So I posted this earlier, shortly after we got home from my husband's colonoscopy -- it was bad news. A large tumor in the sigmoid colon, cancer. He has a CT for this Thursday to check for metastases. He sees the oncologist next Wednesday.
This has been a difficult year for us.
Good news is that God is in charge.
Also, he will start fenbendazole treatment on Thursday, the soonest we can get it from the compounding pharmacy here in town.
All prayers gratefully accepted. This hits hard. Last Thursday was our 49th wedding anniversary. We've been together since we were 16.

They can teach formal debate, rhetoric, and the classic logical fallacies that we literally hear fuckheads spewing daily. It is most definitely critical thinking. I’m going to take the opposite view.
Logic fallacies might be the most important thing we can teach our kids. Nobody can be an expert on every subject or even most subjects.
It has to do with the basics of knowledge. How do I determine something is true? Especially when some motherfucker is a professional liar, and has the full media and hollywood treatment behind him.

High schools and Colleges don’t like teaching formal debate, the art of rhetoric, and logical fallacies any longer.
There’s a reason for that. They don’t want people to be able to reason and think for themselves. Might come to the wrong conclusion. Can’t have that.
We don’t all have the same brain power by any stretch, but we can maximize the one we have. Learning the deceptive practices unscrupulous people use is most valuable skill, and like most things we get better with practice

Turns out these were parts they didn't use and so they just cut off the parts and the bots were fine. The last part was making a robot bartender make an particular drink an ambassador liked by filming the motions of the bartenders tentacles at high speed and making the robot duplicate mimic this exactly.

Because I missed the morning data center thread...the data center debacle in Utah is a cluster eff. My small contribution:
Eff Kevin O'Leary. Actual small town farmers and locals I know in Box Elder County have legit questions: how building a data center the size of three manhattans in a rural desert, using more energy than the whole state uses in a year, might affect the great salt lake, their power and water bills, etc. And why their county commissioners agreed for taxpayers to subsidize this mofo. "Mr Wonderful" dismisses these wonderful, hard working people as a Chi-com psyop. More like Mr Blowhard.
Also, there is too much hand waving with the closed loop water systems, like it's a magic wand. Closed loop systems build up microbes and sediments, need toxic chemicals to clean, and occasionally be drained...like draining your water heater to remove the sediment buildup. So there is toxic waste water, in a desert. And where is that toxic residue going to go? They are buying up massive water shares in neighboring towns to supply the center's water, and I can tell you those shares will NOT be enough, and will suck those towns dry.
I'M PRO AI + PRO PEOPLE. We need a balance.

I have a couple of useless skills that directs me to my subconscious theory.
I can identify an Asian woman by just seeing only the back of her. It's my brain subconsciously putting together all of the individual indicators together .
Same with me overhearing just a small part of a conversation and my brain putting together all of the partial info including the tone , location , volume, current events, etc and knowing exactly what the conversation is about .

I don't like to use 'subconscious' because that gets into Freudian stuff. I agree that there are parts of the brain working on analysis beneath and besides your thinking voice part of the brain.
A few weeks ago I lost my keychain for part of a day. When I found it I was walking in the garage and suddenly looked straight down and found it. But even before I looked down I knew I had found it before I saw it. Some 'off side' vision part of the brain recognized it without me scanning for it.

Read about Jason Padgett sometime. He came out of a bar when a kid and was punched repeatedly in the head causing a massive concussion. However, the brain rerouted its regular protocol and transfered pathways to different parts of the brain as a way of self correction. From that point on, he became a math savant. He saw everything (and I mean everything) as math. Every inanimate object became a purposeful understandable design. Prior to those punches, he scored in the very lowest part of his class. The vast majority of people don't reason. Some - who are wrong - argue that the only thing humans do is act, and then rationalize their actions afterwards.
That's a totally false distillation but probably more useful than thinking reason is attainable for anything but the smallest cross section of humanity. If those projects had to include those considerations, it would highlight the true costs. The people who make bank on these projects are on the front end of the money pipeline. They will cash in before the project ever gets built or not. Make those considerations part of the deal and the project probably falls through.

The truth is - I can afford to Critical Think. Because I'm not living check to check. And as such ... I have room, and the luxury, to consider Cause and Effect even when it works against my own short term best interest.

I worked to get to a point where I didn't have to.
And I don't think I'm special. Everyone can do that. But most around me did not think that way.
