And Nick Shirley Probes Another Huge Area for Fraud, Durable Medical Equipment
That's a really good point and very true.
If Team Trump's anti-fraud efforts sometimes look a bit all-over-the-map, that's because the map is so incredibly large. The feds spend over $7 billion a year, and fraudsters look to cash in on every dime; with Vice President JD Vance on point, the White House has organized a full-court press to fight back. One day this week, the Justice Department announced it had finally nabbed a fugitive Medicare fraudster on the lam since 2022, who allegedly stole more than half a billion dollars, even as Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Medicare-Medicaid czar Dr. Mehmet Oz froze over $1 billion in funding to California and Minnesota over apparent Medicaid fraud. About the same time, Scott Bessent's Treasury stopped $100 million in tax money going to dead people thanks to new verification procedures, while the IRS chief revealed that a recent scrub of the Social Security Number database found that one in 10 recipients were erroneously listed. That follows recent news of blatant adult-day-care scams in Queens and a drive to claw back $1 billion in COVID-era unemployment fraud that may still be nabbing $2 million a day in New York. Last month, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced charges against 455 people for $6.5 billion in health-care fraud. All this is robbery of the taxpayers and of the folks these government programs are supposed to help: That should outrage Republicans and Democrats alike. And politicians of both parties should be embarrassed that the crackdowns are only coming now, years after fraudsters notoriously made off with tens or even hundreds of billions in COVID-relief monies. Yes, some of the crackdown relies on new technology: Kennedy touted the use of AI, advanced analytics and "other cutting-edge tools" to ID suspicious Medicaid outlays. But much of it is just what Alexander Hamilton called "energy in the executive," meaning leadership from President Donald Trump and his top people.
For example, the FBI created a Most Wanted Fraudsters list, which has now nabbed three major suspects: Khalid Satary, the one captured this week, plus Herbert Kimble, who allegedly stole $1.2 billion in a Medicare telemedicine scheme, and Said Abdullahi Ereg, accused of fraud totaling $4.2 million in a child-nutrition program.Nick Shirley is now discovering another avenue of massive medical fraud, this one involving durable medical equipment, stuff like wheelchairs and CPAP machines and equipment like that which is supposed to last for months or years. It's a similar scam to all the others: "Enrolling" phantom patients up for supplies, billing the government for those supplies, and then, who knows, putting the equipment in a warehouse or more likely selling it on the street for pennies on the dollar. This wouldn't work... if anyone bothered checking these businesses and confirming that these were real patients. But they don't, because Democrats enable the fraud deliberately. It's how they fund their supporters who in turn donate back to Democrats and put money in bums' pockets for mail-in illegal "votes."

Pretty hot, for here. A lot depends on location (how close to the water, any intervening terrain). Breeze picks up later and makes the afternoons quite OK (in the shade). But the last year has been so ridiculous, even for here (week after month of perfect days), we're due for some good summer heat.

I doubt much of the equipment even gets purchased and resold. I bet most of it exists purely on paper.

I ran through this with a left leaning acquittance recently. He was complaining his hospital bill was high and he had actually itemized it and the costs for items were silly.
So I asked him...remember when you said heath care should be free for those that couldn't afford it? Yes...well how do you think the hospital makes up losing money giving services to those people. But I said the rich should pay! Well, you live in a multimillion dollar home and make 6 figures. You are the rich...so why aren't you happy? BECAUSE IT ISN'T FAIR
And I couldn't get him to budge....

Left unsaid was the fact that the taxpayer's USAID money wasn't going where it was supposed to anyway; it was going to support leftist politicians.

Good friend had actual neck/back injuries from work. His tales of being upsold and pushed to use more things he didn't need, at every turn, by the disability/rehab industrial complex, were jaw-dropping.
This pathetic collapsed state even had billboards (billboards!) years ago asking people to whistleblow on disability fraud. That's how bad even the (mostly) idiotic state guvamint recognized the problem is.
I'd ballpark guess that wasteful - or actually pernicious - expenditure on social welfare fraud, near-fraud such as that described above, and "environmental" and "safety" nonsense in the US, if summed up, would be in the top 10 economies of the world.

Someone also needs to look into this 'student driver' business. I swear, two out of five cars in NC have a 'student driver' sticker on it. It definitely has to be some kind of scam where people get 'paid' with grants and government funds to be a 'driving instructor.'

Pretty hot, for here. A lot depends on location (how close to the water, any intervening terrain). Breeze picks up later and makes the afternoons quite OK (in the shade). But the last year has been so ridiculous, even for here (week after month of perfect days), we're due for some good summer heat.

But in a lot of cases of fraud, the fraudsters know they are caught and don't even raise claims to try to reverse the cutoff of funds. Not necessarily. The problem with IC corruption is if they have some gig giving them cash, they cannot really move against independent operators without jeopardizing their own fraud. The IC tries to swim in a sea filled with other fraudsters and relies on that for cover. So not every fraudster, maybe not even a majority of them, are covers for the IC.
But, I do think all of them have Dem and some GOPe political connections like any other organized criminal does to ward off local and even state investigations.
You pay off the authorities is rule one to operate so they see no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil.

There's a vid out of one of the first new Bugatti Tourbillions pull that shit and almost take out an oncoming car. That woulda been a $5 million wreck.

Which is another problem: beginners think THEY are driving the car fast. They are not. The car is. Some of them don't figure this out until it's too late. The car can save you from bad driving ... until it can't.

I strongly support mandatory media vaccinations of whatever crap Big Pharma has cooked up. Let's make it a law that whatever they promote is what the proposers including politicians and Big Pharma executives have to do it first.
Then the rest of us can wait to see if it actually works. Waiting for perhaps a lifetime or so. Just to be sure that it works.

A story I heard from a guy that claimed to be an aid worker in Africa:
I made friends with one of the local young men. He was more interested in making a better life for himself then most and had saved up money from the jobs he had been working to buy the ingredients to bake bread.
His day as a baker he went to a busy spot in the village and started selling his bread and several people bought from him as they walked to work or whatever else they had to do.
Until one of the village elders saw him. The elder came over demanded to know what the young man was doing, told him he should be ashamed because there were hungry children in the village and took the remaining bread. Now I don't know if the elder really turned around and gave that bread to hungry kids that day but the village lost a source of income and food permanently.

Years ago I took a short vacation to a place in Maine that had a shrine for Rachel Carson...apparently she lived in the area for a long time.
Outside of that the hotel was nice and since we had good weather I decided to eat at their outdoor restaurant for dinner.
The food was good but served with a serious helping of...mosquitos. Which is really appropriate as I think about it
