Well, my mother is in a nursing home for post-acute therapy (that's what they've all started calling themselves now, "post-acute").
After all that, she was weak as hell, but I think she's coming back. Physically. Her mind, well, she's sort of in La La Land. She's knows who were are, and knows friends and family that have visited, but otherwise is sort of in her own little world. She'll reach for things that aren't there. She seems to think background objects are close up right there at arm's length or something.
And then, she sometimes tries to eat her blanket.... Pulls it up her mouth and chews on it.

She lucked out with her roommate. The old gal is a character, one of the "good ol' gals", and it turns out we're probably related, as we got to trying figure out the cross-pollination with our family trees. Anyway, she's in there after a heart attack, followed by drug-induced rhabdomyolysis, which is pretty bad. It was caused by an interaction with statins and something else, which she says the docs that gave her that ought to have known better.
Anyway, think of Miklos' Darlene when she got old and even ornerier. That woman notices everything, and keeps watch on Mama, and gives a report on all the activities through the night.

According to that lady, Mama will wake up in the middle of night and try to get out of bed. She gets the nurses in there to deal with it.
The other morning, Mama woke up around 6AM after a few hours of sleep, and thought she was in a restaurant in Spartanburg, and was getting no service. This morning, she in a "garden shed" with no place to sit down, also waiting for service.
Anyway, again according the roommate, when she gets in that state, she'll start calling for me, and get mad because I don't come and wonder what's the matter with me.

That's what we're hoping. Over the past year, maybe a little longer, I've noticed she's been slipping a bit, not as aware of things, and getting a bit mixed up from time to time, but nothing this bad.
She was still good until after that emergency surgery (giving her blood thinners was an absolute disaster). She's in an unfamiliar place, and that has a lot to do with it. We'll just see how she progresses.
The PT guy said he managed to get her to walk 40', but it did wear her out. And that's a lot better than just a couple of days ago.

The hardest thing was yesterday evening, when they were changing her bandages. It was very painful, and seeing her wince and moan in pain was just a knife in the stomach. Some friends told me to just leave the room when that happens, but I was helping a bit, which they needed.

I have never been to a good cheese rolling but we did accidently see Scots in Edinburgh one Easter morning roll eggs down a steep hill for kids and dogs. We were sort of struck dumb on Arthur's Seat watching them and could tell it was a thing for many families.
I have a biopsy next week because if you have skin cancer you are never, ever over it. I was once very tan and stupid and now and then pay for it. Over 25yrs since the last wicked one and hopefully this is not one. Sometimes a yearly event! Sometimes I skip many years with no problems!
I know many have it worse and the fight will go on (*hum the Titanic music here).

I've known professional people from Mexico who were the same way. There is a term they use for lower class Mexicans who have a higher proportion of Indian blood. And they really despise them. But they use them as servants. People who were engineers or doctors had full time servants in their homes.

Finished cataloging all the journal references for my book, removing duplicate entries and seeing each one, to the extent possible, had a DOI and web page address.
There are about 7700 entries and about 10% have an attached PDF of the paper. I now have to go through each of the 6900 or so remaining entries to see what's available online for those. I don't want to spend my twilight years in library stacks looking for things.

I haven't seen her get panicked or anxious really with a lot people around, and that's happened a time or two when they have to get several people in to do something. The PT guy says she's doesn't get out of hand and does pretty good with what he has her do. Of course, I was there all the times I see her of course, and that might make a big difference.
It sounds like to me she's sort of having trouble distinguishing between dreams and reality. I was noticed a little bit of that over the last year. She'd wake up and say something strange, and I figured out it was what she was dreaming.

Apparently the 2nd stage peaks at about 4.1 - 4.5g during the end of the burn, which it's getting lighter, and they throttle it down. Design peak axial g is about 6g max they say. Even with a Dragon crew, they get over 4g.
Still nowhere near as bad as the Mercury boys pulled.

Heh. Funny term for the landing burn: "hoverslam". SpaceX came up with that to avoid the previous term for it, suicide burn.
A suicide burn is this. The engines can't be throttled back enough to actually hover the rocket. The most fuel efficient (and therefore allowing you to burn more fuel on the boost phase) is to time the burn at 100% throttle for the engines involved and time it just so the velocity drops to zero right as altitude is zero.
I think for obvious reasons, they dubbed that a suicide burn. The hoverslam is their term of art for it.

