Top Story

It was Prime Day again. Here are the deals you missed. (Tom's Hardware)

There was a reasonable price for the 4TB Samsung 9100 Pro SSD, but not on Amazon and the deal is over and they're out of stock.
For me, the deal of the day was on the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3, cut from A$1000 to A$500. Also not on Amazon, but I scooped one up from local electronics chain JB Hifi.*

They also had the new Gen 5 model (the Gen 4 was a China exclusive), listed at A$1500. It's about 20% faster than the Gen 3 and has a 20% higher resolution screen, which is not enough to convince me to spend 200% more. Particularly since neither of those are issues with the Gen 3 anyway.

* Long time readers may recall that I bought one of these on sale last year. Yes. And now I will have two.

Okay. Honestly I think these are pretty useful, even if jerks are determined to spoil everything for the rest of us.

Woke up early, intended to head back to bed. That didn't happen.

Selloffs of AI stocks started to happen in the U.S. Markets on Tuesday, but the Asian markets have already rebounded apparently. Still, a backstep or two in the craziness that is the AI bubble is a good sign. There'll likely be a few more of those flutters and then (hopefully) POP goes the bubble!

12 I'm a big music lover. I don't really keep up with trends anymore, so now and then some young singer will show up on my radar and I'm surprised. Cole Chaney happened last year for me. He's an outstanding Appalachian musician. The most recent album of his he somehow combined early 90s grunge with Appalachian music. It worked.

This year, it's Ella Langley. She's not just some sultry minx, which she absolutely is, she actually is a pretty good Country singer. I'm listening to her now via YT.

The article sounds like a guy who has just stepped out of an airplane at altitude. He knows he has a pack on his back but isn't sure if it's a parachute or last week's laundry.

He might be better off giving up on coding until the bubble bursts and illuminates all the problems he can't resolve.

The vet assistant and the vet were very nice as well as being skilled . Attitude makes a big difference . He's really not doing well and still. Inot eating. They are supposed to call me today.

I'm having the car's spark plugs changed today; the Buick is at 99K miles and a bit, and the manual says to do it at 98,500. The big red beast still runs impeccably and gets great mileage, but part of how I've kept this car up for seven years is by adhering to the manual's maintenance schedule. And plugs can get balky and hard to remove if you go too long between changes.

41 G&R. As Keynes said “The markets can remain irrational longer than you can stay solvent”. Lots of companies are making record profits right now and their stock prices reflect that. Maybe overvalued. Certainly priced for perfection. The biggest money losers are private for now, OpenAI and Anthropic are the most well known examples. The next biggest spenders are well heeled tech giants like Google, Microsoft and Meta. Those three in particular are particularly pernicious operators but not known for stupidity.

46 Last night, with nothing good on Movies!, we watched an Agatha Christie adaptation from '17, Crooked House, on DVD from the library. A nicely done period-piece film based on a novel from relatively late in her career, the 1950s. Glenn Close and Gillian Anderson head a solid cast. The ending is a thunderbolt, but the main detective (not Poirot or Miss Marple) does no real reasoning, and the revelation comes from a character's diary. And that thunderbolt echoes an Ellery Queen novel of the 1930s. Not bad, though.

The detective drives what he says is a "third-hand" car, a Bristol 405. I'd heard of the brand, but have rarely seen any examples. Think of a four-door, longer-wheelbase Aston Martin.

Oh, the first generation, when LaCrosse replaced LeSabre in the lineup. I looked at a nice example in the summer of '07, but passed because of the dealership's attitude, and wound up with the PA.

51 Also on DVD this week, we have an Ian McKellen vehicle, The Critic, and the 1946 (?) The Red House, a rural Gothic with Edward G. Robinson. I've watched the latter on YooToob, and found it compelling and worth watching again.

And McKellen always grabs the screen. I looked for that 1930s-dress Richard III that he did some years ago, set in an alternate-universe Britain descending into fascism under Richard, but couldn't find it.

Cadillac, I think, is the only US manufacturer still providing more than one car or sedan for us to buy. Ford and Chrysler both offer only trucks and SUVs, except for the Mustang, and I think the Charger and Challenger -- though they may be gone too. I buy used, so GM has already gotten their money from the first owner.

If something happens to the LaCrosse, and I can't find a '17-'19 model in good shape, I'll either have to go Cadillac, or step over to a Toyota like an Avalon or Lexus ES; or maybe even to a Hyundai Genesis or Equus.

Spacex and about three others next horizon. It’s already available on ATT for emergency calls. Data plans are available for the location challenged. I’d expect it to be widespread in 3 or 4 years. Maybe sooner.

Back when my kidneys were going and dialysis was coming in the future, my wife wanted to go out to eat at a nice place, so we found a Peruvian restaurant.
We had this cool purple potato drink, ate beef hearts in tomato sauce, and had lucuma ice cream for dessert.
A few hours later, while in bed, my heart started beating 3 or 4 beats a second (200 or so beats a minute). Turned out each of the foods I had eaten were very high in potassium, and my kidneys weren't flushing it out fast enough...
