I was watching a vid about how cats act in movies.
If "the cat" is doing many different stunts, it's probably several stunt cats. This is one reason movie cats tend to be one color, or something simply-patterned like a tabby. Also interesting is the way they get cats to react, like to hiss on cue. The secret: bring in another unfamiliar cat. youtu.be/AycqebrmBkM Oh and Captain Marvel is noted as a showcase for how cats can be CGI'ed into the shot. Maybe it shouldn't be because that movie was bad. Posted by: Qapla'! at July 01, 2026 07:52 PM (gKWVE) 7

That's classical physics. Now - anyone that's ever done the first thing in ballistics will call bullshit ... because that's Applied Physics. But in the classical sense. Yes. You are right. Because a bullet would have 100% of its force applied on the pure horizontal plane. With no vertical force. Here's a good one. For the maximum distance WITH gravity ... that optimal angle in 45 degrees. And every artillery-man will tell you that's bullshit. But in the theoretical world ? 45 degrees. Re the 45 degree angle. With the variation of air resistance with height, you get more range with a higher angle because you get it up out of the thicker air. It travels farther horizontally even with lower initial horizontal velocity because the extra height greatly reduces drag. Of fucking course. Again ... do you get it ? Theory vs. Reality ? In Theory ? 45 degrees is optimal. Because you split the difference between fighting gravity ... and horizontal projection. So you pay half the tax on the way up. Then get it all back on the way down. My God. Really. Did I not say Theory vs. Reality in earlier posts ? Theory vs. Applied ? I swear. So, nobody ever lived there except the gophers, hence the name. That part of the old farm belongs to a horse stable now, and they call it Stone Church horse stables or something like that. Re the 45 degree angle. With the variation of air resistance with height, you get more range with a higher angle because you get it up out of the thicker air. It travels farther horizontally even with lower initial horizontal velocity because the extra height greatly reduces drag.

Pertaining to a lot of shit ... regarding physics.
The Newtonian shit works quite well ... as a start. And then we have to do corrections for shit. Because our physical world is complicated. You have to compensate for the fact that gravity pulls on both the feather and the lead ball ... but wind resistance. The annoying fact that 14.7 PSI acts on all of us explains some things. Explains a lot in basic fluids. And then we figure out that hydraulics isn't perfect. Because there is no such thing as a perfectly incompressible fluid. Or a perfectly viscous one. Or a perfect conductor or insulator or blah blah blah. Yet. To teach it. To understand it all - at least for me - we have to start with these perfectly imperfect models. You can prove things on paper, but sometimes you have to allow for unforeseen factors.
Hot or boiling water will freeze faster than cold water - it will make ice cubes faster in your freezer than cold water. Of course this doesn’t make any sense, till you try it. Sort of. The cubes will be comprised of about half the former volume of water , much having evaporated away. If the comparison were made in sealed containers, then this wouldn’t hold true. Posted by: LASue at July 01, 2026 08:50 PM (lCppi) OK ... serious ? I'm not going to mock or pick at you in any way. Classical physics says everything works on forces. So for a bullet ? From a perfectly level gun - it travels 100% of the force applied in the "flat" direction. We'd call that the "X" plane. And that bullet - from the time its fired out of the barrel - which is somewhat of a construct just so people can identify with the problem - falls at the rate of gravity. And that monkey ... if it lets go at the same time and the rifle is aimed at the tippy top of its fingers ... drops at the same speed. The rate of the bullet coming out flat doesn't matter. In theory. Thats the point. Posted by: Sam Elliot at July 01, 2026 08:57 PM (7jBgj) 171

“Wind chill doesn’t affect inanimate objects”
This is also bullshit. It’s true, nothing will get any colder than ambient temperature (but then, neither will your ears). I can attest even an unheated shed will be preferable for your car in arctic subzero weather, out of the wind, if you want it to start easier the next morning. Latent heat will be retained to … a degree. Eventually it will reach ambient temperature, but wind most definitely affects how quickly it will achieve ambient temperatures. Just like the human body. When it’s really cold and windy, an automobile engine will never warm up. That’s when folks start putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Posted by: LASue at July 01, 2026 08:52 PM Imagine a rifle barrel parallel to, and 6 feet above the ground. It launches a bullet at 5,280 feet per second. That means one second later, it's one mile away, assuming no gravity (and no air resistance). But there is gravity, and it starts attracting the bullet toward the ground as soon as it exits the barrel. Assuming Earth gravity, it will take a little less than 1/2 second for it to fall 6 feet. That means the bullet will hit the ground 2,640 feet away (shorter, actually due to atmospheric drag, but let's not worry about that.) So, if the monkey were 6 feet above the ground (same as the bullet), and 2,640 feet away (again would be less due to the atmospheric drag we're ignoring), and dropped at the exact instance the bullet left the barrel, they would both be dropping vertically at the same accelleration from gravity (32 ft/second per second) and hit the ground at the same time. The difference is the horizontal velocity acquired by the bullet when fired. Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 01, 2026 09:06 PM (0sNs1) 186
