Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thursday Overnight Open Thread - July 2, 2026 [Doof]![]() Happy Birthday, USA! Oh, you aren't celebrating our country's birthday until Saturday? You think I'm early? Guess again! ![]() On this day in 1776, the United States was actually born. Not July 4. July 2. That's the day the Continental Congress voted to break from Britain, and John Adams was so certain of it that he predicted July 2 would be the great American holiday forever. He nailed everything except the date. The vote came down to the wire, and one man had to ride through the night to save it. Delaware's delegation was split, one for independence, one against, which meant the colony's vote canceled itself out. The tie-breaker, Caesar Rodney, was 80 miles away in Delaware. He got word that he was needed and rode all night through a summer thunderstorm, sick and in pain, boots and spurs still on, and made it into Philadelphia just in time to cast Delaware's vote for independence. The other holdouts fell into place too. In Pennsylvania, the men most opposed, including John Dickinson, deliberately stayed away from the chamber so their colony could swing to yes. South Carolina came around for the sake of a united front. When the roll was called, twelve colonies voted for independence and not a single one voted against. New York simply abstained, waiting on permission from home. And so, on July 2, 1776, it was done. The colonies had legally, officially declared themselves free. *** So why do we celebrate the 4th? Because that's the day Congress approved the final wording of the document explaining the decision, the Declaration of Independence. The vote to be free happened on the 2nd. The paperwork got finished on the 4th, and history remembered the paperwork. Happy July 2nd! ![]() July 2 is one of my favorite dates because of John Adams. July 2, 1786, the delegates are exhausted, the debates have dragged on for weeks, and the weight of history presses down like the summer humidity. On this very day, July 2, 1776, Adams and his allies push the Continental Congress to vote for independence from Great Britain. The resolution passes. The colonies are no longer subjects; they are free, or at least determined to become so. Adams writes to his beloved Abigail that day: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America… It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” He was off by two days. July 4 would get the glory when the Declaration was formally adopted, but he nailed the spirit. July 2 / July 4 - whatever it takes. Let's just enjoy something our president has done to help us celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence.

----- Vigilante justice comes in many forms. When it involves shaming the perpetrators, bonus points should be awarded! Mexican Batman Duct-Tapes Alleged Motorcycle Thieves to Lamp Posts ![]() Tired of waiting for local police to do their duty and bring criminals to justice, a mysterious vigilante in the town of Lagos de Moreno, Mexico’s Jalisco state, has been duct-taping alleged motorcycle thieves to lamp posts and leaving them for authorities to find. At least five ‘victims’ have been found so far. The mysterious ‘Batman’ started operating in Lagos de Moreno in mid-June. The first person was found duct-taped to a lamp post, with ‘thief’ written on his forehead, on June 13th. An allegedly stolen motorcycle was also found nearby, suggesting that the immobilized person was a thief. But this was only the beginning, as police have since discovered at least 4 other alleged thieves tied to lamp posts.Video segment (en Espanol) at the link. CONVENT AND ST PATRICK BURIAL SITE BURN DOWN IN DOWNPATRICK, MEDIA SAYS NOTHING Yesterday the convent and the burial place of Saint Patrick himself in Downpatrick was reduced to ashes. [Poem] "The Wrath of the Awakened Saxon" by Rudyard Kipling It was not part of their blood, It came to them very late, With long arrears to make good, When the Saxon began to hate. They were not easily moved, They were icy -- willing to wait Till every count should be proved, Ere the Saxon began to hate. Their voices were even and low. Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show When the Saxon began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd. It was not taught by the state. No man spoke it aloud When the Saxon began to hate. It was not suddently bred. It will not swiftly abate. Through the chilled years ahead, When Time shall count from the date That the Saxon began to hate. Very cool ONT, Doof. Thank you.
When I used to go with my husband to DC years ago we'd stay in a hotel in DuPont Circle. Diplomat's homes and lots of homos, but very pretty houses and grounds. I even got to sneer at a car leaving the Congressional Black Caucus, walking back from pizza. Ugh. Anyway! We often faced the Washington Memorial from our hotel, and I got to see it at night...with planes flying along the Potomac River behind it. The birthday gif above is outstanding! Tomorrow is my dude's birthday and he catches up with me. I'm 5wks older than him. Normally a lot of plans for this and the 4th but probably not this year due to some recent minor medical stuff (he's going to be fine). Have a safe, healthy, and FUN weekend, y'all!!! July 4th was the day the Declaration was published to the citizens of Philadelphia--- that was the day they learned of it.
The Continental Congress was woefully inadequate for the task at hand. It didn't have power to impose taxes. All the Congress could do was politely ask the states for money. Same with raising new troops-- ask politely. The situation almost drove George Washington to distraction. His troops spent most of the war wearing rags; without proper tents or blankets; usually unpaid-- and close to starving. I used to wonder how Congress could've been so negligent., so irresponsible with their necks on the line. In truth, Congress lacked the powers necessary to prosecute the war. That was the original sin. After the was ended in 1783, same situation until the Constitution was ratified in 1789. the infant United States government was the world's laughingstock. No gold; couldn't levy taxes; nobody would lend us money. Posted by: mnw at July 02, 2026 10:45 PM (RCjYY) 123

