Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Night ONT - June 24, 2026 [TRex] Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans. The bar is open and freshly re-stocked. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and join the fun. Good will offerings of amusing puns are encouraged. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. This is a Tucker, Candace, Megyn and Bill Kristol free zone. Please. Will reading the content earn you free Triscuits? No. Will it entertain and inform while you eat your Triscuits? Perhaps. Only one way to find out. [Top photo: Carla Manneh]![]() A giraffe is on the loose in the Texas Hill Country, and her owners are asking for the public's help to bring her home. The Real County Animal Rescue-Shelter posted on social media Monday that Cedar Hollow Ranch is searching for "Gracie," a missing giraffe last seen west of Leakey. According to the post, Gracie has rounded ears and was recently spotted on a game camera in the area. Her owner is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to Gracie's capture and safe return. Is it really that difficult to spot a giraffe? They're tall and don't look like anything else. Are there herds of giraffe in Texas and this one blends in? Maybe Texas giraffes are more skilled in the art of camouflage than the average giraffe. ![]() We rarely describe our products as essential or practical, but this Glow-in-the-Dark Itty Bitty Celery is both! You get eight stalks of 1-1/4" tall, soft vinyl celery. During the day, you'll enjoy the reminder of celery superiority, but at night, this celery really shines. It glows in the dark! And, just for clarity's sake, the celery "stalk" officially refers to the whole bunch of celery, each piece you pull off is referred to as a celery rib. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is no truth to the rumor that TRex is working as assistant to the assistant's assistant coach for the US World Cup soccer team. Working for 5yrs in an ED/Trauma unit made me think this way. I am enjoying so much the UK and Europeans loving the USA and saying basically fake news told them not to love us, our food, our hospitality and our college stadiums. Some don't want to leave. I don't watch the games I watch the fan's youtubes. "A giraffe is on the loose in the Texas Hill Country…"
Just a short hop to Oklahoma. We were on the watch. Wild animal preserves and such like do leak critters now and then. Kangaroos. Tigers. Always amusing, in a "hope they don't eat me" value of amusing. One of my favorite stories was a few years ago, an older Oklahoma feller is driving along at night on a rural road, when he suddenly shouts to his wife, "ELEPHANT!" I can imagine recognizing such an unexpected beast, even reacting in time not to hit it (as we're used to dodging deer or loose cattle or horses), but I think I'd need a several seconds of processing time to be able to verbally identify it. "Looky that, honey! Don't that look like one o' them gee-raffs blocking the road…?" 💥crash!💥 Posted by: mindful webworker - is that a rhino or a hippo? CrAsH at June 24, 2026 10:18 PM (Is2cY) 47

T-Rex...I happen to like Eye of the Tiger and thank you for the music.
My husband and I have found the most horrible, idiotic, nauseating series to watch called Sweet Magnolias. It wins in all categories of very bad cinema. This should tell you how bad it is (even worse than Virgin River) for dialogue and acting and make up. We mock them and blow through the ghey parts that make us gag. Because, you see, there is a gay couple, of course there is.Plus 3 married couples who always have problems and idiotic dialogue of "unpacking problems" or a tequila night where the women "pour it out." One woman, bless her, is the size of a tank. And their make up is not good at all. Have mercy! Another woman has the teeth of a horse and a fake "refined" Southern drawl we mock a whole lot. She's probably our favorite and has about 5 hairstyles per show. She just got married and then sang to her groom at the reception to our glee. My husband calls them the Fagnolias vs Magnolias. We are not even sure why we subject ourselves to this punishment, yet we do. It is very bad and if renewed I do believe it is a sign of end times. My brother had a D8 CAT - think his was a few years older than the one in the video. It used a cable pulley to raise & lower the blade instead of hydraulics. Essentially, the weight of the blade was more than sufficient to push it as deep into the ground as you wanted.. I found that astounding. Also, the starter motor was a 2 cylinder gas engine... significantly larger than what you'd find on a lawn mower. Pure awesomeness

I expect Trump to push and highlight a very big assistance effort for Venezuela due to the earthquake (and, looking at the structural damage, the after-shocks that will probably bring down still more buildings, though presumably already emptied of people). We are the biggest and best at disaster relief (a part of the former USAID - obviously one doing what the public thought it was doing - that few knew or know about).
Israel has one of the best search/rescue capabilities for earthquake situations (including canines). Expect them to be on the ground there quickly too. Decent quake off Ifate prefecture in Tohoku, Japan (northern Honshu), but so far no damage or serious tsunami reports. Posted by: rhomboid at June 24, 2026 10:24 PM (U/Byj) 65

Problem with earthquakes is your home is probably now broken. It can fall down around your ears maybe not during the quake - probably not during the quake - but at any time over the next few weeks. You have to call in someone to fix all the cracks but that someone is likely working on important city buildings first.

