Startup Develops Micro-Drones Capable of Shooting Down Insects in Mid-Air

Engineers at Tornyol, an American startup backed by Y Combinator, have been working on an AI-powered micro-drone that could bring down the cost of mosquito eradication by 100 times. Swarms of these tiny drones could potentially hunt and shoot down mosquitoes in urban spaces, instead of using chemicals or other more expensive and hazardous population control solutions.
On July 14, Alex Toussaint, one of the founders of Tornyol, posted a video showing the company’s “first air-to-air kill”. In it, a small drone can be seen pursuing and ultimately shooting down a moth in a control test area. Obviously, a moth is not a mosquito, and the test area was very small, but this is apparently a very big step toward developing a drone capable of identifying and annihilating insects in mid-air.

49......Well, I'm back from Yosemite! The park was beautiful as always. I encourage anyone with the ability and opportunity to experience it to do so at least once. If you're able to get off the beaten path, even better.

We had a great time with extended family group ranging in age from mopey 19 yo to wheelchair bound 95 yo.

As far as FWPs there were a number of disappointments. I'll probably detail them in a longer screed but the parks lodging/food concessionaire is doing a very poor job. There was just systemic poor execution of basic responsibilities. Like no ice for days in the park stores. Telling occupants of the Curry Village cabins that quiet time starts at 10 PM while a raucous party was occurring in the nearby employee housing. There is much more but I'll save it for now.

The Houston summer series of dog shows is over. The Big Dummy was Best of Breed six times, got a Group 3 and looked very good each time.

Got to the 4:00 PM Mass at my local parish, so that's good. Five days of work as a steward left me footsore and exhausted.

62 I always kind of liked the colonial style motif on homes and all the accoutrements. With a cannon in the yard, natch. Contrary to Joey Biden public assertions to the contrary, Cannon are perfectly legal to own.

It is true Exploding shells are right out, but a Civil War smooth bore, good to go. I expect they have a voracious appetite for gunpowder, which is damnably expensive these days. And the neighbors get all pissy, so ya have to have plenty of room to fire. Perhaps a small swivel gun would be more appropriate to suburban living.

Publius - I download lots of books, esp. on the space program. Now some of them are really out there. The authors must have way, way too much time on their hands, we’re talking crazy stuff, going on for thousands of pages seems like. I just roll my eyes and delete.

Yeah, I familiar with some of that stuff. Most of it was from Richard C. Hoagland (Face on Mars guy) and a sidekick of his that came along later, Mike Bara. Art Bell had Hoagland on a lot back in the day, and I remember a lot of that.

Big Band music can be very good indeed. Of course there are many sub-wonderful big band tunes that were put out simply because Kaching! But when they are hot they are hot indeed. And Riders on the Storm is a well-crafted moody pop tune.

Nice. So glad y'all are having a good time. I miss Yellowstone. We are planning a trip for after Labor Day. The tourons become far less invasive, and the critters are at their peak. I worked at Canyon Lodge and Lake Hotel years ago, and the drop-off is noticeable.

The sad thing is, he's actually talented. His acoustic song at the halftime show showed he's no autotuned AI creature, he has a great voice. He broke out on YouTube as a kid for a reason.

Problem is, he's famous for his crashouts as much as his talent. He let the fame get to his head. A friend of mine worked at Disneyworld when he and Miley Cyrus visited, said they were beyond spoiled and a pain. He got sexually abused by Diddy and Usher, got into drugs, and got into a toxic codependent relationship with Selena Gomez.

He got messed up physically during covid and had to cancel his tour and owed his label millions in damages. He's finally separated from his toxic label, his wife helped his track back into Christianity and she sold a company for a billion, so they are not in debt from his label anymore. Can't tell if the Diddy news coming back spiraled him into drugs again. But he looked good today.

I think people would be surprised how smart many musicians are. Talent might be a gift from God but really great musicians aren't just banging away randomly. They understand music theory and how to reach people.

Even some of the stuff I don't like touches people in ways that goes beyond books. I don't get the attraction of Bieber or Madonna or a lot of others but millions around the globe do. That's not something dumb people can do.

