Dwayne Johnson is facing backlash for staying quiet on politics, with "Star Trek" icon George Takei telling him that "silence is complicity" and "Stand By Me" actor Wil Wheaton adding: "So disappointing to find out he is such a coward."
Johnson told Fox News in 2024 that he regretted endorsing Joe Biden for president in 2020 because it caused division amongst his fans, adding at the time: "My goal is to bring this country together. I believe in that. There will be no endorsement. At this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box."
The blockbuster actor expanded on his newfound aversion to political talk by telling Esquire this month: "What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep -- need, not want -- the main thing. And the main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed and I run towards, is creating. It's art. It's storytelling. I've learned I'm going to keep my politics to myself. There are moments when, hey, there's nothing we can't talk about. If I'm wrong, I'll tell you I'm wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I'll share it with you. Politics is omnipresent and it's forever. I don't like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bullshit that comes with it."

Wil Wheaton has blasted Dwayne Johnson over the actor's decision to stay out of politics.
The "Stand By Me" star and President Trump critic branded Johnson a "coward" after the wrestler-turned-actor said he plans to keep his political views private.
"So disappointing to find out he is such a coward," Wheaton wrote Monday on Threads, in response to a post from George Takei highlighting Johnson's recent comments to Esquire.
Johnson, 53, explained in the interview that he no longer wants to publicly weigh in on politics because he doesn't want it to overshadow his work.
"What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep -- need, not want -- the main thing the main thing," Johnson said.
"The main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed and I run towards, is creating. It's art. It's storytelling."
"I've learned I'm going to keep my politics to myself," he continued. "There are moments when, hey, there's nothing we can't talk about.
"If I'm wrong, I'll tell you I'm wrong. Or if I feel like I got a leg up and this is the right way to go, I'll share it with you."
Johnson, who identifies as an Independent, also said he believes people with opposing political views should talk to one another instead of publicly attacking each other, adding, "I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls-- that comes with it."
Wheaton has long been outspoken about his political views and campaigned for Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential election.

Johnson condemned the July 2024 assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania, saying political violence has "no room" in America.
"Whether you love Donald, don't love Donald, it doesn't matter. They tried to assassinate him. There's no room for that," Johnson said at The Value Conference in September 2024.
"Despite it being who we were in that moment, I still believe in my core that is not who we are as a country.
"So him standing up at that moment, we wanted to see that."

That's considered an aggressive "right wing political" take by the pro-murder left.

Takei insisted on Sulu piloting his own ship in ST6. Which the scriptwriters worked around. The movie overall ended up good, so, hooray for that I guess.
Problem: Takei's delivery was wooden as ever, and it seemed obvious that the reason he got his ship was less because of ego (which he has) and more because he despised most of his fellow actors on the show especially Shatner. He simply didn't want to be in many scenes on the Enterprise.

The thing is, they - the featured players - did have careers after the show ended. They just weren't major stars. Heck, even Shatner and Nimoy had a downturn and were stuck doing guest star roles for a while. Why they would expect to be megastars? I think they got ego inflation when the conventions started. Thinking they were the stars instead of Shatner, Nimoy, and Kelly. Felt they were more important and the heart of Star Trek, even though it was definitely the Kirk, Spock, McCoy triad.

sulu wasn't cast in every episode of the original star trek TV series. He was a back up character. Granted he missed one episode "the trouble with tribbles" because he was filming the green berets with john wayne as a supporting actor but he wasn't on the TV show for about 40% of the episodes.

urged" me to go to not one, but two separate screenings of Wrath of Khan that were then followed by William Shatner in one event and by Takei in another.

Shatner was surprisingly thoughtful and self-deprecating. Takei, on the other hand, was a petulant, spiteful twerp, whose every anecdote reminded the audience of what a trend-setter and hero of gays in Hollywood he had been. Had little digs at Shatner sprinkled throughout. (When asked about his spat with Takei, Shatner was gracious and avoided being baited into saying anything negative.)

Amazing how far little talent but a possessing a deep voice can get you in the entertainment industry.

I guess it was a big deal at the time. From what I have read was sulu was going to be the main character in that episode (after Kirk) but they wrote chekov into that part.

Probably, but it's not a slam dunk. The Ky constitutional provision refers to the gov filling vacancies "in all offices for the State at large."
