Let's relax a little with the animals and leave the world of politics and current events outside today.

Meet The PetMorons

Hi KT,

Here you see Purry trying to get the bird (you can see the nest on the drain pipe under the eaves).

He's a very springy cat!

Miley

That's where Publius and I were married, right there on the screen porch.

Springy, indeed! And ambitious!

Dear K.T.,

Meet Precious (f) and Booboo (m), born in '88. Both Siamese mix, one "seal point", one "flame point". When I picked them up from a Humane Society associated lady they were from two different litters nursing on the same female. I was told they were ready to adopt, but the vet I took them to told me they were barely five weeks old. It was only several years later that I discovered by accident that Booboo was deaf. Thank goodness I'd raised them as indoor cats, or he wouldn't have survived long.

They lived for almost twenty years, dying a year apart from kidney failure. Nothing prepared me for the end. My heart and soul went with them, and I still can't talk or write about them without weeping.

I know space is limited, so I'll leave you to select the images that may appear in Pet Thread. Bless you and all the fine pet-lovers whose babies grace your pages.

My AofS handle is "Born Free".

So sorry to learn that you have lost Precious and BooBoo, such good friends for so long. They were clearly loved well. Thanks for letting us get to know them.

About ten years ago a cocky little three-legged pit bull walked into my condo as my latest foster dog. Nobody had shown interest in her in the 18 months she’d been in the rescue, mainly because she was obstinate, judgmental, and wholly untrainable.

So of course I adopted her. My only foster fail in the ten years (thus far) that I’ve fostered.

She spent the next 9+ years antagonizing the most socially awkward dogs at the rescue’s weekly socialization training sessions, turning 30 minute walks into two hour exasperating marathons as she would randomly sit down and refuse to get up until she was good and damn ready, and eating the sausage off my pizza. She also regularly chewed on rocks, tried to kill all the squirrels and possums, and took naps in the middle of the road in my condo association, occasionally at midnight. And never once listening to me.

In short, she was the best damn dog ever.

On Tuesday, 23 June we took our last ride to the vet. She could deal with being a tripod, the arthritis and the hip dysplasia, but kidney failure was the last straw. I held my Eartha Kitt in my arms as she crossed the rainbow bridge.

Long ago I told myself that once Eartha passed I would stop fostering. I’d taken a break from it as her health declined, and thought it might be nice to have some time to myself.

After one night in a dog-free house I was on the phone to the rescue director, telling them in 4 weeks I’d be resuming full-time fostering.

It’s amazing how empty an 1100 square foot condo is without a dog.

Longtime lurker Rabidsquirrel

Thanks for the wonderful photos and description of Eartha. We love her now, too. And it's understandable that you want to foster again. You will be a blessing to another dog.

Got a call this morning from The Big Dummy's Ohio mom. She was with him at the Lima, OH show and she said he was showing some very slight sign of lameness. She was thinking of pulling him from competition.

Her Majesty and I agreed that unless he was in pain she should just show him. He might not win if he was shown but he certainly wouldn't win if he wasn't shown.

The Big Dummy won Best of Breed.

6 One of my dogs vanished Tuesday. I have been a wreck since. What is a stronger word than guilt?

I knew he was coming to his end, but going out like this is too much. Humpty come home. Please.

7 Afternoon, Pet Folken! The two Siamese from different litters were beautiful creatures. As a boy, I knew a Siamese from the upstairs apartment who would occasionally visit us. Her name was "Martini," after one of the cats in the "Mr. and Mrs. North" mystery series. She was quite smart. My brother was only about four or five, still too young not to play rough with a small animal. Martini quickly learned that he was not allowed on the stairs in our place without an adult present. So she would zip up to the top of the staircase and sit calmly to watch him.

I've never had a Siamese myself, though. I understand they are very much attached to their people and live a long time . . . but are also very vocal. As Margaret Cooper Gay put it in How to Live With a Cat, "The banshees take wailing lessons from Siamese cats in heat."

