Woman Drinks Diet Coke to Dissolve Huge Mass in Her Stomach

They say soda is bad for you, and that is probably right in most cases, but if you happen to have a stomach clogged with undigested food, it can apparently be a big help! A team of doctors from Massachusetts recently reported the unusual case of an elderly woman with a large benzoar in her stomach who managed to dissolve the large mass by drinking 1.5 liters of Diet Coke per day.
Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, the doctors reported that the patient had been experiencing a burning pain in her upper abdomen and right side of her torso for about a month when she finally came in for a checkup. She had tried two common over-the-counter medications for acid reflux, but they had no effect.

Because of her history of diabetes, the woman was prescribed diet soda, but because she didn’t enjoy carbonated drinks, the recommended 3 liters were cut down to just 1.5 liters per day. Still, the treatment proved remarkably effective! During her second day of treatment, the patient reported a “tugging” sensation in her stomach, after which her nausea and discomfort disappeared. A subsequent endoscopy confirmed that the benzoar had dissolved.

I've used Coca Cola to dissolve corrosion on car battery terminals. I'm not at all surprised at what cola / diet cola can do.

Speaking of music - how many of you have gotten back into listening to vinyl? I've been dabbling in it, but I need a good turntable (recommendations welcomed!) for my growing collection. Anyway, sometimes the old ways are good ways.

Never before in our industry has a format come back from the dead quite like vinyl

In case you hadn’t realised, vinyl is making a bit of a comeback. Who would have guessed that a plastic disc which first arrived on the scene in 1931 would still be bringing so much joy 95 years later?
Although a lot has changed in the world over that time, the format itself and the techniques used to create it haven’t evolved massively. So, is vinyl currently as good as it gets, or could it be improved upon?

Personal opinion - listening to music on vinyl is a great throwback experience. Warmth and imperfections take the listener back to a different era. For my tastes, I say listening to a CD with big-ass, over-the-ear headphones is the best for audio clarity. What say you?

Vinyl worked because its imperfections sound nice to humans. But you can just record those same imperfections into a digital format and have the same experience over and over without worrying about wearing out your albums, if that's what you want.

Yeah, per vinyl...the digital formats never really captured the nuances of a well kept album. I was always totally anal about keeping my albums in pristine condition. When my husband died some years ago, I started clearing out much clutter. In retrospect, I wish I didn't let go of so much vinyl 😞.

"Vinyl" in a sense may continue on far past the end of this planet. This came up a few nights ago on an ONT. While they're weren't vinyl, both Voyager probes contained phonograph records made of gold plated copper with sounds and video from earth, a "message in a bottle tossed in the interstellar ocean" as Billions and Billions Carl Sagan described it.

They even included a needle to play it back, and instructions on how to do so. Sagan and Frank Drake were pretty clever in how they encoded those instructions and the map of its point of origin in both space and time. They used the universal language of mathematics and the physical constants.

But it would make the clothing design sell better among the masses if they bothered to do things like match the colors to the model's skin tones better, or for example not make the blue dress so 'busy' with oversized gubbins. Agreed. Even with my newest hearing aids (and they are very good) if I want to hear every note and subtle harmony I use my Bose over the ear headset on a CD player. As much as I prefer physical media over streaming I never felt the pull to return to vinyl.

Regarding vinyl records, I still have most of mine from HS and college. Someone broke into my apt between moves and stole my turntable and some of my albums, and may he have plague fleas forever. We still have a lot and listen to them shooting pool. I would have to look at the type of turntable as no idea.

I have my grandmother's 100yr old mahogany Victrola Credenza in the LR. A brother of hers took out speakers? from the inside and that is storage shelving now, but it still plays from the top and I have the crank up handle. Also have a collection of her records: super thick plastic. Big band stuff or classical.

It would not surprise me to learn that there was a connection between Graham and the multitude of Defense Contractors, and his net worth is a lot higher than it should be. When I hear the term "Chicken Hawk", he's was always the first person that came to mind right up there with McCain.

His Conservative side only popped out in an election year for most of his career. Less so in the very recent past, but he was never shy about spending out money.

I don't know if somebody was trying to send a message to me or not, but coming back from the hospital, lightning struck probably 1500' behind me off in a field, probably right at a tree line.

It was big simultaneous flash and crack. I thought it was ahead of me, but when I got home, I checked the lightning strike system, and found it. The flash I saw was a reflection turns out. I knew it was close, as no delay and it was the crack of a shock wave, not thunder.