Yup, setting the clock back. Basically rewinding the clock a bit before the bad shit happened so it can continue on its journey along its normal lifespan. If a dude comes in with a 30,000 mile engine with a bad head gasket, or cylinder base gasket the whole top end has to come off. At that low miles the pistons are usually perfect, no wear, not even a scratch on the skirts. No wear on the guides, no wear on the bore. The heads come apart, everything gets glass beaded. The combustion chambers, the ports, the valves, piston domes, all of it. I do a fast touch up on the valve seats, polish out the guides, do a ball hone, new rings, and that 30,000 mile engine is clean as new inside, and might as well be a 5,000 mile engine. Rewind the clock.

First of all, “Yellow” popcorn is a variety intended for pre-popping and installed in bags and shipped on trucks. It is tough, the idea is it won’t be a pile of crumbs due to jostling in handling. It has a more rounded shape.
White popcorn is sometimes called “Butterfly” popcorn. It is more tender.
Use a heavy saucepan or even an electric skillet works great. Coconut oil or bacon drippings is preferred. Corn oil would seem logical, but all of the hydrogenated synthetic oils are nasty and will lock your gut up hard.
Light tender crispy popcorn, drenched in butter & salt. I like Cayenne, maybe a little garlic salt, or cannibalize the cheese packet from a Kraft macaroni dinner. Old Bay is pretty good too. Some people like hot sauce mixed 50/50 with the melted butter. A Tbsp of sugar mixed with the popping oil is good too.
Popcorn used to be be dirt cheap. We tried Orville Reddenbacher when it came out, and it wasn’t any better than the Vinton (Iowa) brand. That sadly, went away. Popcorn is a pain to actually grow it.

222 Just finished brining the salmon, DH is smoking it, and everything smells divine here. Will be canning tomorrow when it's all smoked up. 30 jars or so, with a little luck, and if we don't eat it all first.
Last year we did about 72 jars total, but that was fishing for three days, and I think DH is just no up to that any more. We have fun with friends while there, and that is becoming more of a draw than the actual fishing. Maybe once he gets his new knees we will revisit that discussion.

Fenelon, I don't know what your situation is, but I have recently found that having two age similar kittens is a lot easier. They keep each other entertained, they don't rely on unintelligible humans on how to do things, and they teach each other not to bite or play too hard.
In short they socialize each other to be decent.
I have one older cat who was raised in an apartment and never saw another cat for two years until surrendered to the shelter, the kittens really taught him to play too.
if you can, get another kitten, they are twice the fun and less of a hassle.

Got the test results back from this week's CT scan. Have a belly hernia subsequent to a couple of bowel surgeries of the past few years. Hope to get it repaired before something else major goes wrong. Thus, the scan.
Test results say lungs ok, liver normal, bladder normal; pancreas, spleen, adrenals, kidneys, everything normal. Oh, except there's a belly hernia. Duh.
I was glad to see this report. So far, so good. Hey! I'm normal in a lot of ways. Who woulda guessed?!

Strangely enough, I bought it with the idea of speeding up the process for cooking Beans. The instructions specifically warn not to try and cook beans. The theory is a piece of skin from the Bean or whatever might clog the weight assembly. I did try it anyhow, and they cook much faster of course.
But they still aren’t done enough for my liking. Great Northerns are my favorite, and they still need simmering to get “fuzzy” done and thicken up a bit. Nothing better than Navy Bean Soup on a cold day.

I think I just heard some thunder here. 'Tis the season for it. Had two wrecks with the Dixon mower this afternoon. First one, there was an empty steel barrel on the ground to mow around/under. No biggie, just bunt it with the bumper on the mower, right? Well it spun around, and th left rear drive wheel of the mower went into the open end, and got trapped there. I felt like Pooh Bear with the hunny pot on his head. Got the barrel off it, and discovered why it was trapped - the drive chain for the left rear wheel had come off. Got it strung again, and resumed mowing. Not ten minutes later, mower stopped dead, engine continues to run, no traction power. The traction drive belt had been thrown. Mower blades still spinning. Well, that was it. Shut down, towed back up to the shop with the golf cart. I will work on it in the morning. Probably replace both belts with new.

Heh. Last time I went through replacing the drive belt on the JD L110 it was a PIA. Had to remove the deck, put the thing up on jackstands then kinda crawl around underneath getting the deck belt removed from sundry idlers/guides before I could get up into sundry idlers/guides of the drive belt.

In my experience, offices (and dorms) with kitchenettes will generally forbid microwaving popcorn and fish. At least fish won't start a fire, but it's reputed to be an even more intrusive smell (I wouldn't know, people actually followed that rule). Complete self-absorption is apparently just the human norm.

