18 Tech related: I was advised the other morning that it's probably a good idea to avoid charging one's phone over 85%. What I've noticed while trying to follow that plan is that the phone, an Android, does not run down the battery as fast -- as if, charged to 100%, it begins to roll down a steep cliff (97% at 10 pm, 88% at 5 am). Whereas if I leave it at the 88 instead of recharging to 100 first thing in the morning, the battery % decreases more gradually -- a less steep cliff.

Is this what you have seen, and is it normal?

23 Last night we watched Night and Day, the 1946 biopic of Cole Porter with Cary Grant and Alexis Smith, and a very young Jane Wyman. It follows some of the actual bones of Porter's life: born in Indiana, writing songs at Yale, friendship with professor and later producer and actor Monty Woolley (who plays himself with verve), his marriage to the woman who remained his companion until her death, his leg injuries that put him in a wheelchair, etc.

Good, professional stuff.

If it's an android device, check for the "Battery Saver" option. If on, it starts doing stuff to try to save battery lower than 90% charge, but above that it won't activate, which would account for the first 10% going faster than the remaining 90%.

Not much lesser, Fen. I hear tell they send somebody over to the prospective adopter's house to check out the future home environment, ask for references, etc. On one level it's good to see -- they don't want an animal going to a bad home -- but it's damned intrusive.

The shelter in Vicksburg, MS, where I adopted Stirling did ask for a vet reference, so they could be sure I was the type to see to my past cats' medical needs. That done, everything was fine.

On the other hand, the lady who sold little Dagny to me already knew me from two past adoptions, so we met halfway between her home and mine (in the parking lot of a truck stop, of all places) and took care of everything right there.

35 @32/Wolfus: You're welcome! I don't remember mentioning this option before, but I'm also leaning really hard on the coffee this morning.

Me, I just throw devices on charge overnight and unplug them in the morning. Charging circuits in the devices with USB-C connectors are supposed to prevent the battery from being overcharged, and as far as I can tell, they do a good job of that.

36 I was thinking to have breakfast now, then go over to the nearby mall to try working out in the A/C. Not being sure they will frown on my 1/3 trotting as opposed to purely walking, I'm reluctant to wait until 9:45. Temps and heat index are a bit lower than a week ago -- so I could do my usual mile now, then have the morning free to work on some writing.

Tomorrow, haircut, but that's not until ten. I could work out the same way tomorrow, then go with Linda to the mall to walk on Friday.

Po'ly. (Poorly, in General American.) The agent's phone struggled to stay connected, so we had a hard time seeing anything. The house looks okay -- more on that in a minute -- but the agent warned me about the area. "I legally can't tell you if a neighborhood is good or bad . . . but there was a guy outside here screaming his head off in broad daylight." "I don't have to move 800 miles for that," I said, "I can get that right here!" The agent agreed he was not comfortable in the area, and we left it at that.

Pawn here was kind enough to offer some insights based on the Realtor pics, and the place might need more work than it appeared to.

So the hunt continues.

Right; I was going to get there at ten, and the stores, most, don't open until eleven. I just envision some officious Karen in a "security" uniform, the type who'd have rousted you in 2021 about wearing a face diaper, reading me the riot act about what she calls "running."

Maybe it's only local -- the inhabitants around here don't care for their children, let alone their pets -- or maybe it was a procedure the SPCA and other shelters don't do any more.

43 *sighs* x.com is now insisting that you log in if you try to click the "play" icon on a user's individual post with a video. This used to work a few days ago.

So I've been using xcancel.com to get around that, but now it's having problems where it just loops a bunch of times trying to get access to the post (and its comments) and then if it loops too long, I get locked out with a "429 Too Many Requests" error, and any subsequent attempt to access xcancel.com gets that error as well (at least for a while, I'm not sure how long I'm locked out.)

I updated all my add-ons in Firefox, and then whitelisted xcancel.com in uBlock Origin, but it's still doing it. Don't know if it's a problem on their end or mine.

All this was fine a few days ago.

54 Looking for news on that cargo plane that crashed off the coast of Pakistan, I'm turning up only half-day old stories and reports from kinda sketchy sites.

Posted by: m at July 08, 2026 06:43 AM (6wpGE)

55 Well, here's something recent from ABC News:

Pakistan expands search for missing cargo plane as rough seas hamper rescue efforts

Pakistan’s Navy and civilian authorities have expanded the search for a cargo plane feared to have crashed after it disappeared from radar and lost contact with air traffic control en route to the city of Karachi

Posted by: m at July 08, 2026 06:45 AM (6wpGE)

56 Officials said the Karachi-bound aircraft, operated by the private carrier K2 Airways, reported a navigational system issue while flying from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates with five people on board.

