Top Story

SK Hynix - the third of the Big Three memory manufacturers after Micron and Samsung - is planning to invest $712.5 billion to expand production. (Tom's Hardware)

Which I am pretty sure is still a lot.

The article says the total amount involved is 1.1 trillion won (KRW), but that's a mistake; it's actually 1.1 quadrillion won.

$64 billion goes to expanding the company's existing facilities at Cheongju for producing NAND flash and packaging chips. $389 billion goes to the new campus at Yongin with initial production planned for next year and meaningful scale in 2028. The site was originally planned for completion in 2045, but that's been accelerated to 2033 - still a fair way out, but factories will come online in stages throughout those years.

And $259 billion to a brand new campus that they have not even settled on a location for just yet.

SpaceX has categorically denied that it is working on an AI device thinner than an iPhone running a proprietary operating system that is coloured mint green and makes random South American frog noises when you drop it into wet cement. (Tom's Hardware)

Seems oddly specific.
Intel is planning to restart supply of 10th, 12th, 13th, and 14th generation processors... In China. (WCCFTech)

14th - and for some reason, 12th - generation chips are still readily available, and Intel has committed to continued production. 13th generation chips have disappeared from the market but nobody really misses them because they are the same as 14th generation chips only slightly worse.

Aren't Raspberry Pi board extremely expensive now, I hear two of you ask.

Well, yes, but actually no. This project is built around the Pi Zero family, which while low-end (all versions have 512MB of RAM) has weathered the DRAM Apocalypse better than other models.

31 I've got a few things on the plate today. Workout, cleanup and breakfast; washing the car; Walmart and maybe Aldi. Seems I've settled into Monday and Friday as my main grocery run days.

Yesterday we visited a local food bank/thrift store Linda knows. She donated a few things, and picked up some shorts, $1 each. There usually isn't anything around for me -- though last year I got a good mechanical kitchen timer almost new in the box. And yesterday there were two leather or near-leather suitcase sets, one an American Tourister made in USA, for $10 each. So rarely do I travel now that buying suitcases or overnight bags seems pointless . . . but they are open today . . .

34 I dreamed I was under a deadline. I had to write a paper of some kind which involved interviewing people in a mining town, and then (to balance the paper) interviewing somebody at mine management. The worker I interviewed was willing to give me the phone number of the mine office, but I kept writing it down wrong because the guy (who looked like actor Barry Sullivan) was in another room and was shouting the digits to me, and it was almost five p.m. on Friday anyway. And the paper was due on Monday. Then I woke up.

For me, its the screen that is the biggest drain, because I constantly forget to turn the thing off when I'm not using it "for a few minutes", and I often have to have the brightness cranked to deal with bright environments I'm in.

Now if you've got some app you're not really using that's chewing up a lot of battery, maybe that app is doing something behind the scenes you don't really want.

To find out what's using your power since the last charge (best to use when you're closer to the end of your charge):

Settings > Battery > Battery Usage

Also:

Settings > Battery > Battery Manager >
Manage apps automatically
(Maybe try turning on that setting.)

53 G & R, I just restarted my phone, an Android about two years old, and cleared out some of the memory and storage. The phone tells me max battery life can best be achieved by keeping the phone at no more than 85% charge. Somehow that worries me. I like to charge it to 100% first thing in the a.m., then let it run down to about 88% the next morning. Should I do this 85% thing?

77 There does come a point where a device's battery has gotten old and tired and needs replacing.

This is why I hate it when device manufacturers make that process difficult or nigh-impossible. Replacing a battery should be designed to be a relatively easy process. (Of course then they couldn't make you buy an all-new device.)

With memory and chip prices being what they are, they're going to start getting some serious push-back from the market on that wasteful attitude.

To avoid a horrible shock simply avoid touching both the positive and negative terminals on the battery… oh, not that kinda battery… or don’t be like Kramer and use a metal paper clip to short out an apartment’s electrical circuitry because then you’ll have to feed the cat under the door with very thinly sliced meats… I still haven’t fully woken up

This is why I hate it when device manufacturers make that process difficult or nigh-impossible. Replacing a battery should be designed to be a relatively easy process. (Of course then they couldn't make you buy an all-new device.)

With memory and chip prices being what they are, they're going to start getting some serious push-back from the market on that wasteful attitude.

I have an Android phone. I use an app called "task manager" (yeah, just like Windows) to kill processes running in the background that are not needed and freeing up memory.

My battery typically lasts around 2-3 days. But I'm not on it all the time as I have a PC that I mostly use.

The Google Play Store should have that app. It's icon is the little green android dude.

99 My battery solution was buying a "uleFone" Power Armor 16S off of Amazon. Main selling feature to me: 9600 mAh battery. That makes this phone "thick", rhymes with "brick" which also describes the phone's weight. It ain't light.

It has a raised bezel to protect the screen if I drop it. I purchased the external protective clip-on plastic housing - downside of which is it's brittle and I'm on my third one. Still better than breaking the phone itself when I drop it.

This phone is NOT packed full of cruftware like what comes from Samsung and the others. I've grown to like my brickphone.

If I keep the background apps shut down, and keep the screen turned down to a reasonable brightness while remembering to turn the screen off when I'm not using it, I can get 5 days out of it.

The city we lived in while in California was similar. The resident Mexicans went nutz with their displays, but us white folks had the city cops on our ass every year.

Arrested the neighbor's boy one time.

What a shit show.
