Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Thursday Overnight Open Thread - June 25, 2026 [Doof]![]() From Julie Smith Legend 87-year-old makes hole-in-one, takes legendary photo ![]() Congrats to an 87-year-old man named Lee McFarland for making a hole-in-one—but also for taking one of the best hole-in-one photos ever. McFarland made his ace at Chippewa Golf Club just outside Toledo earlier this week by knocking in a driver from 135 yards out. And did he celebrate his impressive accomplishment? Your damn right he did. A beer AND a cigarette in hand by the time you pluck your golf ball out of the hole is amazing stuff. That guy was ready to rock. And apparently, he kept up the good play as well. As you can see, Lee also shot his age. ----- 45 years ago
![]() I'm sure as writers we all feel the pressure of The Big Scenes—and we know when we're coming to them. Usually, they approach like a landmark in the writing process, if you visualize writing a script like traveling the Oregon Trail. You have to reach them and make sure they count. These scenes are usually huge, pivotal character moments or the big confrontations. Sometimes they are dialogue-heavy, which I find is the bigger challenge than writing straight action. What are characters communicating in the silence between words? What are the minuscule differences between their potential word choices? How can you make sure it's both emotional and realistic? That's why I love looking at scenes like this one from the end of Tombstone, in which Doc Holliday delivers one of the film's biggest gut-punches of dialogue: "There's no normal life, Wyatt. There's just life." Now for the not so good article. Some AWFL writer from ScreenRant takes umbrage with Tombstone when viewed through modern day woke lenses. 8 Reasons It's Hard To Watch Tombstone Today Whether it’s Val Kilmer’s legendary delivery of "I’m your huckleberry" or the sheer, kinetic energy of its iconic shootout, Tombstone feels like an immovable object in our collective pop culture consciousness. Who among us doesn't have a soft spot for this movie? It is a quintessential crowd-pleaser that demands to be watched on a loop, forever cemented as a high-water mark for the genre. However, the nature of the movie—and the culture that consumes it—is inherently fluid. As the years have marched on, rewatching Tombstone through a contemporary lens reveals that even the most beloved classics are not immune to the passage of time. Looking back at the movie in 2026, it becomes clear that its status as a perfect western is complicated by evolving standards in storytelling, character depth, and the ways in which historical narratives are presented on screen. This is not a condemnation of what Tombstone achieves, but rather an exploration of why certain elements that once felt like standard genre conventions now land with a bit of friction. By examining these aspects, we aren't trying to tear down a legend, but rather engaging with the reality of how our perspective shifts three decades later. Let’s look at the elements of this legendary film that make it a bit tougher to process through modern eyes. You really need to read this whole thing for yourself. It's a hoot. Female Characters Suffer From Lack Of Agency Outdated Tough Guy Tropes Feel Cartoonish Today Historical Accuracy Takes A Backseat To MythThose are just a few of the AWFL problems with Tombstone. Go read the article for the rest. And be sure to check out the comments - some of them could have been written by Hordelings! ----- This guy needs to bring that beauty of a weapon to the ranch in October!

Congrats to Lee McFarland on a Hole In One!
He is 87 years old and carded an 87 today! Red Tees - 135 Yards - Driver. That reminded me of a joke..... It was a sunny Saturday morning on the course, and I was beginning my pre-shot routine on #1, visualizing my upcoming shot, when a voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker. "Would the gentleman on the Ladies Tee back up to the Men's Tee, please!!" I was still deep in my routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption. Again the announcement: "Would the MAN on the WOMEN'S Tee kindly back up to the Men's Tee." I finally stopped, turned, looked through the clubhouse window directly at the person with the mike and shouted back, "Would the person in the clubhouse kindly shut up and let me play my second shot?!" Reasons It's Hard To Watch Tombstone Today
Yeah, yeah, we today is so much moar enlightened. Just watched astrophysicist Dr Becky's latest video https://youtu.be/eQRUcAzktXU and in presenting the crew of the next Artemis mission, she praises the increased presence of non-whites but laments that there's no gals on this one, which she proves with geometric logic must be intentional. I missed Hope Sandoval's 60th birthday yesterday, so here's a delightful five minutes of dream pop from when she was younger:
Mazzy Star - Flowers in December [4K Remaster] - 2 Meter Sessions (1996) https://youtu.be/tN0_6yhKfOc It is bittersweet to watch old videos like this. The three men there have all died of cancer: drummer Keith Mitchell on May 14, 2017, violinist William Cooper [Glenn] on March 16, 2001, and composer and guitarist Dave Roback on February 24, 2020, at which point the band was finally over for good. (They had sporadic revivals over the years until then.) After the completion of their third studio album Among My Swan (1996), bassist Jill Emery stepped away from music to focus on the visual arts, and now prefers to be mostly known as a painter. But AFAIK, lyricist and lead vocalist Hope Sandoval and keyboardist Suki Ewers are still trucking along, occasionally doing music still. Posted by: SciVo at June 25, 2026 10:26 PM (Sy6m/) 102

