It's Too Darned Hot Cafe

sangiovannibiancolombardy.png
San Giovanni Bianco, Lombardy

From yesterday, but it fits the "Too darned hot" theme of tonight's cafe.

A little cool-down.

Dog enjoys the prow of a boat.

Otter bathing beauty.

Dog waits for his toys to dry.

Republican pounces.

Dog averts a possible injury.

Dog is very happy to see mistress after three days.

Another reunion, this one after (the vid claims) three years. Let's say it's been a minute.

Oh the heat!

Cat doesn't know what's going on but it's very exciting!

Someone set up a martial arts training dummy for a kangaroo, which seems unwise.

Lots of clever takes on intrusive tech -- I loved the targeted advertising based on retinal scan. Of course it had to go ridiculously over the top in the chase scenes. It's Tom Cruse! Yesterday the transformer on the power pole at the corner of the yard shorted out and vaporized the coax cable for our internet, scorched the back of the house, and set the pole on fire. 53 Here it is "The 2002 science fiction neo-noir film Minority Report, based on the 1956 short story of the same name by Philip K. Dick, featured numerous fictional future technologies which have proven prescient based on developments around the world. Before the film's production began, director Steven Spielberg invited fifteen experts to think about technologies that would be developed by 2054, the setting of the film...He wanted to consult with the group to create a plausible "future reality" for the year 2054 as opposed to a more traditional "science fiction" setting. Dubbed the "think tank summit", the experts included architect Peter Calthorpe, Douglas Coupland, computer scientist Neil Gershenfeld, biomedical researcher Shaun Jones, computer scientist Jaron Lanier, and former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) architecture dean William J. Mitchell."

Whereupon I found that the septic tank that was pumped 3 months ago was backed up into the showers. We tend to not realize that Judeo-Christian values means we instinctively fall back on the individual in the image of God. Other religions and certainly atheism do not have that value. Christianity helps.

"Be good while you're here or you'll regret it for the rest of eternity" can make evil turn good.

"Be good while you're here or you'll reincarnate and get to do all the raping and burning and pillaging and raping for another lifetime" just isn't as persuasive.

178 I just saw the story where a talk by Talarico has been found, where he openly describes himself as “a Christian who hates Christianity.” Oh, that’s just perfect, that’s his theology in a nutshell.

Those who said Cornyn would be a better candidate in the fall were absolutely and shamelessly wrong. You want to know why?
Because Cornyn would have seen this and said “well that’s not nice or gentlemanly to talk about, so we’re just going to ignore it.”

Paxton is gonna make sure that everyone in Texas hears that line 10 times a day all through October.

His book is good but I always found Townsend to be a controversial figure. He’s was kinda this well off Ivy League educated guy with what seemed more like biases than learned experiences which ultimately clouded his pronouncements. Don’t get me wrong I think he got a lot right about China but there are some important things he missed. I also think he was largely right about the Japanese. I’m also not one given to conspiracy but some of the things about FDR going after him because Townsend knew FDR was pushing towards war with Japan ring partially true. YMMV

I think it was about it's subject. The US was roaming the inland waterways of China and the Chinese didn't like it. It was a fact. In the 1930s (when the story took place) Nationalist China had finally found its strength and wanted the foreigners out.

That's it. You can read Vietnam into it, but it came out before Vietnam was much of a thing.

But China was, and so I think that's what it was about - how we "lost" China. Another factor is that it was now 30 years since those events had happened. That's often when people do historical films and reflect on a past that is fading away. Wait too long, and everyone who remembers it is dead.

212 Correction: It is in 1926 (I thought it was 1930, my bad).

So yes, the Nationalists are building their strength and in 1928 the Northern Expedition unifies the nation. But in the south, the Nationalists are already gaining control.

So the interval (40 years) is very similar to other flashbacks. Lots of World War I books emerged in the early 1960s for that reason. The vets are getting up there, and want to tell their stories.

One thing I’ve been taught throughout my education is to try and determine people’s motives, objectives and morals before you step in. When you liberate the oppressed make damn sure you know which side that is. The Taiping Rebellion was interesting in that regard. People jumped right in before they really knew what the motives were. That is until they witnessed the inhumanity and slaughter.

Not really. The treaty ports and trading rights were extracted at gunpoint. The interesting this is that the ChiComs have to really distort history to make the US a villain in the Unequal Treaty era, since we were the *only* power that did not want a concession. We wanted an Open Door, where all foreign powers could trade on the basis of equality with no carve-outs are special rights.

