The living room was small compared to the dining room; the kitchen had no real counter space; the basement had gaps in its walls that I just imagine the cats crawling into and getting stuck. And the little bedrooms upstairs carved out of the attic, while cute for kids, would *need* the carpet replaced ASAP.

I guess I'm going to stop looking at older homes. Any one that's in move-in condition would be out of my price range, and the insurance will probably be too much as well *because* it's older.

Was that the one with a slightly longer wheelbase, and the double doors in back that opened like an old-style panel van? I think they call that the Clubman. I always thought, if I lived someplace where they pave the streets, a smaller car like that would be fun to drive.

I've noticed that when I change cars, every 5-7 years, I tend to alternate between large cars and smaller. Mercedes C-Class -> Buick Park Avenue -> Buick Regal -> BMW 3 Series (a little bigger than the Regal) -> Buick LaCrosse, bigger than both of the last two.

If I ever bought an SUV, it would be either the Buick Enclave, the big one of their line, or an SUV that doesn't try to disguise what it is -- a large container on wheels. Like the Chevy Suburban and its squared-off cousins.

Though I confess to a sneaking admiration for the BMW X5 and the Mercedes GLK. Back in '19, when my 3 Series was totaled, the local dealer gave me a loaner for a few days: an X5 in dark blue with caramel-colored leather. Very nice.

This version and Fiona's are the best covers I have heard of All Across the Universe. It is an extremely difficult song to perform well as there is a certain sharpness in the rhythm of the words that have to be hung in the air with delicacy. The tempo is ephemeral and is faster than the mood it creates; most covers slow the song down to evoke that mood of serenity and in the process the interpretation loses its energy. Both versions get these things exactly right and at the same time capture the soul that lingers there in the music.

It is one of Lennon's best compositions; it captures him in a tender moment of contemplation and at the same time seemingly resigned to whatever comes next, a Muse contemplating everything that is impossible to say but easy to feel.

This version and Fiona's are the best covers I have heard of All Across the Universe. It is an extremely difficult song to perform well as there is a certain sharpness in the rhythm of the words that have to be hung in the air with delicacy. The tempo is ephemeral and is faster than the mood it creates; most covers slow the song down to evoke that mood of serenity and in the process the interpretation loses its energy. Both versions get these things exactly right and at the same time capture the soul that lingers there in the music.

It is one of Lennon's best compositions; it captures him in a tender moment of contemplation and at the same time seemingly resigned to whatever comes next, a Muse contemplating everything that is impossible to say but easy to feel.

80 I seem to recall reading that Guy Williams used to advertise a brand of men's fedoras, Champ, I think. Even in the late '50s-early '60s men still wore fedoras, at least in the white-collar world.

Hat wearing had been declining since WWII, partly because men who'd served were tired of head coverings in general, and partly because roof lines on cars were getting lower. It was hard to enter or exit your vehicle without knocking your hat off. When wearing a fedora, I still bump my hat askew a quarter of the time when getting into or out of my car.

Given the miles you drive, you might want to consider a hybrid. I know I know.

I bought a 2024 TRD RAV4 and had it totaled while sitting at a stoplight by a knucklehead that had no insurance. The car had 3,500 mi on it and this occurred 2 days before Christmas. It was a fiasco getting another car and I took what I could get and that turned out to be a RAV4 Hybrid.

20,000 miles in and I've come to really like this car. It's not the fastest thing I've ever owned but it has enough torque that it gets up and goes and the mileage around town is about 45 mi to the gallon. The finish is excellent. Without a doubt, it's a gobot but it's a very nice gobot. I suspect the Lexus version s are something to consider if you're going more upscale.

How does that even happen (I mean the dead people)? This whole weekend will be +100F. It also gets to be -30F here every winter. I'm in the Rockies but it seems most of the bodies are in Chicago.

I thought those dying of heat were usually the elderly cooped up in their apartment blocks. Happens here to, just not to that extent.

We have far more extreme weather in the States. Higher highs, lower lows, more violent storms. With time, we've either adapted our bodies or or technology or engineering to handle it. The Europeans haven't or haven't needed to.

No, but a 2010-2020 F150 (no Ecoboost) is a solid choice if you need a real truck. It will last a long time and is probably the cheapest thing to repair if it needs it.

Speaking of cars... I had a Mini Cooper back around 2005. It was an "S" model, the supercharged one. I bought it used in California while living in Monterey. I took it to Steve Dinan's shop and had a "stage 1" kit installed. New exhaust, some engine bits, and engine remapping to increase horsepower. It was like having a 4 wheel sportbike. Nimble. Fast. But not really suited for long drives. The exhaust was... loud.

My wife hated that car.

92 pfSense humbled me yesterday when I tried to change the Network address on the port that I was connecting to to manage it, and after restarting, I couldn't connect to the web interface to actually manage it.

Let's see... we'll just plug in the monitor to the HDMI port (that worked) and we'll plug the keyboard ... Oh. It's PS/2 and I need a USB one. I'm at a very old legacy setup, and the ONLY keyboard here is this PS/2 hooked to this computer.

Thankfully this was an "add this piece of equipment" so I just hooked all the old stuff back up and put things back the way they were, and I'll take another crack at that today, this time bringing along a USB keyboard.

(Hey, at least it wasn't one of the old 5 pin DIN ones...)

The computer center (in the Union) had a few Lisa's in 1980? 81?. People kept throwing the Operating System into the recycle bin to log off/shut down.

At the same time, my friend had an IBM PC (yes 2 floppys) and it was strictly DOS type commends but worked great Lotus 1-2-3 and Wordperfect (I think).