The search is still ongoing, according to three officials familiar with the rescue operation.

Good morning, everyone.

Update on the shoulder surgery. Went very quickly, only a rotator cuff repair, no muscles or tendons were in need of repair. Five little laproscopic incisions. No need for pain meds either! Feels like a muscle ache from loosing a 'you flinched you get two punches battle'. First physical therapy is today at 1500, shouldn't be problematic, as I already have reasonable range of motion back. Hoping it's only range of motion and strength work.

This was not at all my experience in '91 when I had a complete rebuild on my right shoulder including pig cartilage on the rotator cuff. Two nights, three days in William Beaumont on Ft. Bliss. Level 10 pain for two weeks, 2 and a half years to get limited range of motion and strength back. Worst pain ever. We're talking Man Cold level miserableness.

81 I saw this in real life in the locker room at Worldgate near Dulles.

A guy with Executive silver hair was surrounded by minions that questioned him sharply on how he, yes he, got such a beautiful, cultured wife. This went on for a while, as they were astonished at his now wife (probably not 25 but still younger than him). He was getting annoyed at the thought that he could not pull it off.

He then said, come in closer, and I'll tell you how. "I told her I had 15 million dollars more than I have, and that I was 15 years older than I am."

Shut them up.

Two year before, I saw this same man, surrounded by a different group of slightly younger men, say "I don't mind gay marriage, but I want them to undergo a gay divorce." I took from that comment, said with biting vehemence, he had recently been unhappily divorced.

84 "President Trump said Wednesday that he believes his memorandum of understanding with Iran is dead after he ordered overnight airstrikes on 80 targets after Iranian forces attacked three commercial ships."

What a surprise. To no one.

I suspect President Trump simply wanted to tamp down the conflict a bit to get through the 250th Independence Day celebrations. Now he has a freer hand to start punishing the IRGC.

Though now he has to get through the midterms...

85 If the Iran MOU is dead, that’s a good thing. Finally…. Maybe Trump wanted to get past the 250th…

92 I like Trump. I like that he is trying to be a peacemaker. "Blessed are the peacemakers..."

Iran has abused his patience and is now going to learn something new.

96 The MOU isn't dead, this is just the IRGC way of negotiating. Trump is gonna have to kill some of their leadership or knock down a bridge or two every time they misbehave.

97 I think you are being overly generous.

Several morons were amazingly credulous and defensive of it.

So in the end, what did it accomplish?
Pro: it temporarily knocked oil prices down , blunting political criticism plus it gave us a quiet weekend for the 250th.
Con: it allowed Iran to rest, regroup, and rearm with shipments from China and Russia, plus it completely negated any economic effects of the two month blockade we’d imposed.
So politically it was justifiable; from a military standpoint it was idiotic.

Hi, tubal. I think that's a great idea- and over the years fasting, has become much more than about fasting from food. We just had a discussion during Lent over this. I'm not sure how fasting from chocolate for instance , draws one closer to God, whereas fasting from websites and spending time in prayer, reading Scripture could aid one in the
Idea of "Create in me a clean heart" and "Renew a right spirit within me" and asking God to transform one by the power of the Holy Spirit into -as far as possible in this life- into the image of Jesus Christ and full of the fruit of the Spirit

God bless you and others engaging In this. At some point, come back and tell us how it went.

99 @80/fd: "What a surprise. To no one."

This is "as I understand it". If I'm wrong, let me know please?

Under the War Powers Resolution, a president can take military action against another foreign power for 60 days, plus an additional 30 days for an organized withdrawal in which combat can still take place. After that he needs authorization from Congress to continue, or an official Declaration of War.

So, by signing a peace agreement, the former military action was officially ended, and with this new attack by Iran and Trump's response to it, the 90 day clock starts all over again.

In theory, we tracked those activities and gained information.

>My understanding is that the marines serve at the president's pleasure, any time, any where. I don't recall any grace period on the war powers resolution. A cease fire pretty much covers that.

Congress is required to call in and fund the militia, the army, for a declared war. Of course funding for any action is always going to be a congressional issue.

We have a single CinC, not 535. Congress has oversight and controls the money. But for the sake of unity of command we have a single CinC.

And never forget: Declarations of War are for diplomats, not the military.