The paperwork didnt get finished until August. The celebration is for the Declaration, which was far more revolutionary than the vote. The Declaration set up everything that followed, from the Washingtons resignation to the Articles to the Constitution and to a century and a half of no President running for more than two terms.
Adams wrote that letter before the Declaration, but even he recognized afterward that July 4 was the day to be celebrated. Of the first five Presidents, three of them died on the Fourth. People who are dying will hold on for many things: the birth of a child, a wedding, for one last visit from a far away loved one. Adams, Jefferson, and Monroe held out to the Fourth of July. They recognized its importance. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at July 02, 2026 11:03 PM (kYmoU) 178

98 Tomorrow will be the Mrs and my 51st wedding anniversary, so it's an early celebratory dinner. Essence Fest is this weekend, so we will stay away from the Quarter and Uptown. There are still many good places in the suburbs.
Hope everyone has a fun 4th. Posted by: javems at July 02, 2026 10:34 PM (zFsEm) ********** Happy 51st!!! NOLA? We accidently visited NOLA during the Essence Festival several years ago with my mother and aunt (to see the WWII Museum). It was my first visit after Katrina and I wondered what on earth was going on and why are we the only white people here? Heh. Finally figured it out and still had a lovely time from the Monteleone where my parent's had their honeymoon the year before I hatched. We married on St. Patrick's Day 47yrs ago in MS and honeymooned in NOLA and I did not figure on the parade and insanity because I was young. We had a good time and survived. My grandparents also honeymooned in NOLA. Galatoire's is our favorite and must go to every time we are there for 5 generations. I avoid crowds and our city is not a fraction as insane as NOLA. Anyway there's also a Crazy Horse memorial out there. Been built since 1948. Nowhere near being finished but I'm sure it's been funded
Posted by: gKWVE at July 02, 2026 10:47 PM (gKWVE) I've seen that several times. It's maybe half finished. I like what I've seen, but it's kind of sobering to know that I'll be dead before it's finished. Crazy Horse's face and arm are nearly complete, as is the head of the horse. Looks pretty cool, but it ain't done. Posted by: Pug Mahon, I Have Become Comfortably Lame at July 02, 2026 10:53 PM (0aYVJ) I first saw it in 1990 the first year I did the sturgis rally. The face wasn't even that defined yet. Then I went 10 years in a row and stopped every year to see it. The last year I went the face was looking pretty good, but the hand and arm wasn't even remotely shaped. I just looked it up and the hand and arm are looking decent. Took 25 years for that little bit. Its going to be a looooong time before that sucker is done. Since 1948 they did a face and an arm. Shit man... Although most people seem convinced this crusade against alleged motorcycle thieves is the work of a single vigilante, local authorities told news reporters that this might be the work of a gang of vigilantes. Interestingly, so far, the victims have not provided any clarification in that regard. … the five men found bound so far are currently being treated as victims, adding that no one should take the law into their own hands, regardless of their motives.
Illustrates two things about vigilantism. One is, because Spider-Man webbed up the crooks but will not be testifying, because Superman dropped Luthor off directly in the prison and flew off, the Law really has nothing to go on to persecute the criminals. But also, if the vigilantes are scary enough, the crooks will live with apprehension of getting worse than the Law would dish out. July 2, 1776, the delegates are exhausted, the debates have dragged on for weeks, and the weight of history presses down like the summer humidity.
Coming from one end of the hall, the Founders lifted their heads to the bellowing voice of their elder statesman and bon vivant, Ben Franklin. "Goddammit Adams, stop bogarting that joint! It's 'puff, puff, pass'. How many times do I have to fucking tell you???" John Adams, a father of five, didn't hear a word Franklin said. Taking another draw on some of Thomas Jefferson's finest, all Adams could think about was getting home to his beloved wife Abigail and burying himself in her sweet, sweet snizz. Adams had been the engine of independence, penting up everything else until realizing his goal, and he was horny. Posted by: Dark Lixtiquatal at July 02, 2026 11:39 PM (DZ9Lv) 239

