Los Angeles refuses to release videos showing the attacks made by criminals on citizens in their transit system. Chris Rufo got one video leaked to him, showing a man dragging a woman off the subway car to rape her.

Every day, thousands of Los Angelenos take a deep breath, step out of their houses, and plunge themselves into a transit experience straight out of Mad Max. The city's buses have become rolling homeless shelters, replete with drugs and feces. Its trains are home to murder and mayhem. As Daquan, a daily rider who works near the North Hollywood station told us, "You could kill somebody down there and just get away with it." The transformation has been swift and stark. Between 2020 and 2025, crime in the system more than doubled. What drove the change? L.A. Metro's dedication to creating an equitable transit system, where all Angelenos--drug-addicted, homicidal maniacs included--can effectively ride free, without consequences. In other words, Angelenos have been condemned to die underground, all in the name of racial justice. Activists and their allies in city government have spent years laser-focused on driving cops from the L.A. Metro's buses and trains. Their argument: making people pay to use the trains is racist. Helming this effort was the Labor Community Strategy Center, its offshoot the Bus Riders Union, and a wider coalition of activists. The center believed that, at root, Metro's fare-enforcement policies were designed to create a "sterile lily white rail experience," as its black indigenous and "[q]ueer" co-director, Channing Martinez, put it. Martinez hoped to pressure Metro, a "South African Apartheid pass system," to institute free fares, abolish the transit court system, and nullify the L.A. Sheriff's long-held ability to enforce fares aboard the trains. In November 2016, the Labor Community Strategy Center filed a civil rights complaint claiming that L.A. Metro was "systematically targeting Black riders." Black riders, they alleged, made up less than 20 percent of riders but received at least half of all citations. As a remedy, the center proposed (emphasis removed) that Metro remove all police and fare-collection staff, institute "[p]olicies of reparation" for black riders, and put an "immediate end to all fare collection."
If you're not enforcing fares -- if you're just letting the homeless enter the trains at will -- how could you ever force a specific ban on a person? That requires cops at the turnstiles looking at people as they enter.
Less than a month later, L.A. Metro's Board of Advisors unanimously demanded that Metro create a plan that would "completely decriminalize fare evasion amongst youth transit users" and ensure that youth fare evaders not be "required to interact with law enforcement." Board members specifically singled out "[y]outh of color" who, they said, were "disproportionately cited for fare evasion." Founding Metro board member Mark Ridley-Thomas, one of the members who proposed the idea, said the motion would address the "long-standing problem of criminalizing this segment of the population." ... Today, Metro hardly enforces fares.... ... Free fares inevitably mean one thing: crime. The system is a hellscape drenched in human feces, where riders are subject to verbal or physical threats, open needles, and screaming homeless people. One million people must contend with the system every day--including some who have been brutalized on buses, trains, and platforms. Take, for example, Mirna Soza Arauz, a 67-year-old grandmother who was fatally stabbed in the throat by a deranged homeless man named Elliot Nowden. Soza was on her way home from an overnight shift at a local burger restaurant when Nowden attacked her from behind. She managed to exit the train at the Universal City Station with blood gushing from her neck. Nowden stole Soza's bag and ran. It wasn't Nowden's first Metro offense. He was banned from riding Metro trains in 2019 after stabbing a college student in the chest on the Expo Line--a ban evidently not enforced. In February 2024, he was arrested for an assault at the same Red Line station where he would stab Soza two months later.
Months ago, we submitted a records request with L.A. Metro demanding surveillance footage of Soza's murder. Metro delayed the request for weeks before ultimately determining that releasing the footage was not in the "public interest." Soza's family disagrees. Her three children signed a consent letter allowing Metro to release the video of their mother's stabbing--which would allow the public to see what Metro tries to hide. L.A. Metro has still not provided the video, against the Soza family's wishes.

No one remembers that this exact thing happened a couple decades ag in San Francisco. Willie Brown as Mayor announced that Muni would stp collecting fares, because of the people caught fare-jumping were black, and thus fares were racist or something.

We went to Yosemite once. Drove very slowly in a line of cars around the main loop and drove right out. Wonderful mountains and valley. Way too many people. It was very disappointing. Had a much better time at Sequoia and King's Canyon, Mt. Lassen and the Redwoods.

Now, I'm just a dumb white guy, but I'm pretty sure the Civil Rights Act of 1964 doesn't allow a fare program to determine who pays based on the amount of melanin in that person's skin content. If the allowing of derelicts to use the public transport for free is the only basis, then it is not a "loyalty" pricing issue, and subject to laws applied by the Federal Trade Commission.
IOW, California is most definitely breaking both criminal and civil law by allowing select individuals free transport and access while charging others for the same service. They documented that illegality by calling it reparations.

That is just stupid on steroids. IF, I doubt it was needed, but IF they needed to allow poor people free rides, they could set up a program to give them free tokens every month. Then they could cut off tokens to anyone they catch vandalizing the transit system, mugging someone, etc.

Maybe this is a good place to mention that another alternative transportation is heavily subsidized: rental scooters and e-bikes.
Those Lime scooters and bikes in cities are set up so that people on SNAP get free rental. Here in Denver they just switched to a different rental company, but SNAP recipients get a daily amount(45 minutes or so?) free scooter rental and greatly reduced e-bike rental.

detroit has made a good start on fixing their city but that took about 1/2 of the actual city to be abandoned by everyone, including the city. You can buy abandoned houses in detroit for $10,000 or less (cash only as is). They are all over the place in abandoned neighborhoods without any city services like police or fire protection.

I've got two dehumidifiers.
In the summer I have to empty the larger one once a day, which is around 1.5 gallons.
The smaller one is like 1.5 liters so I half to empty it at least twice a day.
That gets me more than anything.

The problem is that the West has to abandon some cherished ideas, like equality and freedom. This is very difficult to do because (a) in US it is in constitution, and in other places it is in their rhetoric, and (b) once you go down that path, the Left will use it to crush the Right. This is WHY the muzzies always partner with the Left. The West has one weapon -- to remove all muzzies and muzzie teaching, books, buildings, etc., -- but the Left will prevent that.
In a way, the US is in worse shape as we have that constitution. The best scenario is a king, like what Spain had when they started the inquisition -- they had limitless power to remove muzzies. That seems unlikely to be possible in the West anymore.

Given that my AC is set to 79, that makes me laugh.
We're in a two story townhouse without dual AC zones. I have to keep the downstairs near freezing to keep the upstairs tolerable.

My brother put custom software on his router so that anything trying to get out without permission is blocked. His television keeps trying to phone home, plus one of his kitchen appliances -- some kind of Instant Pot clone.

99 degrees right now. Thermostat is set to 79 today (usually kept at 77 on normal summer days fans run, too) but the AC is straining to keep it 80 degrees inside. Will take it up another few degrees because we have days to go with this.

Split level ACs are good for a second story that needs air in a room. Noise levels are practically non-existent (compared to a window unit). Also cheaper than duct-work and a full unit.

radio station has been airing adds for 'mini splits' to solve hot room(s) issues. Eligble for thousands in rebates and credits. I'm like "why not just get a $200 window unit or two" every time I hear the commercial.
This house came with one of the old 300 pound window AC rated to be able to cool the whole floor. But I can keep temps comfortable with a bedroom size AC that I can lift myself downstairs and one in the upstairs office. I open the window and run the fan in my upstairs bedroom overnight. There will be a few nights that don't cool off good but just a few.
