----- USA got eliminated from the World Cup? Not so fast!
![]() ----- Cashing in on the World Cup I'm a veteran who runs a flag business. We were blindsided by World Cup demand, and sales are up 130% Our flag sales are normally almost entirely US, state, and military flags. So when we started getting more and more inquiries about world flags during our offseason in January and February, I knew something was up. Then I started putting it all together. The World Cup was coming, and it was about to change our business. *** When we took over, our goal was simply to survive those first few months and build out the e-commerce side of the business. We certainly weren't looking ahead to the World Cup or America's 250th birthday, but we've definitely benefited from some tailwinds. *** The World Cup, combined with America's 250th anniversary, has supercharged our business. We've seen tremendous national growth, and these events have definitely moved the needle for us. We've been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.Good ol' capitalism. Gotta love it! ----- Any other map and highway nerds out there? 70 Years of the Interstate: How the U.S. Highway System Built the America We Know ![]() Seventy years ago, on June 29, 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, aka the National Interstate and Defense Highways Act, into law. It created the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, better known as the Interstate Highway System. Or, simply, “the Interstate.” Ike signed the bill, along with 26 others that day, from a hospital bed at Walter Reed after an intestinal infection and operation. No press. No photographers. His press secretary was there to witness the signing, and that’s it. It was a shrug-worthy opening ceremony for what would become this country’s largest-ever public works project as well as an agent of almost immeasurable cultural, economic, and physical change. Aside from being a marvel of civil engineering, the Interstates created jobs and boosted the economy. They made travel easier and more accessible. They made shipping more efficient. They also brought added safety compared to other highways. But they also screwed a lot of people over. Small towns bypassed by new Interstate routes withered and died. According to Department of Transportation estimates, Interstate construction displaced over a million Americans and destroyed 475,000 homes. *** When the original 1916 Federal Highway Aid Act expired, the Federal Highway Aid Act of 1921 superseded it. The ’21 bill further consolidated the federal/state partnership, allowing states to conduct their own road-building projects, albeit to federal standards, with $75M allocated annually for the construction of a national road grid of interconnected “primary highways.” The “later [1956] interstate highway bill… would not have been possible, or necessary” without the 1921 bill, according to Swift. By 1921, the Office of Road Inquiry had grown into the Bureau of Public Roads. Its head, Thomas MacDonald, wanted a better understanding of the nation’s road system, not just for public use but for military use. That year, he commissioned the Army to produce a map of public roads that were useful for interstate travel as well as for defense. The so-called “Pershing Map,” after the general who produced it, included 78,000 miles of public roads and proved to be an important tool in later planning for the Interstate system. Another important step in the growing road network was the United States Numbered Highway System, first designated 100 years ago in 1926. Interstate trails and named highways had been spreading across the country, but with no uniformity and spotty maintenance. The Numbered Highway System addressed this by creating the “U.S. Routes,” with numbers instead of names, identified by a recognizable white-and-black shield. North-south routes were to feature odd numbers, with the lowest number starting on the East Coast and the most significant routes ending in “1” or “5.” East-west routes featured even numbers, with the lowest number starting on the northern border and primary routes ending in “0.” Despite the name “U.S. Routes,” these roads were built and are maintained at the state level. By the end of the 1920s, the Bureau had invested three-quarters of a billion dollars in road building and improvement, paving or resurfacing over 90,000 miles of highway, according to Spencer Headworth’s book Rules of the Road.Very long article but fascinating for aforementioned map / highways nerds like me. Check it out and catch me at the next MoMe so we can discuss this kin of stuff! Tonight's ONT brought to you by Swedish forwardness ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

COL Eisenhower also played a prominent role as Chief of Staff for the Blue Army (Third Army) under Lieutenant General Krueger during the Louisiana Maneuvers. These exercises exposed both talent (Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley) and exposed weaknesses in training, equipment, and transportation. Eisenhower’s performance there lead to his assignment to the War Plans Division.