So I went to mow part of my yard with the Dixon mower this morning, reserving the afternoon to work on buddy's Gravely mower. Fire up the Dixon, head off to the unmowed patch, and WTF? It won't hardly steer to the right at all. Left drive wheel not getting any drive, forwards or back. Limp it back up to the shop, get into it, and discover a broken part. I'm going to call it a fulcrum strut; I don't know its proper name. Part of the weird cone-and-cup drive used by Dixon for many years. It's a 5/16" steel rod, with one end threaded a long way for 5/16-24 NF, and the other end has a 2 inch long slug of 1/2" rod welded to it, threaded in 1/2-20 NF. The weld had broken. Bad Peon weld, it only lasted ten years! So I cleaned up the damaged area, made a new weld, and reinstalled it. Mower back in service. Yay!

There is an obscure bit of historical accuracy in Tombstone. It was never determined how Ringo died. He was found by an oak tree, dead with a gunshot wound to the head, possibly a suicide.
In the movie Earp was told to meet Ringo by an oak tree, Holiday and Ringo had their confrontation by that oak tree, Holiday says, "Why Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave," and then Holiday tells Earp that Ringo couldn't handle the strain. I've never seen Tombstone. However, I read a well-written scholarly bio of the historical Earp-- the kind of book with footnotes for each chapter, & a full bibliography at the end. I concluded that the Earp brothers and the Clantons were NOT just two similar groups of thugs-- just alike. Ike Clanton announced quite clearly that he was riding into town to kill the Earps. Wyatt's brother either was, or had been, a Deputy U.S. Marsal (can't recall which). At the time of the shootout, Wyatt was a duly-appointed lawman himself. Attacking the police with firearms is just a very bad idea-- then or now. Ike Clanton was also drunk when he died btw. The firefight lasted 12 secons from first shot to last shot, IIRC. Having read that history book, I see Wyatt Earp as a somewhat commendable historical figure. He spent only a couple of years of his long life as a lawmen, in several different places. The OTHER 50 or so years, he was a bouncer in a saloon casino; a casino owner; and a prize fight referee. He described himself to a journo as having "mostly been a merchant in pasteboard and ivory." He was a delegate to the GOP National Convention in 1920 (I THINK it was 1920). Posted by: mnw at June 25, 2026 10:43 PM (RCjYY) 139