10 The flying fox bat is impressive . . . as if my big black Stirling cat were to wrap himself in a leather cape and hang upside down. Well, okay, the bat's muzzle is much longer than Stirling's.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 27, 2026 03:56 PM (wzUl9)

11 The little red fluffballs lying on big Ned the dog remind me of the late Arizona red tabby when he was very small in 1983. I did not know he'd be a longhair; I thought his fluffy coat was just kitten fuzzies and would vanish as he got his adult coat. Nope. He grew into a big thick-furred Maine Coon-like creature and completely altered my view of longhaired cats. All of mine since then have been long-furred, except for Stirling the medium-hair.

What I want to know is: How were you able to measure him?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 27, 2026 04:18 PM (wzUl9)

19 Our beloved companion for 13 years, Pynchon, our black cat, needed to be put to sleep yesterday. He was in pain from kidney issues. As those of you who have gone through this well know, it is
Very hard no matter how many times you have to do it.

We buried him in our side yard underneath the lilac trees.

20 That photo is a bit distorted - Purry is skinny, just under 9 pounds.

Oh, last night I dreamed about Purry's sister Della. I dreamed about her dirty butt.

That's about as close to a nightmare as I get. It's really a dream of frustration, since she won't allow me to clean it without getting violent.

24 I've never had a Siamese myself..
------

Two of them, males. Each lived approx 19 years. Belmont was unpredictable and could become vicious in a heartbeat. Friends suggested that I should keep a whip and a chair handy.

Toby (aka 'Mike Hammer's Cat'), was pretty laid back. You could almost set the clock by his 10:00 p.m. zoomies through the house. It took a while to break him to harness/leash, but we took regular walks around the neighborhood after dark.

29 Stirling wanted to sit in my lap when I got up from my nap. Now he's curled on the cushion next to me, dozing. Little Dagny may be in her window, her sauna, though it's hardly sauna-ish now (we're getting some rain). Or she may be curled up on the cushion in my desk chair.

The porch has one foot tiles, so when it was out on the porch, I could get close. Moreover, he has left a shed skin, which was easy to measure. That, I trimmed and cut into 6" lengths, laminated them to make bookmarks.

32 Years ago neighbors were telling me about a very large, ill mannered, and very aggressive tomcat. Never saw it until someone shot it - and it ended up dead on the my back porch. It really was a huge cat; a very uniquely colored California Spangled; marmalade base with white spangles.

During that same period, and across town, another Spangled adopted our brewery and took up the job of mousing. Lots of little birdies and mice feeding on spilled barley and wheat cereal grains to keep her busy.

34 "Pynchon" was a good name for a cat. I've never been one to choose human names for my cats. I prefer more exotic names: "Arizona," "Wolf," etc. "Stirling," it's true, is a human moniker, but at least it's unusual. My Siberians have all had human names -- "Tatiana," "Chekov," "Dagny Sophia." Linda's blue-eyed Siberian was "Angelique." She, Linda I mean, prefers to give cats human names.

36 Thanks so much , all. We used to call him the "peripatetic puss" because at night he'd start out on the armchair top. move upstairs to sleep at the bottom of our bed and then go into our son's room. Yesterday he was meowing ( he was not a very loud cat at all) because I think he wanted to see our son for one last time and was too much in pain to get up the stairs, so son came down to pet him and tell him he loved him.

I haven't had to put a cat to sleep for awhile, so I thought it was nice that they had a special bereavement room for this and the vet was very kind.

37 Oh, man. I hate bats. There's probably some traumatic experience in my past that I blacked out of my memory. Rodents with wings (shakes head).

The only thing worse lives in Frank L. Baum's deceased nogging. Flying Monkeys who talk.

38 My stepdad has taken to feeding the chipmucks again.

We've got long tailed ones here except for Bossy, who looks like its tail got cut short. The fur kind of fans out at the end now.

There's also one who races up the pile of rocks to make a flying leap for the top of the septic tank riser (where most of the seed gets scattered. Hasn't made it yet, apparently, but I've suggested we name it Evel Kneivel.

There are also four little ones, whom we think are littermates. They are much bigger this week than last week, almost at their adult growth, i think.

Son named him after Thomas Pynchon, a writer he enjoyed reading when the cat came to us. We have not had lot of human names for our cats except for "Tess" and "Cleo." The others were named "Needles" for his claws ( although he was not a scratcher ) and "Foible" and "Shadow"- another black cat.