Wha??? The “Louisiana Purchase” was intended, to buy merely the port of New Orleans. Very strategic. Posted by: Anonymous Rogue in Kalifornistan (ARiK's Phone) at July 03, 2026 12:06 AM The historical part of Dodge City is pretty "tourist trappy", but probably worth doing once if you are passing through. Better would be if you knew a Moron type in the area (like Rancher Bob or Ben Had) and rode out with them in the morning to check if all of the windmills are pumping, and all of the spring calves are thriving. Repair two sections of fence, and then head back to the barn to take care of the horses. Grill up some beef for dinner, drink a few beers, and listen to some local stories. Wish I had someone out that way to hook you up with! If your trip dates have some latitude, you might check the dates for the actual rodeos in Dodge City. Those are fun, and real - rather than for tourists. end of part I. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at July 03, 2026 12:27 AM (HlyYF) 295

They did take a lot of stuff. They ran out of everything, however. They were in rags basically, by the time they made it back. The one thing they didn’t run out of, was ammunition. Lead & powder. It is estimated they had enough to do the entire expedition all over again. Lewis was a good commander.
They ran out of tobacco, when I think about it, that doesn’t make sense. Lewis was trained as a botanist and it is native to North America. The folks that chewed tobacco were reduced to cutting up pipes and sucking on the nicotine infused wood. Lewis wrote “they barely took time to unsaddle their horses, and were digging frantically” when they arrived at one of their Great Falls caches on the return journey. Had tobacco stored. They ran out of Whiskey on July 4th 1804 iirc. Had a party. Whiskey was part of a soldier’s pay and allowances, a daily ration. They also took 50 pounds of green coffee beans. Must have been for special occasions. Sounds like a lot, but I doubt they were sharing it with the party. Plus they wanted the booze anyhow. A little interesting excursion into some orbital mechanics of why NASA chose that Pegasus launch vehicle. It's a plane launched thing. A modified Lockeed L-1011 Tri Star carries the rocket under it's belly to about 40K ft, then drops it. It then fires and continues to orbit. The plane gets it up that high, so it makes for some advantages for small payloads. The main trouble here, though is the SWIFT satellite's inclination. It's just 20 degrees, and that's a bitch. While sort of surprising maybe at first, the minimum inclination you can reach using a normal, efficient "gravity turn" trajectory is exactly equal to your launch latitude. The Cape is 28.4 degrees latitude. You can do it, but it requires an expensive (in terms of delta-v) "dog leg" maneuver. With the plane launch, you can just fly down to the needed latitude. Posted by: mnw at July 03, 2026 12:13 AM (RCjYY) If France had managed to reduce Haiti and take Hispanola, along with controlling Cuba, Mexico and Florida, Napoleon would have had the Gulf of America sewn up for another empire in the new world. It was the area that was richest in resources, sugar, and been able to collapse the British colonies in that area as well. He might have well been able to leverage that into a full victory in Europe as well. But instead Malaria and unending guerilla warfare in Haiti destroyed the Leclerc expedition, and he had a fire sale of what he had full rights to. I was working for the USPS when they were brought on and they were cranky, difficult, had poor lines of vision, hard to work on, and the front end would skid in wet leaves. The carriers didn't care for them much, and the mechanics worked on them endlessly. Eventually Grumman got around to doing modifications - the big side window helped, but they were never loved. They were a absolute success for people who never had to drive them, and I am sure they profited from them. LLMs lasted a generation beyond what they were intended to for the same reason the Letter Sorting Machines lasted so long in operation, and the freaking SCALES still were stenciled POD - Post Office Department - in the 90's. USPS won's spend. Grumman couldn't figure out how to build a boxy truck that was easy to drive and easy to walk in and out of. International Harvester figured it out. Even Humvee had lots of problems to begin with and the Army had more money to demand redesigns than the USPS ever did. So the Long Life Vehicle was what it was, as contracted and built. Appears that Karp is saying that AI will be nationalized because,
first, some of the developers are not using restraint in the national interest (ie. Altman - loose lips) then the option will be between regulation (like congress) by people who don't know what they're doing (we've seen that) or the govt, ie admin or pentagon taking part of it - in order to exercise security controls. He's not closed to another way it's just the options he sees. -My take. Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at July 03, 2026 12:53 AM (RBKzD) 318

