Meet The PetMorons

Hiya KT,
This is our 15 year old girl Stinky, she is a long haired cream colored tabby. On June 5th, she got diagnosed with diabetes. It has been a long hard learning curve. Expensive food which she won't eat, had to switch to fancy feast. No dry food which doesn't bother her, but we have had to switch treats to freeze dried chicken and liver. They do freeze dried minnows but that was a hard no for both our cats. The dogs however, love the fish potato chips as I call them.
We tried a libre meter on her and she managed to bite and break it after only 20 hours, I included a picture. That was a bit of cash down the drain. I have been having to manually test her blood glucose by pricking her ear. She is getting used to it. She got a UTI as well which is typical for diabetic cats. She is not a fan of the bubble gum flavored antibiotics, if anyone in the horde is a drug manufacturer I definitely think there is a market for tuna flavored antibiotics.
All in all we are getting used to the new routine and giving shots twice a day. If anyone has any advice I would be happy to know what worked for them and their cat.

My daughter took her her boyfriend's dog Bronco for a walk this week. Heat index was 100. Typical for July temps in central Iowa (it's the humidity). Bronco understood the assignment.

Hello,
Meet Chloe, a 2-year-old purebred Bengal kitty.
Last week I received an urgent message from an Undercover Resistance Operative deep within the Worst State in the Union (TN, according to CNBC). She informed me that she had discovered a Bengal kitty who needed rescuing from the cruel, tyrannical master who smothered her with affection and abundant resources (he's actually a very nice man who wants the best for Chloe).
Watching the video smuggled out of enemy territory of a damsel in distress, I knew what I had to do.
I summoned my covert team of crack commando squirrels. Together, we made the long, harrowing trek across three states, dodging rogue drivers who think they are playing Spy Hunter, as well as penetrating the various layers of road construction hindering all attempts at infiltration.
We successfully found the gated fortress where our damsel in distress was being housed. Our Undercover Resistance Operative smuggled us in using the gate code she had cleverly wrangled from her employer, Chloe's owner.
She also helped us exfiltrate not only Chloe but also much of her necessary life support system (food, water, litterbox, etc.). Although caught in our exfiltration efforts, we managed to distract her owner with pleasant chit-chat about Chloe's life and needs. As I said, he's a very nice man but simply couldn't keep her anymore.
Once Chloe was loaded up in our getaway vehicle, my crack squad proceeded to exit the city of Nashville, Tennessee (the Worst State in the Union). Not even the twisty maze of complex roads, nor the ongoing road construction efforts could stop us from our task. Chloe's beautiful coat of fur allowed her to blend into the interior of her cat carrier, making it appear empty from a distance, in case we were stopped.
As soon as we crossed the Mississippi River into the St. Louis area, I breathed a huge sigh of relief, knowing that our mission was now successful. She will now grow up in the SEVENTH Worst State of the Union instead of the first.
Chloe is a beautiful, sweet kitty. I look forward to integrating her into my household. As I'm writing this message, Chloe is sleeping peacefully in my sunroom, exhausted from her long adventure.

5 Afternoon, pet folken! A bunch of handsome cats today!

On the "Mom Cat teaching her kittens to climb stairs" video: The gray tabby & white one, and the all-over red tabby, are clearly ahead of their siblings. I suspect they are going to be trouble for their humans.

Rusty, my boyhood tabby, lived with us in an apartment with stairs. I don't recall when he learned to traverse them. He would dash up as if sprinting, two steps at a time, but would come down only one step at a time. Smart of him.

Of my other cats, only big red Arizona lived with me in a townhouse with stairs. When we moved there he was already two years old, so he had no trouble navigating them.

8 Weekreekfarmgirl, my late Arizona, the part-Maine Coon*, developed diabetes at about the same age as your longhair. I was positive I'd never be able to give him injections. But his were subcutaneous; I didn't have to look for a vein. While he was eating I'd simply pinch up the loose skin between his shoulder blades and inject into that loop of skin. Done. Though like with yours, it had to be done every twelve hours.

He lived almost two years after his diagnosis, and it was a tumor behind one eye that got him at the end, so he was doing well on the insulin.

* Such is my conceit. No proof is available or ever was. Consult your local Maine Coon breeder for information.

9 While up in Ohio we had two young kitties that came around our Airbnb. One was obviously pregnant and the other obviously had kittens somewhere. They were super friendly so not feral. They were very young looking maybe 9 months or so. We wound up feeding them for the week we were there. They belong to the property.

14 Try the freeze dried tuna. There was a brand of freeze dried minnows that both cat and dog liked, but is no longer available. They don't care much for the one in stock, They like the tuna. And Ziwi makes some good products. It looks like kibble but is dehydrated

I'm amazed that my other kitties have adapted to her so quickly. Hexie and Kaylee spend a lot of time out in the sunroom with Chloe.

I've brought Chloe into the house several times and she is having fun exploring and finding the hiding spaces...

Yeah, I gave up on that a long time ago. They are biologically hardwired to seek high places, such as kitchen counters and tables. It's pointless trying to keep them off of those.

It sure is cute, and just wants to cuddle against my daughter's belly.

I believe it is too young to be adoptable by her (whew!), but we haven't yet heard back from our local rescue places.

30 Weekreekfarmgirl, Arizona also had to be on prescription food for his diabetes, one of the Hill's Science Diet preparations. $$, even in 1998-99, but worth it.

