Top Story

AMD has announced its new Zen 6 Epyc server CPUs and we know, if anything, less about them than we did before the announcement. (WCCFTech)

Here's the problem: Zen 6 is strongly rumoured to increase the core count per chiplet from 8 to 12, and increase the L3 cache and X3D cache per chiplet by 50% to match. Which means that the raw numbers of cores and cache do nothing to confirm or deny the 12 core rumour. It doesn't help that the announced mainstream products focused on 96 core models which would have the same numbers whether that's twelve 8-core chiplets or eight 12-core chiplets.

Until you get all the way down to the bottom of the chart for Socket SP8 processors and find the 8-core Epyc with 48MB of cache which rather hints that 12 core chiplets are not a lie.

Oh, also supported (officially) are PCIe Gen 6 - probably for servers only, and 12.8GHz MRDIMMs - also probably for servers only. And up to 16 memory channels per socket, which at 12.8GHz delivers close to three times the bandwidth of Epyc Zen 5.

Tech News

Ryzen 7 has been confirmed on track for 2028, bringing with it support for DDR6 memory and the new ACE instruction set for matrix operations. (WCCFTech)

There is no spoon. As far as I can see some bugger has nicked the entire cutlery draw.
There's also the "new" X199 embedded CPU which is AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with a much more convenient name and a power budget of 55W. (Tom's Hardware)

It's competing with Intel's Panther Lake laptops chips and is unsurprisingly faster, although I'm not sure it's possible to manufacture competitively.
Patreon has laid off 20% of its workforce. (Tech Crunch)

CEO Jack Conte blamed AI and not his own malicious incompetence.

Fen, the kitten sounds like a charmer. I recall bringing little Arizona home from the SPCA, and trying to enclose him with his food and litter box in the kitchen of our apartment by rigging up a cardboard shield in the doorway (it had no door). The next morning I woke to find a tiny bundle of red tabby fur buzzing on my pillow.

Big cat, as he grew to be, slept on my bed in one area of it or another pretty much his whole life.

Microslop lost the plot with versions 8.0 and beyond.

I don't see things getting any better unless they lose a LOT of market share and are honest with themselves about all the bad decisions the company has made in recent years.

58 No hard workout this morning. At nine-thirty Miss Linda and I will go to the nearby mall for a mid-length (say, thirty minutes') walk.

I tried to talk to the IRS yesterday about my long-errant refund check. Both of the numbers they give on their website bring you to an automated assistant, who even with my SSN, etc., "can't find" my refund. There seems to be no way to talk to an actual human without making an in-person appointment at the only office downtown. The website has a "refund tracker" feature which gave the same info. Today I'll try it again and enter my original refund amount instead of the amended one. Maybe I'll get a new response.

I'm rapidly coming to the point of saying "I guess I'll never see that check" and consider it found money if it ever does show up.

75 mornin yall. A customer called me earlier this week because their point of sale system would not boot. I went over there and unplugged the power supply for a few minutes and plugged it back in and it came up.

The dang thing is running Win 98 and has been continuously since about 2003. It never gets turned off. Kind of amazing it still works. I bet the inside of that thing is a horror show but I'm not going to look. I told them it's time to get a new POS system but I'm not going to provide it.

You buy from Amazon, you deserve the heartbreak. POS is an integrations business. The actual POS terminal's devices all have their own drivers and OPOS/UPOS which was the common device communications protocol hasn't been supported in nearly a decade except through crappy iterations of JavaOPOS.

The point being, POS doesn't just plug-in and magic occurs, there is a ton of integration work that the hardware software vendors have to work out and nearly 100% of that is outsourced to India because POS is a commodity item.

Haven't put anything on local HD in years. Have three fat WD's in the box. Right now hooked to two SanDisc externals, one for music and movies, the other for stuff. If the computer goes south I just plug the HD's into another one.

Works fine for as long as the wear items can be replaced spec-for-spec.

Now add a PIN Pad... with NFC. What does your encryption software look like and does it work with your vendor and payments processor? Adding a scale? A security scale? How about a money exchanger? If all you are doing is scanning UPC codes and printing receipts that works until it breaks. Anything more aggressive requires integration.

Printers themselves are all over the map in what they can do. simple, single receipt? OK. drawing a bar code? some can't do that. drawing a logo or something else - forget it. Do you want to do journaling? how wide is that receipt paper?

That is all they have been doing on the old system for about 25 years. The system they have does exactly what they want and they would not even consider replacing it if the computer wasn't dying. They would be happy to run it another 25 years. Like most people though, they don't want to change.