Lewis wrote “they barely took time to unsaddle their horses, and were digging frantically” when they arrived at one of their Great Falls caches on the return journey. Had tobacco stored. I remember visiting a site called Pompey’s Pillar, near the Montana / South Dakota border. It’s a big rock formation that juts up out of the prairie, and early travelers used it as a trail marker. The rock is soft, and there’s a place under glass where you can still see where Lewis and Clark carved their names into it.

Went to two games in 1994, in DC. One was sorta work related, so got free seats (and good ones, down low with great view). Second one was a favor to my Russian tutor, a classic hilarious guy who had been high up in the Soviet film bureaucracy before emigrating (a few years before the collapse).
First game, Saudis beat the Dutch 1-0 (which a yuuuge deal in itself, obviously, a small wog-ish country beating the blue eyes). Thing is, the one goal was epic. Equivalent of an end-end rush, Bobby Orr-like, in hockey, by the Saudi guy. A year later on a transatlantic work flight, wiling away the hours with the video fare, on comes "top goals of the World Cup". Sure enough, the one I saw was #1. Second game with my russki pal was deadly dull (to me), cheap seats waaay up in RFK Stadium. Germans vs Switzerland? Probably a technical masterpiece to those who know what they're looking at, but - dull. My friend was ecstatic, though, seeing a World Cup in person had been merely a dream during his Soviet life. Another interesting thing about Lewis and Clark. Jefferson gave them instructions to look for the "American Incognitum", a name they gave to the mastodon and maybe mammoth skeletons that were dug up. They thought maybe they still existed out there in the uncharted territories. Jefferson gave orders if they found a live one, to bring it back alive at all costs. Ackshually, I think it was just Clark that carved his name at Pompey’s Pillar. They split up the expedition at one point on the return journey, across what is now Montana.
The single largest expenditure for a single item iirc, was for “Portable Soup”, a kind of iron ration for emergency use. Soup stock and bones and veggies rendered down into a kind of tar. Sort of like “better than bouillon”, but …it probably wasn’t. Another very expensive item was the Chronometer. They had to have a method of keeping accurate time, in order to make celestial observations and determine longitude, etc. Posted by: Common Tater at July 03, 2026 01:20 AM (15vO0) 340

Road trip today. Hauled the mostly-repaired Gravely mower back to its owner's lot, and offloaded it successfully from my trailer, and mowed a couple of circuits around the yard.
Drove to the little hamlet of Balzac to fuel up the 'burb, and noticed something passing strange: gas station is also a U-haul dealer, and parked on the lot were about 3 box vans with Arizona plates. And in front of me at the pump, another one, with a swarthy-looking fellow gassing it up. How odd! Could Alberta be getting a bunch of the illegals self-deporting from Arizona? Then a little shopping in Airdrie, and on to a friend's place to load his '63 Studebaker Lark on the trailer. Seems to have a bad problem with its six-cylinder engine. The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis is very controversial, unbelievably so. One of the opponents of it, a eminent geologist/volcanologist at the U of South Florida Tampa has now become convinced and joined the Comet Research Group, headed by Allen West, which are the main proponents of this. One of the alternatives is a big volcanic event, and his expertise is showing how that can be ruled out. He's also going to run some fancy analysis to look for signatures of some chromium isotope that will go even further to prove it was an extraterrestrial origin impact event.
