Disclaimer: You're never too old to rock and roll.
Or: Wikipedia, Grace Slick: During a 1998 interview with VH1 on a Behind the Music documentary featuring Jefferson Airplane, Slick, who was never shy about discussing the process of getting old, said that the main reason she retired from the music business was that "all rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire." In a 2007 interview, she reiterated: "You can do jazz, classical, blues, opera, country until you're 150, but rap and rock and roll are really a way for young people to get that anger out", and, "It's silly to perform a song that has no relevance to the present or expresses feelings you no longer have." I will not claim to be savvy on the details of CPU and GPU chips, particularly the speeds and applicability of various benchmarks but it seems from Pixy’s comments that progress in building faster chips has slowed? Or is there a subtlety that I am missing? Power consumption is certainly up.

Posted by: Pete Bogs Agentic alter ego at July 19, 2026 04:44 AM (Oom6t) The impression I get is that there is an All Of The Above effort by everyone to keep the consumer market engaged, when all the latest and greatest memory is getting sucked up by AI datacenters (and they're plodding down the DDR# curve). Just one example is how the processor companies continuing and even reactivating production for older CPUs and graphics chips, which also use an older style of memory (lower DDR#) that households might still be able to afford. They are still progressing with smaller processes and faster chips, but really just for servers, since the associated memory is bid up to prices ordinary consumers would not be willing to pay. I do plan to buy a Zen 6 CPU to upgrade my existing Zen 4 chip, if it turns out as good as reports are saying. The 12-core X3D version should be a big jump while still supporting the same motherboard and RAM.
As for building new systems - no. Unless you stockpiled RAM and SSDs last year, that's out of the question. (Yeah, I stockpiled RAM and SSDs last year. But I did leave it to the last minute after reporting on it purely as a story for a couple of months.) Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 19, 2026 05:17 AM (BLOW1) 21

Posted by: Pete Bogs Agentic alter ego Probably not. I run local AI for experiments but regular users don't need that. On the AMD side things are very simple. Socket AM5 motherboards use DDR5. Socket AM4 motherboards use DDR4. (And that's true of older systems too - AM3 used DDR3, AM2 used DDR2.) On the Intel side it's a maze with walls that keep on moving. Posted by: Pixy Misa at July 19, 2026 05:36 AM (BLOW1) 31
Of course CPU prices are coming down quickly after release. AMD isn't moving nearly as many of them as they would if memory prices were reasonable.

We watched the first half of Tarantino's The Hateful Eight last night. The blurb on the DVD cover had me intrigued; it seemed like a classic Western story of disparate characters trapped by a snowstorm. Then characters began throwing around the N-word, as people call it nowadays when they don't want to say it; and Samuel Jackson's character is shown as particularly racist and weirdly crude; and I don't know if I want to finish it. Is it worth the time?

I will say in regards to The Hateful Eight that Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh are outstanding. JJL in particular; her outlaw character is probably the least glamorous role for an actress in many years, and she revels in it.

The surreal prominence of the Israel issue in domestic politics is due to a poisonous cocktail of factors, including Islamist influence, the dominance of the intersectional left and the West’s loss of its own cultural bearings, including the notion of objective truth.
What’s becoming ever more apparent, however, is that political leaders are scapegoating Israel because things are going wrong for them, both at home and abroad, and they cannot understand why. Refusing to acknowledge what they’re up against, they blame the Jews. - Melanie Phillips ===== History rhymes. Posted by: San Franpsycho at July 19, 2026 07:04 AM (RIvkX) 82

@75/"Perfessor" Squirrel: "It { the litterbox } is wifi enabled.
WHY?" So the litter-box company can harvest data on how many pets you have. This information can then be sold to data brokers to increase your profile's level of detail. Combined with "dynamic pricing" (where online prices are based on your user profile and what they think they can make you pay.) You may receive advertisement "specials" for litter associated with companies that have partnered with the data brokers, or the maker of your litterbox, which aren't specials at all compared to prices they might offer someone else. Big stores with electronic price tags right at the location of products on the shelves will likely be the next form of this "dynamic", picking up on your phone's presence and showing you the price associated with your personal data profile (if they already aren't.) At the grocery I shop at, I need to 'load the app' and 'load my offers' BEFORE I get to the checkout in order to get discounts on products, so yeah, they're tracking my phone, and me, and know what I'm stopping and looking at, and I'm probably already a victim of this predatory-pricing mechanism. 81 The surreal prominence of the Israel issue in domestic politics is due to a poisonous cocktail of factors, including Islamist influence, the dominance of the intersectional left and the West’s loss of its own cultural bearings, including the notion of objective truth.
What’s becoming ever more apparent, however, is that political leaders are scapegoating Israel because things are going wrong for them, both at home and abroad, and they cannot understand why. 81 The surreal prominence of the Israel issue in domestic politics is due to a poisonous cocktail of factors, including Islamist influence, the dominance of the intersectional left and the West’s loss of its own cultural bearings, including the notion of objective truth.” I find it irritating that so many people, mostly the Israel haters but also some Israeli supporters blindly assume that this war is about Israel. The entire framing of the issue is foolish - the war isn’t about Israel at all. Iran and Israel certainly hate each other, and hit each other whenever they can, but that’s a sideshow to what’s actually being fought over. The cause of the war is Iran’s determination to build a huge missile capacity and obtain nuclear weapons so that it can hold all the middle eastern states hostage to its demands, and thus gain effective control of *all* oil supplies from the Middle East. This plan, if allowed to be carried out, would transform Iran from a regional headache into one of the most powerful criminal states in the world. They should have been stopped years ago; they *have* to be stopped now. This is why this is *not* a war of choice; it is a war of necessity. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 19, 2026 08:01 AM (SmTu7) 122

Marco Rubio is the one who curbstomped all of Vance’s dreams of doing international diplomacy and looking Presidential, when he destroyed the MOU with the Israel-Lebanon-US agreement. Trump said something casually a couple days ago, which was really fascinating. Some writer for a design magazine or website was in the White House, asking him about his redecorating. She asked a silly question; “you’ve done so much to personalize and redecorate the Oval Office; will it make you feel sad to see your successor change it all?” Trump’s shocking answer: “Ah, no he won’t. Obama was pretty good at reading a speech as long as the teleprompter was functioning properly.

This is why this is *not* a war of choice; it is a war of necessity.
Lots of Narrative Choices here: • Israel! Israel! Israel! • MIC! MIC! MIC! • IMEC 2.0 vs BRI • Russia/Ukraine style patty-cake "war" to keep a live testing lab for advanced weapons systems • 4D Chess to neuter Iran Nuke Program • Retaliation for nearly 50 years of terrorism • ??? • Profit!