1) octagonal batons with sharp corners for pressure cuts and grip in grappling/control techniques 2) paracord or similar connector (traditional was probably silk for strength) about as long as your fist is wide 3) no ball bearing swivels. I used to practice with them about 1/2 hour a day. Learned the basics from Fumio Demura, got a bit of polish from my then - Sensei who was a personal friend of Demura. They make little digital music players that look like tiny walkmans complete with an lcd screen that plays animation of a "tape" spooling. Why do I have a music player instead of just use my phone? Because getting stuff on a phone isn't always easy, certainly not with an iphone and I like to rip my own stuff with Exact Audio Copy at lossless. And not one of those pricy ones. It was about 50 bucks, has a good headphone amp/DAC, and takes a 256GB microSD. FiiO Snowsky Echo Mini.
And that leads to the following conspiracy theory. I wonder if all these consumer products that are much much cheaper than the name brand items of 4-5 years ago are being dumped onto the USA market by china to get a distributed cloud of devices that can form surveillance nets. This thing has bluetooth. That's an antenna. A lot of "smart" watches are now available at $10-$50 now, same thing. There's a flood of these little devices coming in with various types of antennas. They had these mission types, using letters (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) leading up the actual landing, which was a G-mission. A and B were unmanned tests. The C mission was the manned test of the CSM in LEO, and that was Apollo 7, launched by a Saturn IB. The D mission was the crewed test of the CSM and LM in LEO, and this was supposed to be Apollo 8. Apollo 9 was going to be an E-mission, which was a high elliptical orbit test of the CSM-LM. An almost TLI going to high apogee. Borman, Anders, and Lovell were training for this D-mission. But it became apparent that the D version of the LM wasn't going to be ready, and no way to safely make it ready. The Saturn V and CSM were ready, and so they went to broke and came up with a "C-prime mission". The crews switched because the crew for the D-mission was in heavy training and simulation for that. After the success of both 8 and 9, there was no need for the E mission anymore. They went right to the F-mission, Apollo 10. addendum to 138:
Apparently I exceeded the word limit, so they made me stop typing. Another thing I found interesting about the Earps & the shootout at the OK corral: Tombstone had a group of miners who had formed an auxiliary police force. The Earps could've summoned 20 or so armed men by ringing the town's alarm bell. They chose not to do so, because they didn't want a bunch of amateurs shooting God knows what. Instead, when the Earps decided they needed reinforcemnt, Wyatt sent for his friend Doc-- who was NOT an amateur. Posted by: mnw at June 25, 2026 11:00 PM (RCjYY) 171

Who among us doesn't have a soft spot for this movie?
A great many of us have a soft spot for the movie because we have a soft spot for the actual history. And I'm guessing everything I'm going to read after that sentence is going to ignore actual history and actual context. Posted by: GWB at June 25, 2026 11:02 PM (kU0PQ) 177

The $200 walkman had a ton of clones within a year with the price down around $79. Within 2 years, cheap ones were around $39. At that point, the "real" Walkman was on version 2 and the price was under a hundred bucks. Also, by that point all the variants were ubiquitous.

Another big reason for the C' mission being created was fear the Rooskies might beat us to a crewed fly by of the Moon. Spy photos spotted the ill-fated Russian N1 rocket being set up at a massive new launch complex. Turned out it was just a mock-up, being used for pad integration testing and all that. You get a mock up model of your rocket to test out the layout and connections and ground crew procedures. There is some speculation that the very high ups (CIA and WH level) knew it was a mock-up and not a real rocket, but NASA didn't know. This would've meant a very high level inside source, so it's understandable they would want to protect him at all costs. Anyway, NASA feared the Rooskies might be about launch a crew around the Moon. My recruiter asked me, "are you a homosexual?" I looked at his carefully manicured nails, and wanted to answer, "no, are you?" It was bizarre to see some perfumed princess asking me if I was a homo. This was in 1987.
In hindsight, joining the Army was the right call (meeting my wife, having kids, being where I am now, etc), but seeing an NCO with polished nails was a bit jarring. Posted by: Pug Mahon, aka Agent Frank at June 25, 2026 11:09 PM (0aYVJ) 184

The little snowflake with her 8 reasons Tombstone doesn't resonate with 2026 audiences would be amusing if she wasn't so pathetic. Who says the movie hasn't aged well besides her and a few of her brain dead flying monkeys. Her bio at the top of the article says she is an award winning something or other. Sure it wasn't a trophy for participating, sweetie? However the comments are worth reading.

Appropriating an extinct Auto brand name for a new automotive venture sounds cheesy as Hell to me. Pick something original, like "Joe Truck".
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon ----- The China Method. Purchase defunct US Brand names, attach it to something and.maybe the US consumer will assume it's A US company, and not poor quality Chinese crap.
