Men sue hospital after DNA tests showed they were switched at birth 38 years ago

The families of two men who discovered through DNA tests that they were switched at birth 38 years ago are accusing a North Dakota hospital of robbing them of the lives they were supposed to lead.
Kyle Bylin discovered his birth family after taking an at-home test he chose randomly during a Christmas gift-exchange. That led to his biological aunt on a genealogy platform. Her nephew, Jeremy Morrison, then had his DNA tested. The results were irrefutable.
“That’s when my mind was just completely blown,” Bylin said. “We could have never imagined that it was an actual birth switch that occurred.”

DJ Doof - Supergroups Edition

Recognize that last video? Was a short-lived supergroup who only released a single album. GTR featuring Steve Howe from Yes and Steve Hackett from Genesis. Very 80s. Had a lot of promise. But they couldn't top or even replicate the minor success of that song.

The story of Genesis/Yes supergroup GTR’s When The Heart Rules The Mind

On the surface it was one of the world’s more fascinating supergroups – the combination of guitarists Steve Howe (Yes) and Steve Hackett (Genesis). But ultimately the project never got the chance to develop and fizzled out in a matter of months.
“The idea came from Steve Howe’s manager, Brian Lane,” explains Hackett. “Steve and I knew each, of course, and Brian thought our styles would be complementary.”
So GTR was born in 1985, with a line-up completed by vocalist Max Bacon, bassist Phil Spalding (who’d worked with Mike Oldfield) and drummer Jonathan Mover (briefly associated with Marillion), and the first song the guitarists worked on was to prove their biggest hit.
“We played each other some stuff we’d worked on separately,” Hackett says. “Steve had an idea for the instrumental opening for a song. I had a tune that we could add, so we started to construct When The Heart Rules The Mind.”

Although their self-titled debut album did well in America – making it to Number 11 – the band soon fell apart. “I thought we could have followed a similar path to Queen. But in the end, When The Heart Rules The Mind was our strongest song, and the whole thing was short-lived.”

29 I saw a very unusual Triple Play in a Banana Ball game a couple months ago-a 2-4 triple play. Bases loaded, no outs, batter hits a screaming low liner headed up the middle. 2nd baseman dove, made a great catch on the ground, he popped over to second to catch the runner off by a millisecond. The runner on third tagged up and was flying home, second baseman gets up, fires home and the runner is tagged out by an eyelash.
Supposedly hadn't been done in pro ball since 1889.

We've watched the first half of Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence based on a 1920 Edith Wharton novel. The mind reels at the thought of how Marty came to direct this when he is best known for gangster epics and "tough" films, but I'll say it's beautiful and well-lit (a rarity for modern movies). It's not fast-paced, it's not Die Hard, but it is well-acted.

The local CBS outlet's website lists our chance of rain tomorrow at 40%, but no real change in temps -- still 80-something overnight and 95 in the daytime -- though winds tomorrow are supposed to be from the north instead of the eternal southern ones. I doubt we are going to have any kind of storm disaster tomorrow.

A batter reached base on a throwing error, and was erased by a double play.

78 We saw a bear in the Grand Tetons today! It was a young-looking black bear by the road. I didn't stop, because I wasn't sure what the rules are outside of Yellowstone, and it was waaaay too close to the road for my comfort.

It was a gorgeous drive and we got caught in a thunderstorm that was hiding on the other side of a peak. That little squall made the temperature drop 30 degrees in 5 minutes! So Pookette got to experience quite a bit of mountain weather today.

85 I’m in area that has thousands of acres of forest service administered land. Lots of campsites for miles and miles.

Some folks showed up in two vehicles and set up shop, tents and such, within a stones throw. I don’t get it. It’s not illegal or anything. I don’t really care too much, but I don’t understand why anyone would do this. It’s not super common, but I’ve had it happen enough times to really question “what the fuck is wrong with you?” It’s not a one off.

When I lived up there we were the only state that held out and refused to recognize MLK day as a national holiday. For a few months every time someone from NH would have to drive to another state, like clockwork someone would see the NH plate and scratch the entire side of the car with their keys. Never failed. Happened to me at least six times in different states.

Does anyone remember the joke about the guy who was caught in a flood and several people came by to offer him a way off of his roof? He kept turning them away, saying, "God will provide". A couple of weeks ago I got a card in the mail telling me it was time to schedule my "routine" colonoscopy. I called the office, only to be told that since I had one done in November, 2024 (when getting Cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis), and since it said I didn't need to come back for 5 years, to just disregard that notification, as it was a technical oversight. I said okay, but then I mentioned it to my oncologist, thinking maybe the notification was a "sign" that something is going on inside my body (I feel fine). He said not to worry about it, so I left it at that. (Continued)

Yesterday, I received a phone call from the same office, telling me that I needed to schedule a colonoscopy. I thought that maybe my oncologist had decided to see what was going on. Turns out that nope, just someone not reading the notes from my recent phone call, doing routine diligence. Was told to ignore the phone call and come back in 2029 for my next colonoscopy.

So both of these were just "accounting" errors, but I can't help but think/feel as if maybe they are a "sign" (I don't usually believe in that sort of stuff) that God/the Universe is telling me that even though I don't have any symptoms, perhaps I need to get this checked out, just in case. I mean, I already have cancer; it is a very aggressive one that can metastasize into other parts of the body. If caught early it could be easily taken care of, rather than a year or two down the line, when it would be much more difficult to treat/deal with. (Continued)

What do you guys think? Am I crazy, or should I push to have a colonoscopy done? I don't know if insurance would pay for it, or how to approach my oncologist to request one for me - I don't think "the patient has a feeling about this" is going to fly as a justification to have one done.