The old 30s-40s BBs had some good stuff, but BB music has never really gone away. It no longer makes any economic sense (except for things like the subsidized Phillip Mortis Superband) and the advent of good amplification removed the practical reason (getting heard in the back of a big venue),which means that those Big Bands which come together occasionally are labors of love for the musicians.
It's still around.

They take the time to understand guitars, how to set them up, They can pick up a soldering iron by the right end, tweak their amplifiers, experiment with different effects. Eddie Van Halen wasn’t my favorite guitarist by any stretch, but he would run his amps by a Variac, a variable AC voltage transformer, he actually reduced the line voltage quite a bit, producing what he called the “brown sound”, probably increased distortion due to voltage sag on the tube plates and filaments.

Just reading more about Gunter Wendt. His German, uh precision and all that was indeed the right stuff for that job. He went up against the NASA honchos a few times, and always won.

With some shuffling around as was mentioned above, he didn't have the pad Fuhrer job during Apollo 1. Some wondered if things might have gone differently if he had been in charge. They asked him about that later, and he said he doubted it, and it was probably better he wasn't, because he would've taken that very hard.

237 I’m no Doctor, but Ivermectin cleans up a lot of stuff like IBS, undiagnosed parasites are awfully common, and very difficult to disgnose. There are a gazillion of them, and the initial symptoms are usually low fever, headache . If they don’t test for it specifically, they’ll never find it. In any case, if it’s not contraindicated for you, it cannot hurt anything and it may help. Mr. Ed’s Apple Flavored Pony Paste. You want two courses, spaced about ten days apart or so, to ensure eradication of any potential critters that have setup shop.

I found intermittent fasting really cleaned up my gut too. I like to drink black Tea. The only thing that causes trouble is eating junk food, particularly after a grocery run. I know better than to eat that crap, but once in a while…

The one I was looking at recently was discussing Clostridia Butyricum and the need to have lots of dietary fiber to occupy bacteria like that so it will leave the lining of the gut alone.

If this is interesting to you, look up Microbiome and whatever gut issue you have, and see what the research papers have to say. It requires some poking around and checking to see what might be useful.

250 Lowering carbs helped me for a couple years - probably the best I ever felt gut-wise and I don't think it was a coincidence. But recently even lowering carbs hasn't helped my symptoms so it was onto the big guns which I lovingly call a "cleanout".

According to the internet, which never lies, others in my boat have testified that it helps them too, and my doc who usually prescribes the prep for severely constipated patients said he has a few who do it for the same reason I do.

I'm fortunate that after my surgery in 2010 my Crohn's has mostly been well behaved. Stress exacerbates things but stress isn't the thing itself. I'm really hoping I get some relief this time because quality of life has been less than ideal - problem is it takes 7 to 10 days before I see the relief.

He helped with selecting a landing site on asteroid Bennu during the OSIRIS-REx mission. He was also working with the New Horizons team on the Pluto, and later Arrokoth flyby.

Only to a point. One thing I learned from 55 years of playing guitar is that different genres have certain structures, firewalls basically, that keep genres from incorporating too much, because if it incorporates too much it ceases to be the original genre and becomes something unique. Put too much rockabilly into country, and its no longer country. AC/DC is a good example. Its a very heavily blues based/influenced hard rock. It had sometimes touched very close to metal, but it was never true metal. The drums would have to change, Angus's lead style would have to change, so there's the structure that keeps AC/DC as AC/DC. If they changed the structure too much they would cease having their signature sound. Once you break down the walls of what defines a certain genre it ceases to be that genre. You can learn certain tricks of one genre, but then you have to find a way to incorporate them into another genre without changing it. Its a challenge.

Well, like I said above, you might learn tricks. My personal example is I'm a classically influenced metal guitar player. There is no blues influence in my playing whatsoever. There is classical, because classical and metal are somewhat strange bedfellows. We use a lot of the same scales. My classical guitar background only reinforced it, and I did the classical thing to improve the metal. The only side thing away from metal for me was early Rush, and the only thing I could take away from that was that huge cavernous sound Lifeson had. I was able to adapt that "thinking" to metal, but not the actual chords themselves much, because 99% of the time they wouldn't work because of the structure. I'm not that diverse. I focus on absorbing all the tricks I can use in what I do and really nothing else.
