Bison2026.jpg

The bison is far more in tune with the American spirit than the eagle or the turkey (Benjamin Franklin's laughable choice for a symbol). It's the size and weight of a compact sedan, and can run 35 miles/hour. It's cranky as f*ck; and will ignore you until it decides to toss you in the air because you are mildly irritating. And then forget about you, because you are unimportant. It has the quiet confidence that that everything else should probably get out of the way. And if you don't? It makes clear that stupidity has consequences.

******

whosonfirst.jpg

It's a cleverly written skit, but the performance is utterly and completely brilliant.

******

The American obsession with celebrity is becoming unhinged from reality. I think it is tremendously damaging to our culture, because the celebrities most worshiped are often vile human beings whose claim to fame is stuff like gangster rap, or even worse, insipid pop music! Artist sells out of trash collected from Taylor Swift's wedding. Yeah...she is an impressive businesswoman, but five years after she stops performing her music will be as popular as the hundreds of other bands that simply faded away.

The obsession comes at the expense of paying attention to more worthy things. Yes, get off my lawn! Seriously, I understand that entertainment is an integral part of our world, but the caustic influence of amoral post-modern entertainers is not good for us as a society.

******

Scary sketchbooks25.jpg

Just look what you dodged! Don't ever say I don't do anything for you maniacs!

******

Don't ask me why these three are on my personal play list. I have no rhyme or reason for what goes on it. If I like the way a song sounds...even a little bit of it...I go for it. And why not? The worst thing that can happen is that I skip it.

******

I find heavy equipment operators to be amazingly impressive. They run multi-ton vehicles as if they were surgeons. And yes, I bitterly regret not becoming one.

There are few concepts that have done more for Man than hydraulics. Imagine a world without it!

******

Somebody sent this to me and claimed it was how they manufacture American Cheese.

11 We once saw a small herd of bison at Yellowstone. Cars stopped on the road. We sat quietly and hoped they did not notice us in our cars.

You could easily see that buffalo was agitated by his dust bath. At least the guy was not trying to pet him.

I have no empathy for the people who try to pet them, get a selfie with them, or dip what used to be their toes off the boardwalks into the pretty blue hot springs of Yellowstone.

Sometimes hiking in the mountains here you come upon a moose eating grass and flowers. We tend to move away quietly vs tourons who take photos.

Wednesday does not look busy -- though I have to call the Fidelity people about that eternally-delayed check, and the IRS about my refund. Thursday I'll have the Buick's rear brakes done. Friday, a mall walk would be good.

66 After high school a friend decided to drive his Mazda 323 cross country from SC to Washington State.

He was somewhere in the big square states and off in the distance he saw a buffalo running down the highway directly at him. He slowed down but did not stop, figuring the buffalo would stop or swerve or something.

He did not. The buffalo hit the car head on, rolled over the top and hit the ground running.

The car was still running and seemed okay so my friend continued his trip. When he took it for the insurance claim they totalled it - because it looked fine, but had buckled the roof.

Around here we've had more school closing days due to black bears roaming around than we have had snow days. It's odd - the bears are pretty calm. Even if Momma bear has young cubs with her. They (usually) don't bother the dogs and will just stand there looking at you if happen on them on one of the trails or in your yards.

They are hell on bird feeders though.

And idiots bought them.

84 I got some sad news today, brought the Lindsey situation home. Had A friend here, a woman in her early 60’s, a lot of fun, energetic, we’d volunteered on some local non profits together and she was the current head of one of them. Just found out that over the weekend she had a pulmonary embolism and died in the ambulance. Very sad for all of her friends.

85 I remember when Charlie Bronson starred in a western moby dick movie called the white buffalo. It would have better if Robert E Howard had written it.

Posted by: Rev. Wishbone at July 13, 2026 10:30 PM (sYM3s)

86 There used to be a small herd of bison that lived in an arranged field on both sides of I-70 west of Denver, as the highway began to climb. There was a tunnel underneath the highway so the beasts could cross from one side to the other to graze. You could exit the I-70 there and park nearby to watch them -- but there was a sign on the fence: "DO NOT APPROACH"!

In '98 I drove down to Great Sand Dunes Park. On the way back I found myself on a string-straight length of state or country highway. "Aha," said I, and ran my car, an '84 Mercedes 280CE coupe, up to 100 just for laughs. It was going well. Then a sign loomed up:

"WATCH FOR BISON ON ROAD"

I slowed down quick.

Not particularly into Country music, but this was respectable. Got into my head for a second, and realized my take on this would have been completely different if I was a deaf man.

Tom Morello plays his guitar with a brick, rather than a pick. Not unlike Neal Young on his Rust Never Sleeps album.

And American Cheese wrapped singles? No wonder they taste so awesome!

89 Last time I was in Yellowstone was late September. Not crowded at all, although the tranny-curious employee in one of the visitor centers was unpleasant.

I think what I disliked about my last September visit to Yellowstone was that the Chinese tour buses were still there, but in far smaller numbers.

I wondered if they had skeeter sized drones scouting the area.

92 Don’t make camp close to a herd of buffalo. Inevitably, one of the bulls will see the flame, and charge it, leading to much loss of human life.

95 When the Beatles played here at a stadium in City Park in May of '64, it was the height of Beatlemania. The four lads stayed secretly at a hotel on U.S. Hwy. 90 in the east of the city, the Congress Inn. From what I heard, the place traded on that notoriety for decades before it closed.

Though I was only ten, I was aware of the Beatles. My Christmas present in '63 had been a compact transistor radio, on which I first heard the Fab Four (thinking their name was spelled "Beetles") on the local AM Top 40 station. I liked their stuff -- but I thought the Dave Clark Five and Chad & Jeremy would have the real staying power.

North Dakota Badlands

Antelope Island, Utah. (I think Johnny Dep filmed one of his faggy fragrance ads there)
