Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Post-Vacation Edition? The week at the beach sure did go by quickly. Made it home yesterday with everyone I left with, so all good. I'll do my best to try thinking about working on my backlog of email this week. Promise!

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of gun pickin', that is.

In order to practice shooting fundamentals, you kinda need a gun. How do you decide which one is right for you? Guns come in a lot of shapes and sizes and of varying manufacturing quality, and one size or type definitely does not fit all. This guy ranks a bunch of specific models for reliability, which is high in the hierarchy of good things to look for. Longish, so you may want to save and watch later.

What do you think? What are your criteria when selecting a handgun besides reliability?

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

6 Going to try and hit the range this week. I am now 2 months post cataract surgery from both eyes and they have healed enough for me to learn how to shoot again. I had super cataracts and had to have both eyes scraped before they could do the cataract part. It will be a year next month when I first started the process and I haven't fire a single shot since then.

It is going to be different without corrective lenses.

11 Evening folks, not much to report, but in my travels last week (which prevented me from enjoying the thread last Sunday) I came upon a Glock 40 Gen 4 in 10mm.

There is a chance that this can come into my possession.

But, I have questions about the legality of the firearm which I do not want to go into detail on this thread.

18 At some point I hope to familiarize myself with the P7 M8’s distinctive manual of arms and empty some brass with it. Seem to recall seeing “124 grain ammo reco’d for this pistol” in a quick scan of the manual. I use 124s currently in my reloading so that’s a happy coincidence.

27 I saw that worst-to-best video come up on youTube the other day, and thought, "Ugh. Another guy telling me his high opinion of what is and isn't the bestest."

I did see it's about reliability and not just what he considers kewl. But, how much is reliability at play in modern firearms? Are we talking 99.99% versus 99.999%? Or, are we really talking about moving the ones digit?

Great scotch...disappointing cigar. This was my third Opus X in the last few years and they are way over hyped. And over priced.

32 Wait... less than a minute in and he goes from "every carry gun" to "13 carry guns"?! Dude, there's a LOT more than 13 carry guns out there, and I'm not even including SAA and that stuff. Heck, I didn't see any sort of derringer in the pics he flashed up real fast. And, yes, that's a legitimate carry gun for some situations. (And, as far as I know, absolutely reliable, regardless of ammunition.)

Load to NATO standards for 124gr. which is not quite +p but a bit hotter than domestic ammo. I have noticed most Euro pistols prefer hotter ammo that is typical in the US loadings in calibers like 380 ACP, 9mm, or 32 ACP.

Gas operated systems like certain amount of gas pressure to work from and can be picky outside of their issued ammo as the gas pressure curves may not match what it was designed for. .

Range report.

Had a rough week. Was going to bail on range time. MAE asked me to reconsider, so I put on a happy face and went.

It was so good to see and hug both him and LazyMessenger.

Mark brought a beautiful Turkish shotty. Shotguns make me giggle.

Shot the PPQ and the Ruger Mark IV for a hundred rounds. Cleared my head. Got me focused, even if for just a brief moment in time.

Go to the range. It’s good for you.

After a certain amount of money--the question is not reliability but the tradeoff between accuracy and reliability and how picky the pistola is about ammo. Rugers, for example, have a rep for just working and that is with most commonly bought ammo on the shelves but accuracy may not be top drawer. Smiths are kind of in the middle but again, not picky feeders for their mainline products. Colt 1911, at least the older ones, were also known to be reliable with most common ammo outside of wadcutters perhaps.

But go to a match chamber in semi auto pistols and you start to have a firearm that prefers and is picky about reliability on some ammunition in return for superior accuracy. These can be very accurate but unreliable when fed common range fodder of varying types.

43 And if you want extreme accuracy at modest cost, get a revolver--an old worn Model 10 Smith revolver that does not have any action problems or timing issues, can shoot to 1 inch groupings at 25 yards in a Ransom rest and still function quite well with whatever range ammo is available. A classic Colt in single action might even top the Smith if the mechanism is in good shape and both of those have actions designed in the 1890's and early 1900's.

Do NOT use unjacketed lead bullets in any P7 series pistol. The polygonal rifling will shave lead from the bullets. Those shavings will clog the gas port at the six o'clock position in the chamber. That gas port needs to be open in order for the pistol to operate.

This P7 was tested using NATO spec 9mm ammo. That's what it needs in order to do its best.

just skip all of the intro and go to the first gun thumbnail — for these reasons. It seems that there is a lot of introductory throat clearing in most videos.

What should be part of "The Filter" is shooting enjoyment. Weasel keeps telling us to train on The EDC, not shoot everything in your gun locker.

For 9mm shootability is still the Slovakian Grand Power with the twisting barrel — It has the recoil of a .380

The Walther PDP Compact seems attractive.

There are a few that I consider watching but I read a lot faster than I can distill from a video and there is a lot of repetition in videos in order to maximize your time on their content because that is how they get paid in part.