The Asiatic Fleet was there to secure American interests and keep banditry down, and I think the movie shows that we got along with the Chinese quite well until Nationalist fervor took hold. At that point the crew is basically just trying to live through it, breaking out to the coast.

244 When I bought Villa Gorilla, there was big honking C-band dish outside and the previous owners threw in a receiver, so I used that for several years.

Then I got a DirecTV system, and was very happy for a long time, until I gave up TV watching on general principles.

I was an early adopter of Starlink, and my original dish is still going strong.

Through it all, there was a cable TV doghouse at the corner of my lot. I'm proud to say I have never succumbed to the temptation of using it.

It is a party with views that are antithetical to our democratic republic. It seeks to subvert our ideals and system of government by any means possible including murder. It is not going to stop until we curb stomp them out of existence. The unfortunate part is it is attracting a lot of like minded and disaffected people who are swayed by their lies and unrealistic promises. It’s really an insurgency because it’s no longer a debate about how to achieve what is best for our country. Their motives are to destroy it using the very auspices which underpin our society- the social contract, law, liberty, freedom and the Constitution. We must win this battle.

This is the correct answer. China is obsessed with symbols of power, so having aircraft carriers means China is also powerful. Their carriers are garbage, and the latest "supercarrier" uses magnetic catapults but relies on conventional (oil) power, meaning it has pathetic endurance. Can't cross the Pacific without a train of refuelers.

Carriers are NOT obsolete, as the war against Iran showed. Nuclear carriers have incredible endurance, stand-off strike capability and a great deal of flexibility in terms of what type of operation. Hypersonic missiles are being hugely oversold. Carriers move. They move constantly. So course corrections are vital, but if a carrier is over the horizon and your satellite comms are jammed, you are firing blind.

309 We are having terrible mosquito swarms right now. Even with the city treatment and our own lawn treatment, they are really bad.

310 Lombardy got its name because the Viking barbarians who held it in Days of Yore had Long Beards.
Hence, Lombardy.

311 The Great Lakes are always fresh, sometimes frozen.

What this means is the water is less supportive. Freighters can't carry as much cargo as they can in salt water. Swimming is more difficult.

Thus, sailing requires a bit more skill and caution.

312 Yes, I was looking at residential. If I didn't already have a reliable (yes, I said it) cable internet I'd go for Starlink.

315 We had to replace our toaster not so long ago. I can't remember how much it cost, but it was much closer to $45 than $450. No internet, though. All it does is toast bread.
Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 23, 2026 09:41 PM (O0L8i)

If your toaster doesn't connect to the internet, you won't be able to have your car tell it to turn on so you are greeted with the smell of fresh toast as you walk in the door!

Gonna have to disagree with you on the swimming and sailing.

322 You can buy a depuffing wand at amazon. It depuffs your face. Only $119 was $170. To depuff your face.

So this might be controversial but I like a puffy face on a gal. However, all the starlets go through this phase where after they achieve stardom thanks to their adorable puffy face, they go on this crazy diet and botox kick and the puffy disappears completely. Maybe this wand is to blame too. Screw the depuffing wand.

324 There was a toaster a while back that would toast a weather report on your toast. I wouldn't pay $350 for it though.

325 Ideally, a road trip to Bandon Dunes, get some golf in, then just randomly drive up the coast, into Washington. No itinerary, just driving around, looking at the west coast.

Fly into Eugene, or Medford if you want an adventure. It is a good road, but it is through trees and trees and trees and trees.

326 I’d love to sail the Great Lakes. Anyone do e that?
Posted by: nurse ratched. at June 23, 2026 09:25 PM (A5RD0)

There are some ferries on the Great Lakes. One that I know about runs from Manitowoc, WI, to Luddington, MI. There's the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc focused on the Great Lakes. Naval buffs can also tour the USS Cobia.

This ferry's website is https://ssbadger.com

There's another between Milwaukee, WI and Muskegon, MI. It's a shorter distance, and a newer ferry. That's at https://www.lake-express.com/

331 Today, here in NE Okla., we have enjoyed alternating sunshine and heavy storms. Or, as we call it, Spring. Okay, it's "officially" (for certain values of "official") Summer, but just barely.

We managed to get some of the lawn mowed so Daisy Dog's tennis balls don't get lost, although she did drop one somewhere while chasing a squirrel. It's nice, generally, but I can already feel the days getting shorter and Winter setting in. Okay, not really, but, but, it's the post-solstice dread trickling into the back of my mind.

Is it ONTea-time yet?

332 Pretty picture of Italy & fun animal pics, as always. Thank you.

One year today since I lost my dog, Journey. I still miss her & occasionally think I hear her on the 1st floor, waiting for me and her evening treats.
