

The grease/oil in new firearms is designed as a preservative. It's not meant for lubrication. That's because the manufacturer has no idea how long that gun will sit on a distributor's or LGS's shelves before it goes home with someone. The last Colt Python (2020 edition) I bought was practically swimming in grease inside its plastic bag. I guess was worried that something would happen to that high end polish job on that revolver. Removing all that grease was a bit of a PITA. I had to throw that bag away because there was so much grease in it on the inside.

81 Since you have a big job ahead of you, and a relatively consistent bullet puller, there might be an opportunity for an experiment. Try pulling the bullets with the Pile Driver as is, and then pull a number of them after running the cartridges through a bullet seater that sets the bullets a bit deeper in the neck. Excellent idea. Some of these have been loaded over ten years ago. Mix of rifle, 44 Magnum, and other pistol bullets. Mainly 7.62x51, 30-06, and .223 in rifle, 44 Magnum, 38 Special, 9mm, and 45 ACP wadcutters.

The revolver rounds, I will probably have to pull with a collet on the press because of I dunno how much crimp he applied. Might have to do that on the 45 ACP, though I hope not (he used to shoot IDPA so he has several 50 caliber ammo cans filled with those).

Yep. Ironically you do NOT remove the bronze colored gunk inside a new glock slide. That is a compound that is designed to season the parts as it breaks down. From Glock, "The bronze-colored gunk found on a new Glock slide is a factory-applied copper-colored anti-seize lubricant. Glock explicitly states that this substance should not be removed, as it is designed to be burnished into the steel to provide long-term lubrication for the slide rails." aka Glock Fungus.

He's worthy of an Honorable Mention too. But he's got the guts to make a video about it and tell folks what he did wrong so it doesn't happen to someone else. I bet that would be an awesome road trip. I did Laramie to Corsicana twice and loved it. It's not as cool from upstate SC, but a good drive except for ATL. Only one Buc-ees on my route, though. On two occasions from here I have carpooled with GT morons which was a blast. Would love to do that again.

Never knew that about Glocks. Haven't bought any, though. The only Glock I have (Glock 19) was heavily modified by B&T to produce their Hush Puppy platform. I didn't see that copper colored gunk on my Hush Puppy, though.
