- Nvidia's 5000 Super graphics cards are lined up on the runway ready to go as soon as someone breaks the news to the passengers that the price of their tickets just tripled. (Tom's Hardware)
Or less obliquely, the 3GB memory chips used for the Super models are three times the price of the standard 2GB chips.
Which is STUPID because the GPUs already support two banks of memory and Nvidia could more cheaply produce a 24GB RTX 5070 Super than an 18GB version.
AMD should make mainstream 24GB and 32GB cards just to mock their rivals.
- Speaking of AMD, the company launched its Ryzen 7700X3D CPU at a price of $329 last weak, making it something less than a bargain because the 7800X3D is available cheaper than that. (Tom's Hardware)

Worth pointing out the the previous generations 5800X3D runs to $349.

In fact, it stomps all over AMD's existing 12 core laptop chip. It's not even close. It comes in as 33% faster than the equivalent Zen 5 chip in multi-core tests, and 35% faster single-core.
Since I'm writing this on a Zen 3 system and the latest hardware I have is Zen 4, it looks like a pretty substantial jump.

I will not claim to be savvy on the details of CPU and GPU chips, particularly the speeds and applicability of various benchmarks but it seems from Pixy’s comments that progress in building faster chips has slowed? Or is there a subtlety that I am missing? Power consumption is certainly up.

The impression I get is that there is an All Of The Above effort by everyone to keep the consumer market engaged, when all the latest and greatest memory is getting sucked up by AI datacenters (and they're plodding down the DDR# curve). Just one example is how the processor companies continuing and even reactivating production for older CPUs and graphics chips, which also use an older style of memory (lower DDR#) that households might still be able to afford.
They are still progressing with smaller processes and faster chips, but really just for servers, since the associated memory is bid up to prices ordinary consumers would not be willing to pay.

I do plan to buy a Zen 6 CPU to upgrade my existing Zen 4 chip, if it turns out as good as reports are saying. The 12-core X3D version should be a big jump while still supporting the same motherboard and RAM.
As for building new systems - no. Unless you stockpiled RAM and SSDs last year, that's out of the question.

Next week starting to build a fence around the orchard. 8 feet high. I’ve concluded you can have a fence quickly or you can have it look good. Both are equally expensive. Hoping to get it in before the deer discover the trees again.

Probably not. I run local AI for experiments but regular users don't need that.
On the AMD side things are very simple. Socket AM5 motherboards use DDR5. Socket AM4 motherboards use DDR4. (And that's true of older systems too - AM3 used DDR3, AM2 used DDR2.)
On the Intel side it's a maze with walls that keep on moving.

Of course CPU prices are coming down quickly after release. AMD isn't moving nearly as many of them as they would if memory prices were reasonable.

G&R, the collateral damage reveals the long range goal. The memory shortage will hit phones and tablets such that consumers will only be able to rent them. As renters, they will not have full control of the software or surfing.

That’s a good idea. Not sure it’s big enough. I need an inexpensive e fence that I could move around the property so they could graze the checkerboard. We have several brushy areas so goats might be better.

On tech problems. Yesterday on long drive listened to podcast on my phone all the way. Got there and phone decided it didn't accept mobile data. Nothing was turned off and didn't get back on line until got home WiFi. Maybe if I coould restart it might have fixed it but I can't turn my phone off ond on. Its a non woking button issue.

We watched the first half of Tarantino's The Hateful Eight last night. The blurb on the DVD cover had me intrigued; it seemed like a classic Western story of disparate characters trapped by a snowstorm. Then characters began throwing around the N-word, as people call it nowadays when they don't want to say it; and Samuel Jackson's character is shown as particularly racist and weirdly crude; and I don't know if I want to finish it. Is it worth the time?

I will say in regards to The Hateful Eight that Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh are outstanding. JJL in particular; her outlaw character is probably the least glamorous role for an actress in many years, and she revels in it.

wi-fi, lol; needed a 12 volt lighting transformer a few weeks ago, only thing the big-box store had was an outdoor model with wi-fi and an app ... I could tell (by the weight) that there was a transformer in there so I bought it, brought it home, used the bandsaw to excise the wi-fi module; it worked like a champ!

I have one too, but the wifi is not enabled. My son wanted to enable it so that he didn't have to walk the 20 feet to the litter box to check it...laziness has no upper bound...

Late in the Prayer Thread this is what Brother Tim posted -- he really needs prayer, and what else, I don't know. But I know prayer is heard and answered.
Mornin' Horde. Black dog barkin' lately as he does when things get hard. Housing plan failed. Trying to find a better paying job I fit with has been frustrating. Same old same old, I guess.
Started asking the Lord not for relief, but release. Probably not a good sign.
Hope y'all are doing better than I.
