Also given how dire the Xbox situation is, even if they don't all deserve this they had to have known it was coming.
I remember a layoff cycle at a company I worked at 30 years ago...they didn't tell folks exactly who was being laid off, but IT knew and had removed their server access and their server private directories ahead of time, so everybody figured it out pretty quickly... OOPSIE... Company learned from this and didn't do that the next layoff cycle... Posted by: jim (in Kalifornia) at July 07, 2026 05:03 AM (l3cgK) 25

Microsoft layoffs are always timed to the end-of-year review cycle which is in June if I remember correctly. Microsoft uses this as an opportunity to quietly get rid of the bottom 10%. This year its a bit more exciting because the Xbox division Is imploding.

My experiment treating a Samsung Tab S11 Lite with the Slim keyboard as a very light duty PC that I can keep the glove box of the car is going much better than I thought I would. This is working out for a several reasons.
The hardware itself is well built, has a pretty good screen, has an SD card slot if I get to be a pack rat, and the performance of it is completely sufficient. The keyboard is a bit cramped but for knocking out quick emails, a quick note or updating a spreadsheet it's totally sufficient. The battery in life is excellent. The stereo speaker system is sufficiently loud for watching movies. The way I got around Android tablets having a crappy file system is that I use OneDrive to handle that task. The app is well integrated into Android so it works very well. Samsung One UI desktop is a far cry from the crappy software they used to kick out. It's actually very polished and quite useful. The critical component is it has a taskbar that runs along the bottom of the screen and that allows you to pin all your usual suspects. Plus it has a stripped down version of Dex that you can hop into and suddenly you have a rudimentary windowing PC. For the people who can't get out to walk because it's too hot or you don't belong to a gym, you might consider going to the store if you can. It's air conditioned there and if you go in the early morning you have open aisles to walk in. If you go later in the day you can find interesting people to see- and talk to -if you chose to. Yesterday there was a lovely mom and her beautiful little daughter
I told the mom how lovely her daughter was. The daughter was three. It can make someone's day if you give them a compliment and it makes you feel better too. I realize that speaking to ladies might be a bit problematic if you're a man. Oh, yes, there was a very tall man with an energetic bouncing boy of about five, but I didn't speak to them. S11 is a typo.
Samsung - Galaxy Tab S10 Lite - 10.9" 128GB - Wi-Fi - with S-Pen - Lite Gray is the correct model. This is something you strictly buy on sale. The current prices are between $300 and $400 for the tablet and about $140 for the keyboard. I paid about $325 for the two and it's not worth a penny more than that. re Starlink:
- burning up satellites; wow, they are really looking for any possible way to hurt Elon, aren't they? - Starlink is becoming competitive with our current provider at $55/mo; we will join up soon, I'm pretty sure. For us, the decision is almost completely political, I want our money to support someone we respect as an unstoppable innovator, plus someone who is on "our side". Service probably isn't much better or worse than the wire, so who cares. Pro tip: keep the dish free of snow (for those who get water crystals in season). Noon today is the time for the video tour of my latest house crush. It's a great-looking 2BR/1BA bungalow with 2-car garage, a little covered porch and back patio, hardwood floors *throughout*, a brick wall in the kitchen, in a nice historic neighborhood. It faces west and has no basement, but those are minor things, esp. at the low-ish price.