Mas Ayoob has recently been putting out shorts and a bit longer videos and he is always worth listening too. There are also some of classic trainers like Louis Awerbuck and others that have passed on but still have relevant information to give. Awerbuck in particular was a master with a shotgun and taught classes in it. Tom Givens (Rangemaster) is another former LEO that still teaches how to use shotguns. He was on a drug warrant team in Memphis to earn his trainer stripes.

62 Range Report! Range Report! Range Report!
Yes, I am excited to report that the DMV MGC managed to all get to the range today. It was soooo quiet, we got to shoot for a long time. Felt a little rusty after not having gone for a while, tried several different weights and brands of ammo til things started to click again. Shot both my Glocks, a 32 Ed brought and a lever action rifle Blaster brought.
Also still on the hunt for a carry gun and the range had a S&W Bodyguard 2 in stock that I could actually handle. This is what SEH carries. It is tiny, 2 1/2 in barrel, 380, and the grip is smaller than my G48. It now comes with a factory installed green dot priced at $599. Unfortunately they don;t have one to rent but I'm considering buying it anyway. The Glock is too big nd heavy and I don;tlike the 43x.

If I was limited to a single shot that had to be made with a handgun, I would pick a revolver. The main downside of a revolver to me is capacity and the reloading problem and that gets worse as your fingers and hands no longer are as agile as they once were.

If you can master a double action shooting style on a revolver, you don't need the super light triggers that so many think are essential on semi autos. And a single stage on a reputable revolver make is superior anyway to ANY semi auto including match grade models.

I just ask for a trigger to be smooth and not stack.

Haven’t used lead in 9mm for a long time so no issue there.

Actually have a box or 3 of NATO 9mm I will dig out to try alongside my reloads. This pistol will likely not be shot a lot, more of a curiosity I got for free. And I haven’t done even basic due diligence on the reloading side for it, unusual for me.

But will do so before shooting it much.

86 PI, got to handle it today. The one in stock did not have an optic but it felt good in my hand. It was very light so a little worried about recoil but having the opportunity to shoot a lot of different guns due to Ed's and Blaster"s generosity, I figure I could work out any issue by practicing fundamentals. First, he told us he's talking ONLY about reliability. Then his first reviewed handgun is a revolver (only one on the list) and it's a 5-shot. Which puts it at the worst possible position on the list. He says it's utterly reliable but it's just not enough rounds. So, how is that only about reliability? If it's utterly reliable, shouldn't it be at the top of the list?

Then, there's the pics.... I've caught several that look 'sketch', as my son would say. There are times he's talking about one gun and showing another gun entirely. It's especially obvious when he's showing a GI 1911 while talking about the Kimber Micro, and the price on the .45 isn't even close to the price he's mentioning on the Kimber. (Then there's the pic of the envelope on the scale when talking about the weight of the revolver. Eesh.)

He also mentioned match barrels. Ummm, we've talked here several times about NOT using match barrels on a carry weapon because of finickiness. (Yes, that's a word - I just made it one.) Seems a thumb on the scale as far as his judging.

107 Did get to the range. It's Summer, so I've switched my EDC to my church gun, a PSA Micro Dagger.

Very light, accurate, 15 round capacity with the right magazines...but I'll get back to that.

The trigger press is not the best, I won't lie, I have a bad habit of hitting low left with the tool. But it's something I can train around and that's what I do every Saturday. Draw+Fire drills just in case. It does have an optic mount, unlike Glock, without plates even.

But its not perfect.

But I had a catastrophic failure of one magazine. Worse, it's one of the very few 15 round mags I bought before WA locked down the joy of gun ownership. So I am hoping PSA will repair/replace it. Because I can't just buy another PSA magazine...

358 ft.-lb. muzzle energy. Remington's non NATO 9mm@124 gr is Muzzle Velocity 1110 fps
Muzzle Energy 339 ft lbs. So at least split the difference at 1150 fps and about 345 ft lbs. or higher.

You may or may not also find certain short stubby bullet profiles may or may not work like Hornady's XTP.

That is pretty rare--spring, follower, base, or was it the shell of the mag. The first two are easy repairs--PSA should have a follower or base as a part and my guess is Wolff has the mag spring to purchase. You might also try Ebay for parts as there are some people there with 3d printers that are printing quite a few mag and other parts for firearms.

If it was the feed lips, then that is a pain because while Brownell's sells (or sold) a tool to fix them, it is hit or miss whether it actually does it.

Beretta was aiming the PX4 as a polymer replacement for the older 92 model and aimed it specifically at law enforcement and military. It was also submitted for one of the Pentagon's JSP testing regimens.

It uses a rather unique rotating barrel system that reduces felt recoil as well. The 40 S&W feels like a 9mm in recoil for example. This is only for the service size or the compact, not the subcompact version which uses a tilting barrel because of size.

122 So...I bought a "tactical" bolt handle for my Savage target gun, because the bolt is just a bit stiff, and a longer handle will make it easier. And "tactical," because that makes it more accurate. Duh!

123 I picked up a Chinese-made clone of the Remington 870 pump shotgun, in "riot gun" configuration. I paid $140 before state sales tax.