Posted by: rhomboid at June 24, 2026 10:24 PM (U/Byj) ****************** I have an unscientific theory of waiting after a big one somewhere, for a big one on the opposite side of the world. So far it holds true as the plates settle or whatnot. The largest I've been in was a 6 at 7am when we were still in bed. Instead of staying in bed, on abdomens with pillows over our heads, we ran to the landing and watched the chandelier swing. Not good. I figure we'd be found two floors down in the basement like a couple after Pompeii. My first, in college, was over a 5 and I was in a basement apt alone. In the kitchen I felt like I was on a ship and thought, "This is weird, I have had no beers to get the spins." Noted the electric clock cord swaying. The house was 100yrs old and I heard walls creaking. With every earthquake there is a boom before you feel it. Then a bit of sort of vertigo. Called my friend who verified an earthquake and neither of us knew what to do, being from MS. At the time you were supposed to stand in a doorway, which I think is old news now. That combine thread is going to be a sad one. Every modern one is the size of my field. They'd already started, 50 years ago, having demolition derbies in Iowa and Nebraska with the 'normal' ones I would see working in the fields when I was young. Now, the spare parts from those are about used up, and quite a few people are hobby-farming on plots just the right size for them.
The pony motor starters on Cats had megaphones instead of mufflers; on a cold morning you could hear them yowl from a mile away, and they had to warm up and really scream to turn all that mass over. The Sixty models started another way: there was a deep hole in the flywheel, exposed of course, into which you fitted a steel bar about six feet long. Walk her up onto top dead center, preheat the glow plugs, prime, and yank that sucker for all you're worth. If it fired, it flung the bar out, sometimes 20, 30 feet away. Heads up. And beller, O Jesus. Once you had one running, you did not shut it down. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at June 24, 2026 11:11 PM (zdLoL) 168

I did some mowing in the yard today, then fired up the tractor and used it to move some objects in the yard that needed to be mowed under. One such was an old grain auger. It's on wheels, and the low side rests on the ground. So I put the loader bucket under the low end, picked it up, and trundled it in a right-angled turn, so I could mow where it had been sitting. Plop! A bird's nest fell out of the top end, along with two half-grown blackbird fledglings. They hopped around on the grass, but were apparently a few days short of being airworthy. Either they will learn to fly real quick, or some predator will get them.

Gimme earthquakes over tornadoes and/or hurricanes any day. California may be Mother Nature's Etch-A-Sketch but we don't have "earthquake season." We do pay attention tow hat's underneath our house's lot: solid Franciscan sandstone. Which doesn't shake like the bay fill underneath our first home, which shook like hell during the quake of '89. Haven't felt many in our current location. DH got the alert for the (supposed) 6.0 quake that was about 130 miles north of us. Turned out to be a 5.6 which is slightly strong but not considered to be "severe" by our standards. They need to tune that alert system, which is always Crying Wolf. It was so far away we didn't even feel it. For judgement purposes, a quake has to be at least a 4.0 to be positively felt and make any sort of impression.

But I have been around men who were smart, seemed like any other; but when an emergency strikes they fall to pieces and can do nothing. I’m reminded of the report of General Rosecrans after the collapse of his army at Chickamauga; an observer reporting to Lincoln that as the reports of the disaster came in, “the General began to wander about like a duck that had been hit upon the head.” Posted by: Tom Servo at June 25, 2026 12:24 AM (kmEMr) 243

If I moved to Kansas I would probably buy one of those converted missile silo homes. Good luck getting my ass when I'm encased in a concrete bunker designed to take a direct hit from a nuclear warhead, Mr. Tornado!
My mother was born in raised in the SE portion of Kansas that was frequently called "Tornado Alley." Most of her family would spaz out and run to the storm cellar anytime the sky turned dark. Posted by: PabloD at June 25, 2026 12:31 AM (tTZHu) 256

He was on weird work shifts at the time. Posted by: 13times DH slept right through the strong 2014 South Napa quake (6.0); I was hundreds of miles north in Eureka at the time. He thought the cat jumped on him and went right back to sleep. Had to do a lot of clean-up at my mother's house after that one; Mom's cupboards were affixed to the east-west running walls of the kitchen. As the shaking ran strongly north-south, every glass in her house broke as they were flung out of the cupboards. There was shattered glass everywhere. The MIL's cupboards were on east-west walls and she had one glass crack when it tipped over, but nothing leapt out of her cabinets. Her hot water tank tipped and had to be replaced, though. Last year and this year, hardly any gray in May, or gloom in June (unless you're right on the coast) in San Diego. Spectacular, ridiculously perfect weather (which is not unusual). In addition we've got very early warm* ocean temps. Haven't been in but need to go. Yuuuge South Pacific storm 10 days ago produced monster surf on south-facing beaches, more normal now.

Pancaked high rises - when that happens (and it’s happened in China) it usually means that very little rebar was put into the structure, and way too much sand was used in the concrete mix.
I’ve wondered if that’s how the Three Gorges Dam was built. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 25, 2026 12:54 AM (kmEMr) 295

Yeah, 13, most folks in Napa didn't even lose power or water except a fairly small area directly downtown and some folks on the west side of the valley where the fault trace runs. Highway 29 was broken right through there but only needed a quick patch job. Lots more folks lost their old brick chimneys, though.