Is there a secret message with the musical selections this evening....there should be, because it fits the 2018 Horizon Air Bombardier Q400 incident.
Jet Airliner- Some guy named Richard Russell hopped in a Horizon Air De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 and took it up at Seattle-Tacoma Airport. Joy Ride- Russell few around for about 70 minutes having a good old time. He told traffic control he wanted to see what the plane could do. He even completed a barrel roll. Screaming in the night- Eventually Russell had his fill and flew it into Ketron Island. This all took place after 8pm....There wasn't a scream of fear, but more of excitement as Russel crashed head on into the island. (If there is no secret message in the song picks, I'm going to suggest a glitch in the matrix, because this event fit perfectly. I would have thrown in "Roll Out the Barrel" drinking song as the third selection, however commemorate this idiot's successful barrel roll in a passenger plane without any flying experience) Posted by: Orson at July 07, 2026 10:31 PM (dIske) 89

Alaska Airlines, oh yeah the 727 crash.
To cut costs they tripled inspection time on the jackscrew used to move the t-tail. Plane took off from Mexico and in flight the jackscrew malfunctioned freezing the t-tail. The pilots managed to recover, declare an emergency, and start flying to land it. But they decided to troubleshoot the issue further. What resulted was them completely popping the cap on the jackscrew and the 727 plummeted into the Pacific killing everyone. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 07, 2026 10:44 PM (2GVsD) 121

Or is it the chronic paranoia of someone, which is the most logical answer. Thanks.
Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at July 07, 2026 10:21 PM (hzuYO) Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean no one is actually out to get you. Two weeks of water is 2 of those big cases of bottled water, if you ration. I would also have a box of the marine water pouches (like Capri Sun juice pouches) on hand - you can punch a small hole in them and wash wounds, clean your hands, etc. Then, if a semi-predictable disaster (like a hurricane) is coming, you fill up the tub and use a couple of gallon jugs (cut them so they have a decent opening but you still have a handle) to scoop water out for washing things or flushing your toilet. You can also use the drain valve on your water heater (turn off the heat source before doing this) for however many gallons the tank holds (40-50 gal is most common). There are more "prepper" things to do, but those are good for non-TEOTWAWKI things. Almond was big in 1988. On the other hand, there is no way to confuse the 2. Almond is off white, or antique white looking. Or is it the chronic paranoia of someone, which is the most logical answer. Thanks. Posted by: ChristyBlinkyTheGreat at July 07, 2026 10:21 PM (hzuYO) it is always good to keep some extra on hand. I suggest at the very least a 5 gallon bucket of rice, a 5 gallon bucket of beans or lentils, and one of those big jars of coconut oil. Once you start getting into a propane stove, or cans of Spam, and from there a year's supply of everything, you are now prepping and considering getting half a dozen chickens. I made jam today. Cherry jam that I am afraid did not gel correctly because I didn't follow the recipe. This time it bit me. Posted by: Kindltot at July 07, 2026 11:10 PM (rbvCR) 169
I see the difference now, after looking it up. It is more almond-y, but darker and yellower, but not as bad as Harvest Gold. Perhaps it darkened as it aged. Patina, even. Non-smoker household.
Posted by: Count de Monet at July 07, 2026 11:03 PM (wVcYX) It may have darkened just from cooking in the kitchen. I have seen cabinets darken/yellow the same way. In the earlier 80's the better dishwashers used to come with different color panels, because they all had trim kits. You got 2 panels with a different color on each side. It was white, almond, black, and the 4th color was usually a throwback. Usually harvest gold. The 4th color was actually a crap shoot, it could have been that brown, or avocado, or harvest gold, but usually harvest gold. You pop the stainless trim off the side, slide out the panels, and just use what color you wanted. Usually people went with the almond, that was the "in" color at the time. Well, I got that engine that I was working on torn down. All the main bearings are wiped out, except for #4, and it shows signs of oil starvation. The big shocka was #3 main bearing cap was installed improperly, hanging up on the lip of the crankcase web, but tightened down nevertheless. Result: end of cast-iron bearing cap all spread and cracked in two places. That may well have been the genesis of the bearing failure. Regardless, it is 100% certain proof that the previous "rebuilder" fucked up, big time. There is no excuse for that. Even if it happened by accident, a good shop would say, "Oh shit!", and get another main cap, line-hone it, and start over. Sending it out that way borders on criminal, IMHO.
