Posted by: Aetius451AD ===== Nvidia has dropped even calling themselves a gaming company anymore. I think revenue from gaming cards is down to single digits of revenue for them. CUDA and their AI/high end graphics cards sold to bizness is what is making them money hand over fist. Posted by: gp ===== That is probably some of it as well but Linux is having its own issues. AI is very good at poking holes--fortunately so far Linux vulnerabilites and really most of Windoze require machine access or agreeing to some really stupid opening trojan files, etc. The bigger problem for Microsoft is that developer Git credentials (probably scraped from AI work sessions) have been used to spike nastyware on that code sharing hub on key programming libraries. - I saw that in Pixy's thread this morning. Since they're doing all the work to have updates until 2028 for enterprise clients, it doesn't seem like it would cost much (relatively) to make that available to all of us sticking with 10, aside from losing leverage on getting us to join the Win 11 AI farm, which doesn't much matter at current prices. So I expect they'll do the same thing next year, and after that, I guess we'll see what memory prices do. Maybe Win 12 will be around by then and less full of AI slop, and thus a more appealing product, too. Posted by: Methos at June 26, 2026 10:36 PM (vSvIl) 86

Is all this chip and memory chasing at the high end? I may need a new computer and it can just be a plain vanilla desktop. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh Buy a late model used one is my recommendation. All modern systems use ssd drives for storage and the prices on those have rocketed up along with RAM. That goes for desktops. If you get a laptop, you may get a better deal because the memory nowadays is usually soldered onto the motherboard so makes it harder for a seller to pull the extra memory and sell it off the books. If you aren't gaming, not as critical but the skyrocketing memory costs are hurting new computer sales and builds. Posted by: whig at June 26, 2026 10:37 PM (E4rtv) 91

Posted by: Helena Handbasket If you see a demand for a password before you see the swirling circle, then it is probably a bios password. If you have internet access, you will have to use the name and brand to figure out how to get around it. One way is by using a live cd of Linux that runs off the DVD drive or a live usb. Fireflies used to be more numerous when I was a kid. We still see some here at Rancho Webworks, but never very many.
Decades ago, on a family trip, we drove up the east side of the Mississippi, and it was very late and the driver, me, was very weary. We found a park where we could pull out and stop for the night. I turned off the headlights, and I thought, I must be wearier than I realized, because there were flashes all over my field of vision. It was one of the most spectacular scenes I've ever encountered. Gazillions upon gazillions of fireflies. So many that they seemed to be flashing in unison, in coordinated patterns - and for the first time, I realized why they were called lightning bugs. It looked like strings of electricity dancing all around the field. The creators really outdid themselves on that bug. Posted by: Helena Handbasket Good. Those can be a bitch as you risk bricking the bios by reverting it. So, dunno if you are familiar with linux but you can download a live version to put on a dvd or on a usb. Shutdown the computer, then try to restart it with the live usb or the burned dvd on it. Ubuntu, Mint, or Debian are good bets. From there, with the right programs installed, you can actually edit the windows password file to reflect what you want. All free. Hopefully, the boot order in the bios goes from usb/dvd first and then to the ssd/hard drive (which you can change the order if the bios has no password). You may have to look on the internet for how to get into the bios--usually a two key combination right at power up. Sometimes it will be very briefly flashed on the screen before boot up. FWIW, 0Patch (zeroPatch), offers paid plans going back to Windows 7 for security patches if you have a critical software program on old iron you need to use and cannot use a container or VM to run it.
I think Panda Antivirus runs updates and will run even on Windows XP SP3 as well as newer systems. Supermium is a safe browser for old windows machines that is updated and patched for security if you must get online with the old machine. Legacy Update has all the old microsoft patches for long ago Windows systems going back to XP3 (and yes, it has service packs for them). The thing to be careful of is third parties offering drivers for old software as some of them aren't kosher. Dig around on international sites as you can sometimes find old drivers on printers, etc. abroad in places like India or Thailand (use English for most of its support websites for companies like Canon, etc.). Well, I scored a big win with buddy's Gravely mower with the freshly-installed Briggs and Stratton engine from a Brand X mower. I could get it to start, and kinda-sorta run, at a slow idle, going "biff-biff-biff-biff" for a few seconds, and then quit. Changed the coil, same thing. Took off muffler, thinking mice might have clogged it with a nest. Same thing, and I could see in the port that the exhaust valve was moving. Took tappet cover off. Wow! Adjusting nut for intake rocker had slacked way off, and intake valve was not moving at all. It was working, albeit very poorly, as an atmospheric valve, like on those old hit and miss engines. But pushrod wasn't moving either... I found what felt like the pushrod seat in the lifter, and gave the rod a tap with a hammer. Clink! I am done with Microsoft. They just cancelled perpetual licenses for 2019 Office for the Mac remotely so the poor sods with it are finding their Office programs neutered. I am probably buying an old Mac laptop simply to run my tax software on it. Taxes are the last thing I need for a Windoze machine to do and I am tired of their bullshit.

Posted by: Braenyard I rarely used my office computers to check anything more than email. Last one was a Mac laptop and main reason I don't have Macs at home yet is because I hate Safari as a browser (all browsers are Safari in Macland and simply shells over them). Chrome is it for Windoze and Linux but you can get an de googled browser Chromium that works for most websites as does Brave and Vivaldi. Firefox has improved its perfomance and still uses its own code for the most part too. Posted by: whig at June 26, 2026 11:25 PM (E4rtv) 182

We would work on them every weekend for the truck to make it through the next week. - Anyway - He bought one truck the owner said was shot. It just wouldn't run right. Dad drove it home and loosened all the tappets then readjusted them. The owner had tightened them down till they didn't clatter. Solid lifters on those old trucks; cut them some slack. It's going to be scorching next week, I was just looking at the weather prognosticationings. Forecast high of 99F next Friday. Now that I'm 29, this heat gets harder and harder to take each year. Posted by: Braenyard I have four browsers on my machine, part of it was because I use Linux at home, I could never be sure what the users on our university's courseware might see. I usually used hyperlinked syllabi to open sources on the net for a text rather than making the poor sods pay for an expensive soon to be outdated text. Microsoft pissed me off during the 2000's, I always kept one system with Office installed (work license current) and an older paid complete version just for compatibility issues. Used Dragon Dictate for years as arthritis and loss of hand dexterity progressed until Microslop bought it and ruined that company too. Taken until now for Linux to catch up with voice dictation using Whispr. Posted by: whig at June 26, 2026 11:37 PM (E4rtv) 196

I got to work on a bike that was in a flood that was over the handlebars. This was hurricane Sandy from 15 years ago. The kid puts 2k into the bike in cosmetics, and then tells me about the flood. I said to the kid, are you insane? The salt water destroyed everything inside. He says no they drained the water, and then it sat for 15 years. I said oh that changes everything...are you fucking INSANE??? He says its jumping out of gear. I said no shit, its destroyed inside. He didn't listen, his rose colored glasses were the size of a Jumbotron . I took it apart, all the aluminum parts of the detent system were rotted away, the shafts were gone, the bearings were gone, the oil came out like mud. He's gonna shit when we call him. And...nobody is talking about the engine. He spent 2K putting lipstick on a pig with NOOO clue what the engine and trans looked like inside. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon --- Probably what the owner did, not understanding he was working on solid lifters. What we did; on running engine, loosen all until they are clicking, then, in firing order tighten until silent and back off until it clicks. Dads rule. First one I remember had a (don't touch it) roll out window. '39? Didn't have a fuel pump or an oil pump either.
