Iran responded with its own threat: if you hit our power plants, we'll attack the energy infrastructure in Gulf states. But they've already been doing that.

Per Tousi TV, there were a lot of attacks throughout Iran last night, including multiple strikes on Tehran itself.

Russia may be providing targeting information to Iran, allowing them to strike targets they otherwise couldn't.

So Russia might be responsible for the deaths of servicemen and CIA officers.

Iranian drone attacks on CIA facilities in the Gulf have prompted US intelligence analysts to investigate whether Russia assisted by providing targeting information or advanced drone technology, say four people familiar with US intelligence.
These people, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss national security matters, say US intelligence officials have not yet reached firm conclusions about the possible Russian involvement in the attacks on CIA facilities. But they cite the strikes' effectiveness and apparent precision, as well as Russia's broader technical support for Iran, as possible evidence.
Reuters and other media have reported -- and US officials have acknowledged -- that Russia has provided targeting and other support for Iran in its strikes on US targets in the Gulf region generally, but the intelligence community's investigation of possible Russian involvement in supporting the CIA facility attacks has not been previously disclosed.
At least two CIA sites were struck in March, Reuters and other outlets have reported. One of the facilities was the CIA station in Saudi Arabia, which is located in the US embassy in Riyadh, and a separate site was located in eastern Iraq. Some of the sources said additional CIA sites had been hit, but they did not disclose details.

The War Powers deadline didn't matter because Trump had declared the first ceasefire when it came and he declared an end to hostilities while the negotiations were ongoing.

Iran eventually attacked again so it became a defensive act by Trump returning fire which isn't covered under War Powers any longer.

That's my understanding of that situation.

Again, that's the rationale we're kind of backed into using.

But I knew from the start the Republican Congress was going to leave Trump hanging. (And I don't like saying "know" when I'm just trying to predict something, but when I just can't get over a suspicion, it's close enough that I can use "know".)

If this blows everything up, it's not going to matter, even if Trump likely saved the world from a terrorist nuclear attack.

The longer it goes on, the lower the value of their one weapon - the strait and energy. Pipes are being built, supply lines are being adjusted.

If the US never got involved, and some countries in the region cooperated with Russia, Europe would have a hard time (economically, militarily and politically) stopping them.

Seriously, do you understand logistical constraints? Given the forces we were willing to commit, there was a limit to what could be run at a high operational tempo. Exceed that envelope and you lose capability and aircraft start to break.

If we are in a total war, things are very different. Trump did not want a general mobilization, which would happen against China. He wanted to maintain reserve forces.

So in addition to diplomatic and political advantages, he rested the force.

The on/off operational tempo is great for us and terrible for Iran. Our troops get to rest, cycle units in and out and Iran just sits there worrying that will will do something.

They also probably have minimal command and control, so some nut job will always fire a rocket even if the leadership (or what's left of it) wants things to stop.

Oh, and did anyone notice the Saudis have invoked their treaty with Pakistan? If Iran hits them again, Pakistan has to get involved. That's why Kuwait is getting hit.

It's not about days, its about sorties. Flight hours.

About the best, most reliable aircraft we have have only a 75% availability rate. Heavies are around 50 or less. The super-techy stuff even left.

So the more you use, the more than go down for maintenance. Calling a halt preserves the illusion that everything is just peachy while in fact we catch our breath.

The problem with Russia is that half the West liked the way things were because they profited from it (NATO, the Defense ind. complex, UN, EU,...) so they wanted to keep the old rivalry going.

What we needed to do was crush them. Humble them. Make them understand that they lost. Take their nukes, expose their crimes against their public, and humiliate them. OR, not do that and keep the cold war going, just with a weakened and still isolated Russia.

I think that was the post cold war battle. We took a wobbly wet approach of half appeasing, half enabling their KGB and oligarchs to regroup, and half taking some gains where our oligarchs felt they could profit. It was corrupt and dirty and resulted in this.