One of the widows I walk with cooked bluebell's chicken recipe from the Deplorable Cookbook. That was after I use the FIFA final as an excuse to visit her and chat.

She is a skilled cook, and has profound man management skills to choose that cookbook and recipe. Still walking, not stalking. She is on the prowl, however. Dodging is getting more difficult.

I think you misunderstand what I am asking. After talking to the office the first time, I didn't think anything of it (although there was a niggling little voice in the back of my head....)

After getting the call yesterday, I am starting to wonder if the stars are aligning to tell me I might ought to go ahead and schedule a test, even though I am not scheduled for one right now 😂

My great-uncle was a very good looking and (so I heard and saw photos) charming man. He died very young but got around as 3 women with engagement rings showed up at his funeral at the same time. He was a train conductor in the South, with a port in every storm.

His father, my great-grandfather, was also a very handsome man. I have seen photos. His wife, Maggie, threw all of his clothing and belongings in the front yard and left him when she found a note from a lady friend in his jacket pocket in 1913. Five kids, the eldest was my grandmother, who took Maggie and siblings in to her home as a newlywed.

Maggie and husband never divorced. Everyone (including my father and aunt) thought she was a widow til he died in Louisiana after marrying again and having another daughter. My grandmother refused to go to his funeral, which was enlightening to my father and aunt.

There are family there who learned of us legals due to my mother doing genealogy and family trees. Surprise!

168 When our first was born, it was at home, and in fact I was the one to "catch" her. Spent the rest of the day walking around in a tired, merry daze.

Our second and third were twin boys. Born in a hospital, only ten minutes apart. Fraternals, they were and still are about as different as two brothers can be. The first of the two born was whisked away by the delivery room staff, and I was busy staying with Milady until the second was born, so it was not as warm and cuddly as our firstborn.

There was a brief time they were in the nursery, and I had to fret that they were properly tagged and identified. Years have convinced me they are both ours. But, still, there was that bit of concern about switching babies.

WOW! That's a long time for them to dick around. I retired three years ago and moved my 401(k) from The Standard, who managed the 401(k), to a rollover IRA at Vanguard. That took a couple of phone calls, a couple of signed forms, scanned and emailed back, and maybe a week or ten days total, from my first call to the money showing up at Vanguard.

With this type of cancer, chances are that I don't have 3 years left. Just wondering if I should "check and see" if something else is lurking inside - if so, maybe I would catch it early enough to do something about it to give me a better chance of being here longer.

Haven't see what others have answered, but I'd say, Teresa dear, you have had enough going on with your health, and your doc says don't worry about it, so don't go looking for (more) trouble.

The only real sign, I hope, is that medical bureaucracies' left hand don't know what their right hand is doing sometimes.

N.B. I am not a doctor, of course, and my advice is worth everything you've paid for it, less tax.

Fair enough.

I have been EXTREMELY fortunate that so far my cancer treatment has been relatively easy - very little nausea, and most of the side effects so far (knock on wood) have just been "annoying" (hair loss, nail issues, etc.).

204 I don't know about the mix up of baby boys but I'm guessing it was a tiny hospital screw up.

I worked as a neonatal RN for seven years and, having two of my own, the ID bracelets are put on baby and Mama within minutes of hatching.

No one could have swapped my first 10lb boy anyway because he attracted crowds as the largest in the nursery (his grandmother said).

He also was a furious and scary baby with hunger and no one would have kept him but his real parents, as he was super loud from his first breath.

A former classmate of mine was assigned to him. My mother and I walked down to the nursery to get him after I napped, and he was missing. Because he was waking the other babies being furious my friend said, he was put in an isolation room one shift. This is how bad he was.

Now they have bracelets that will send an alarm if baby has left the floor to alert for kidnapping. Now, too, newborns spend their time in their mother's room til discharge.

I don't think you're crazy, given your history. Maybe talk to your oncologist and see if you can get some kind of waiver to have it done sooner than normal. Or, maybe try for the poop-in-the-box test. Not as accurate, but pretty good, no prep required, and almost certainly less expensive.

TInFW, I looked up the cancer you mentioned and wanted to pass on a cancer story. My parents had a wonderful woman help them for a couple of years before they passed away in 2005&2007. We stayed close and sometime around 2012 she was diagnosed with a rare stomach carcinoma that couldn’t be excised but I never found out what the exact cancer was. The doctor at MDA gave her about 6 months to live at the time. She passed away on Halloween of last year, 13 years later. Her daughter had called me in the morning and said that I better get to her house because she was fading. I made it in time to see her and while she couldn’t speak, she knew I was there. (Here comes the lump in the throat). One of the last things I told her was that her story would keep inspiring people. So I hope this inspires you, if even for a tiny bit.

Interesting. They've just discovered an atmosphere around a rocky, super-earth type planet for the first time. It's LHS 1140 b, about 48 ly away, orbiting a red dwarf in the habitable zone. They don't know what the atmosphere is, but detected it via seeing helium escape.

Surface gravity of the thing would be about 1.8g.
