Exposure times for early photography were long compared to today. It was hard to maintain a smile that long so they seldom did. I've seen portraits where a metal brace was used to keep the head still. Aside from that, I wonder if smiling in a photo portrait back then was considered inappropriate.

It was distressing to see the level of compliance the general population exhibited. The compliance rate was high enough to allow TPTB to do a lot of damage. Fear is a powerful motivator. The media spent 6 months saying the virus could live for 12 days on a surface. It was a bioweapon so it was preposterous but somewhat believable.
People can be controlled through fear. The idea thar they can't scare people again with something else is unfortunately wishful thinking.
