43 Watts’ Imagined Scene: Watts, who frequently drew on Old Testament themes for moral and allegorical purposes, invents an ending: the frail, exhausted Cain returns to Abel’s altar after years of wandering and offers himself as a sacrifice in repentance. A fiery angel descends under a stormy sky, sweeping away the dark clouds of the curse. Cain is forgiven and allowed to die in peace.

The composition captures the dramatic moment of absolution, with Cain’s twisted, weary form contrasted against the dynamic, flowing figure of the angel. Watts revised the work extensively (as seen in preparatory sketches), refining poses and drapery for maximum emotional intensity.

67 The painting is visually interesting on its own with the contrast between the dark man and wasteland against the power and light and life of the angel. Knowing the story of Cain and his repentance makes it more powerful. Not sure if the hint of a face in the upper left is God providing absolution or Cain as he ascends. Clearly, I need to reread Genesis. Also, I need to learn more about Watts and his works.

Probably not connected but the image reminds me of CS Lewis' description of the light and life Ransome felt once he was in outer space in "Out of the Silent Planet".

76 From bibilicalarchaeology.org, re Noah's wife:

According to the midrash known as Genesis Rabbah (c. 300–500 C.E.), a collection of ancient rabbinical interpretations of Genesis, she was Naamah, the daughter of Lamech and sister of Tubal-Cain (Genesis 4:22). Later midrash, such as the medieval Book of Jasher, seemingly uncomfortable with Noah’s wife being from the descendants of Cain, states she is Naamah the daughter of Enoch.

95 The death of Cain
George Frederick Watts

The Death of Cain is a major Symbolist painting by British artist George Frederic Watts, created between 1872 and 1875. It depicts an imagined conclusion to the biblical narrative where a weary, emaciated Cain returns to his brother Abel's altar, only to have his curse lifted by a fiery angel and be forgiven.

The large oil on canvas (measuring 2337 mm × 1575 mm) portrays themes of morality, mortality, and the human condition. In the scene, Cain has collapsed in despair, while a dramatic, stormy sky parts as a glowing angel descends to grant him peace in death. Watts gave the painting to the Royal Academy of Arts in 1886, where it currently resides.

He needed a good scrubbing, too, but at least he was forgiven.

Today's excuse: Too large to hang. But, Watts is an interesting artist as he became famous in his lifetime for his allegorical works, such as Hope and Love and Life. Thanks.

119 It occasionally gives me consolation as a parent that even God's kids and grandkids were colossal screw-ups.

About 2/3 of the OT turns out to be Almighty God bitching about kids nowadays, just like a Moron. We trespass on His turf.

In fiction, I need to have a protagonist I can root for. I have to want them to succeed. With Kane, I end up hoping he gets his ass kicked and gets humbled. I shouldn't be hoping the protagonist will fail but that's where I end up.