Big Chekov D. Siberian also required a prescription diet, but for him it was something like irritable bowel syndrome. Not exactly that; he tossed up his dinner or breakfast about twice a week as well, until I started him on the $$ Hill's stuff. That cleared him up at last.

He can't take Abner's place, but he can take some of the pain away, and he is loved for him, not a "replacement". We are both lucky.

Arizona "knew" that rule too. One day I left the apartment, then realized I'd left something and turned back. As I worked the key in the lock I heard something big and husky scramble off the kitchen counter inside, and walked in to find AZ sitting and washing a paw as if to say, "Who, me?"

35 Had a bit of a bad experience this week. Charlie the poodle got into a scuffle at dog park. I checked him over and did not see any blood or injury but he was obviously sore. A few days later, he was groomed and we found a large absess. We went to the vet and got some meds. He's about back to normal now.

38 Hi Wenda, I have a second cat that is quite the roly-poly herself. She only likes dry food and she likes to free feed so it has to be something that both cats can eat. Stinky mostly eats wet food which is preferable for diabetic cats but I found a few excellent dry foods for Moumou, my big girl. Young Again is a zero carb dry food that has actually been able to help a few diabetic cats go into remission. Wysong Epigen also has zero carbs. Both might be good for your girl. It seems expensive but I will say Moumou eats a lot less of the low carb food. Perhaps because the high protein dry is more filling and keeps her full for longer?Also the dehydrated protein cat treats are excellent for keeping down the carbs. Good luck with your fur baby.

Exactly. I had to divide AZ's meals into two small portions, the first one at, say, 6 am, and the second at 6:30. While he'd be eating that he got his shot.

He never passed on his chow, so no problem there.

44 I am also getting increased exercise from throwing the toys that look like little springs so that he can fetch them and bring them. I am thinking of developing exercise videos with the cat although I don't look like Jillian Michaels . Ha.

Oh, Stirling and Dagny could play with each other . . . but despite the fact she was really underage -- she hadn't even gone into heat yet! -- Stirling was already trying to put the moves on her. ("Hel-looo, bay-bee!" and "Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?") We had to separate them, one at Linda's and one at my place and swapping back and forth, until they were both altered.

Maine Coons tend to polydactyly. The story goes that the cats Hemingway knew and had in Key West often had that feature, and they bred true; that there are a higher percentage of polydactyls in Key West than elsewhere.

Arizona disliked other cats. He'd tolerate them in his territory, unhappily, and hiss at them when they came near. Of course he was none too fond of strange male human visitors, either.

Linda's Annabelle, the pure white shorthair she took in after Hurricane Katrina, was another cat-hater. She got her comeuppance one night when she tried hissing at my Tatiana in her own territory. Tatiana, who was actually a bit smaller than Annabelle, thrashed her soundly, chasing her into the living room where one of them broke a window blind, and sending the white cat to hide under the bed.

My cats Hexie and Penny are the same way. They HATE seeing another cat outside my windows (I get the occasional stray).

But when I brought Chloe into the house, they barely batted an eye. Some hissing, but that's as far as it's gone so far. Really strange.

62 17 Eromero, like you I disliked cats on kitchen counters, and fought with my felines for years. At last, confronted with the cleverness and persistence that was Marie-Antoinette the smart black cat, I gave up and said, "Easier to clean the counters than to try and keep cats off of them."

My cat self-taught to stay off the counters. I stack dishes rather precariously to dry, and when he jumped up, he inadvertently knocked the pile over, scaring the bejeses out of himself. He never went up there again.

My dog taught him to stay off the coffee table. She figured if she wasn't allowed, neither was he, so she would knock him off whenever he jumped up.

He had his own cat condo to climb, so he didn't miss those spots too much.

63 I got brother and sister kittehs so they would have each other when I'm not around. They were best friends for the first three years but started to go their own way after that. They like each other and occasionally clean each other but they sleep separately and don't play .

It all depends on personalities. When I brought stray Li'l Bit home when Rusty, the incumbent, was about nine, he hissed at her for a day or so. Then, suddenly, it was as if he realized, "This is a girl kitten!" (He'd been altered a while back.) He accepted her; they began to play and sleep together, and he yielded his favorite chair to her as well.

The bonding went both ways. When Rusty passed away about four years later, Mom said, Li'l Bit spent most of the day trotting around the apartment, upstairs and down, calling -- for him, we thought. And she was not a vocal cat at all.

68 The other odd thing in the personalities with Rusty and Li'l Bit: Since his kittenhood, Rusty had always been afraid of strangers who were older than I was. He was fine with my friends, but anybody older than me would make him vanish. After Li'l Bit arrived, suddenly he became the brave one who sat out in the open when strangers came, and she was the one (originally quite confident) who vanished.

Biff, she was given to us by someone who couldn't keep any of a litter of kittens. We took her because she looked like Mickel, our all time favorite cat. His picture has been on the Pet Thread before. Short answer, both Mickel and Minnifer look sort of the same though born 50 miles and 20 years apart. We have no idea of their lineages, Nebelung-wise.

72 We didn't know our rescue ginger, Scout, was diabetic until he started puberty and just failed to thrive. Lab tests later and he had high sugar and stomatitis. Twice daily insulin and as high protein wet as we can afford. The other two free feed on kibble and he does as well. He's now a healthy 12 pounder and plays/wrestles with his brothers even though the stomatitis took all but 3 teeth.