After a few rounds of skeet, I pulled it from its shipping box, checked that the bore was not obstructed, and then ran five wimpy target loads and five rounds of buckshot through it. It worked okay, with the minor hiccups I expected from a new, un-cleaned, un-lubed pump gun.

I didn't shoot it more, as it was ungodly hot and I needed to get home.

Per month old news on the internet, RemArms, the current owner of the firearms line, is having financial problems with its new plant in Georgia. It may be a while before new, genuine Remington 870s are available.

Took my son shooting at the Beaver Dam Rock Pit Saturday morning. I like to get there early so it's not crowded. I've shot rarely for years, but now we're spending more time at it. We still have tons to learn. Improving is fun.

I made a complicated target stand last time. I was proud of it, but it was over-engineered.This time I just brought thin 2'x3' plywood sheets and made some 10-degree cuts halfway through bits of 2x4, and that was simpler, lighter, faster, and more sturdy.

We managed to hit the plywood at 150 yards, although the paper target was nearly unscathed.

We need a better way to get feedback. I think I'll get some of those reactive targets, and maybe a spotting scope. The rifle has a 9x scope, and I have a pair of small 6x binoculars. Actually I just remembered I have some big honking 15x astronomy binoculars. Maybe those would help? But they weigh a ton and my tripod is broken.

I have XD's in 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 ACP. The 45 ACP version has the rare thumb safety varient which is in the same place as a Browning High Power. And it is exceedingly accurate in 45. One that is comparable is the P90 Ruger which is also accurate.

One of the rare manufacturers that has kept the original XD line in operation in part because it is on the California list and they keep making newer variants of the original without changing the interior so it is the same pistol with different options--the Mod 3 and 4 have a removable plate for Red Dots, the Mod 2 had an improved grip, but all use the same mags and basic system.

145 XD9 was first gun I bought, still my only 9mm (except for the somewhat exotic P7 discussed above). Only issues in 10 years were a broken recoil stop pin (easily self-replaced, and free) several 10Ks rounds in, and a single mysterious reload case resizing error that jammed it up (classic solution of greater force eventually cleared it). So, very reliable. I know Mark loves his. I have the 5-in barrel version, vs. 4-in.

I've never fired or even handled the evolution of the line, such as the XDS or XDM, but have never heard a discouraging word about them either.

Originally picked the XD over the Glock because the grip angle suited me better. But a great, simple, reliable gun.

Haven't kept track, think the idiotic CA "roster" is finally (again) in legal jeopardy, which would make the whole line available here. But not too wound up about that aspect. The original XD line suits me just fine (and I don't use optics so that whole topic is moot).

This is the only place around here (Cedar Mill Oregon) I know, other than some expensive and not-as-close gun clubs.

I still haven't zero'ed the Mossberg Patriot 30-06 (the only gun with a scope). I've bore-sighted it indoors. The Rock Pit is probably the place to do it, although there is an elevation drop. I just learned how to measure distance using the MOA scope, so next time I'll try to set up a target at 100 yards (and some closer ones), but I don't know how to compensate for the drop.

To hit anything there with that gun I have to aim low about two ticks.

With one exception: apparent strikes near Tabriz. We'll see if those reports are accurate. One of the known issues with push feed rifles. There is a reason that a lot of old timey big game hunters used Mausers or pre 1964 Winchester Model 70's because the extractor claw grabs onto the round to put it into the chamber and then extract it. That is controlled feed.

So yes, a push feed rifle will feed more reliably if you work the bolt slower--a controlled feed doesn't care as it derived from a military action that allowed it to be treated rudely.

Occasionally it can also be an issue with mag lips and the strength of the mag spring. Sometimes moving to a stronger mag spring (see Wolff springs aka gunsprings dot com) if they have one for your model. Usually +5 or +10 percent stronger springs are available.

Get the service model and I think they also make a 5 inch longslide for it called the Tactical model. I have a 5 inch longslide for the XD-40 and it makes a difference in taming the sudden recoil impulse of the 440 S&W. Not as much of an issue with 45 ACP as it is a long impulse but it does put the XD-45 on par with a 1911 with a 5 inch barrel.

They also make a relatively rare XDS in 45 ACP WITH a 4 inch barrel. So you get a short concealable grip holding about six rounds with a service length slide.

Springfield Ordinance's owner did a Bill Ruger in the 00's where he was concerned about Illinois banning some of his firearms, from memory, it might have been the M1A they sell or something else.

Anyway, his lobbyists tried to put into the bill some language allowing Springfield's rifles to be sold but the nasty black gun could be banned. That hurt Springfield's rep and probably sales of its other firearms by people with long memories.

175 Late getting to the Gun Thread tonight. Picked up a new S&W M&P 2.0 9mm Compact Carry Comp. I have been to the range twice in the past couple of weeks. I like it - it is a fun gun to shoot. I am also using Ai (ChatGPT) to analyze my targets after the range and provide drills and to better my accuracy. It is working - slowly. I have more to overcome from old eyes and being left handed with right eye dominance. My have to look into a red dot to help with the aiming.