The Dixon is similar in that respect; deck drive belt has come off to change traction drive belt. Ergo, change both at once. I may have a new one of one of them on hand. I have a chain block hanging from a gantry. I can hitch that to the rear of the mower, and hoist it to about a 45 degree angle, making the belts accessible to a Peon seated on the ground. I just used it yesterday, to lift the front of the mower to change blades.

Apple has done... a few things... since Woz stepped down. PPC Macs, Intel Macs, and now M-series Macs, iPod, iPhone, iTunes, Hypercard, Final Cut Pro, GarageBand...
You may recall that they fired Jobs, upon which the company tanked. They brought him back, and the company now has a market cap of $4.64 trillion. Fill in the blanks.
Then there's NeXT (not financially successful as such, but it lives on in what we now call macOS... Jobs brought the OS with him when he came back), Pixar, Disney, and all the other ventures with which he was associated.
As someone put it, the secret of Jobs wasn't that he was magical, it's that he was fucking terrifying.
I think Jobs was pretty obnoxious, and not always a good person. But I'm not going to try to take away his (very real) accomplishments.

Good news. The New Horizons probe (the one that flew by Pluto, and then some interesting Kuiper Belt objects) woke up on time. The spacecraft went into hibernation mode last August, and JPL just received it's "I'm awake" signal right on time. That was followed by status reports, and all systems are green.
While the thing is hibernating, some of the instruments are still active an continuously recording data. They'll soon be downloading all that data.
The spacecraft is now 5.9 billion miles away, and one-way light time is 8 hr, 52 min.

I have no problem with someone using open source for something in a niche market by adding some very specialized code, making it proprietary and therefore collecting enough revenue to support it.
But... taking OS code and adding bells and whistles, closing it and competing with the original OS is just wrong. You're supposed to give back in the open source world, not just take.
Almost all of Apple's contribution to open source occurred after Jobs left.

Voyager 1 will hit the 24 light hour mark on Nov. 18. Voyager 2 is about 19 light hours away.
As their RTGs degrade, they've had to turn off various instruments according to a priority list. Only 2 instruments remain active on V'ger 1.
They had some glitches with both probes, and made some heroic efforts to fix them, from this amazing distance.

It's unknown how long the Voyager's will continue, but 2036 is the hard deadline. They will both be out of range for the DSN by then. Both have been going for just under 49 years now.
Anyway, they'll soon be on "eternal patrol" we'll call it, headed out to wander forever through interstellar space.

Well, given how close the nearest star to us is (besides the sun, duh), and the speed the probes are traveling, it'll be a loooong time before those probes approach any star system. We're talking (at current speeds) something like >80K years to Alpha Centauri, if they're even headed in that direction.

The Voyagers aren't headed to any particular star. Their final escaped trajectories were determined by the final passes they made with the last planets, and those were chosen for the best observations of those planets and moons.
Voyager 1 will get to within 1.6 ly of a red dwarf, Gliese 445, and Voyager 2 within 1.7 ly of another red dwarf, Ross 248.
And then, in about 300,000 years, Voyager 2 will get to within 4 ly of Sirius.

There is a direction, poetically dubbed the Apex of the Sun's Way. That direction in the sky is in Hercules, near Vega. That is the direction the sun (and solar system) is moving relative to the Local Standard of Rest, or LSR.
The LSR is a bit tricky to visualize. The best analogy is imagine a pack of cars going around a big circular track, or hell, just a big pack of cars moving down the highway. There is a mean speed of the whole bunch. That defines the LSR. Now, imagine the "peculiar velocity" of each car relative to that. That speed, and it's direction for the Sun is the Apex of the Sun's Way.
The anti-apex points somewhat close to Sirius.

According to intertubes, Gliese 710 makes it closest pass in about 1.3 million years...and be 10.5K AU. That's inside the roughly 100K AU distance of the Oort Cloud. Expect lots of stuff to be perturbed into the inner solar system at that time...

Yes! Going back in the past, there were two recent close passes, recent being in astronomical/geological terms.
70 kya, a star called Scholz's Star passed within about 50,000 AU. 2.5 mya, HD 7977 came within 6 - 10 kAU. They think we're just on the tail end of the shower of comets that sent coming in.

I'll have to say, old Billions and Billions Carl Sagan (and Frank Drake) were pretty clever in how the information they included to help any aliens figure our our location.
They included some radioactive material, just a little bit, that would allow the aliens to accurately date it. And the pulsar spin rate would've also changed. The aliens could likely figure that out themselves, as they encoded the exact spin rate of the pulsars on the map, but the radioactive sample gives redundancy.
It tells gives them the point of origin, in both space and time.