208 I have a stereo component system. It would probably be considered vintage today. I have a Denon turntable that one of my brothers found for me at a garage sale. He told me that it is a high quality turntable and to never sell it cheaply, because new they go for hundreds of dollars. It works much more smoothly than my old Garrard. Definitely a nice turntable. I have a lot of vinyl albums.
My late, oldest brother had a good share of the original rock and roll albums from the fifties, Everly Brothers, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Fats Domino. I have no idea what happened to his old record collection, but I would give my eye teeth to have it. I'm guessing his second wife dumped it when he died.

Yes; he was among the very worst of the war grifters. He's in good company in the GOP on that count, but along with McCain, he was always one of the most flagrant of them.

I wouldn't bother tearing into him for it, it's so commonplace on "our" side. And theirs, for that matter.

I know some people complained about the prices after the initial d20 albums for a penny or whatever it was but it beat the alternative: there were no record stores near me. Got turned on to some great artists the few times I decided to accept the album of the month, to: Boz Scaggs, maybe Peter Frampton.

However, I started buying vinyl at college. There were a couple of good record stores in town and I was beginning to realize that cassettes were very fragile. They deteriorated over time. They got stuck in players. So I would buy vinyl and immediately record onto cassette for listening in the car and such. I still have most of those records and they’re in a lot better shape than some of the used vinyl I buy today from that era!

I did go through a very brief 2 month Diet Coke episode in my 30's when it first came out and I had a newborn and toddler. We knew no one in FL when we moved there and that was the fuel I ran on if needed. I don't like diet anything and drank Coke like a normal person afterwards.

I average 1 or 2 Coke's a week if I need a boost of energy and/or if I have a headache I take with 2 Advil and it cures me.

Perhaps this with genetics is why my cholesterol has never been high as my pipes are cleared of corrosion.

I bought a 1993 Chevy Cavalier and it lasted me about 13-14 years. It was a very solid car and got me where I wanted to go. No issues with it until its final year and then everything just crapped out and I traded it in for a Saturn. That car was garbage and I got rid of it in 2014 for a Honda Civic and that car is a solid little tank. I love it. It just works! I still miss that Cavalier. Nothing fancy, just ran.

Don't freak out though, the acid in your stomach is hydro-chloric (HCl) and it is a way stronger acid than phosphoric.

While we're at it, don't disrespect vinegar (acetic acid). It will burn and crack your skin and make your fingernails fall off if you are over-exposed to it.

That's actually from an old Stephen King interview. He was describing the two real life girls on which he based "Carrie" and said one of them did that. Struck me as so weird when I heard it decades ago that I've never forgotten it.

249 I never stopped listening to vinyl. In the late 90's I bought a new Pioneer stereo, but it didn't come with a turntable. I thought no problem, I had my great JVC turntable. Turned out the stereo had no dedicated input for a turntable and you had to use the aux - which had no amplification. My father in law got me a new Pioneer turntable with the preamp built in, and it's still going great. I'm sure there are lots of good ones out there, I would beware of paying humongous prices though. I play it through the speakers, I don't like things stuck on me.

Also, my best friend's dad worked for GM and bought the mom a new Citation when they first came out. Huge lemon.

252 Vinyl worked because its imperfections sound nice to humans. But you can just record those same imperfections into a digital format and have the same experience over and over without worrying about wearing out your albums, if that's what you want.

About 20 years ago I got it into my head to digitize my LP's. I got a few done, but never finished because it was very time consuming. I had a gadget that you could use to connect the stereo amplifier to your computer. You could download the digitizing software to your computer. It was basically inputing the music into your computer, then the software digitized it. I still have some of the digitized music on my laptop, and it has the little LP noises that you get when you play an LP on your turntable.

Happened to my squadron commander, many years ago. He was playing basketball at the base gym and keeled over, dead before he hit the floor. There were people there who attempted CPR, no dice. They said if it had happened in an ER / Trauma Center, they couldn't have saved him.

Too bad, he was a good guy. RIP Major Truman.

In 2021, Richie Faulkner of Judas Priest suffered an aortic aneurysm and complete aortic dissection while playing the solo in, ironically, "Painkiller". He survived after > 10 hours of emergency surgery. Of course, he was 41 not 71 and in pretty good shape.
