Long ago and far away... When my folks lived in the Hill Country, and we would visit them for the weekend or a holiday, we often couldn't leave, because of our jobs, until around 8 or 9 at night which was fine because the traffic was light and once you got into the countryside the roads were nearly abandoned as we rolled through between 12-3am. Anyway, all of the small towns we drove, because of their minimal street lighting had streets that looked very similar to this. Posted by: naturalfake at June 26, 2026 09:54 AM (iJfKG) 121

Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at June 26, 2026 09:45 AM (2YhKe) ----------- A few days ago I was visiting a friend in Cedar Rapids, IA -- and we went to The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library there. Pretty interesting history, but the most amazing thing was that they literally picked up and moved that 3 million pound building to higher ground and a new foundation (in 2011) (11 feet higher) following a horrible 500-year flood of the Cedar River that left it half-submerged (destroying many exhibits and artifacts -- while of course destroying many other structures downtown). Quite the engineering feat; they had a short film of the event, but didn't show how they initially raised the building before moving and reinstalling it. This scene reminds me of my granddad's farm on the eastern Colorado plains. There was a sizable open area surrounded by the farmhouse, garage, chicken coop, milking barn and various other outbuildings. All us cousins would set up a tin can near the pole light in the middle of this area and a rousing game of "Kick the Can" would take place. Hiding in the dark shadows around the perimeter waiting for the opportunity to dash in and kick the can, releasing the captured players before the one who was "It" could beat you to the can and count "one two three on Seamus" thus capturing me.

"What did you learn at Ace's today?"
A barn quilt is a large, painted replica of a traditional fabric quilt block, typically made from plywood or composite aluminum and mounted on the exterior of barns, houses, or other structures. These squares, which usually measure 4x4 feet or 8x8 feet, feature bold, solid-color geometric patterns like the Ohio Star or Bear’s Paw designed to be visible from a distance. While the modern movement began in 2001 in Ohio as a tribute to quilting heritage, the tradition has roots in 17th-century Central European immigrants who painted symbolic designs on barns to identify their farms or signal safe havens. Today, they serve as a form of Americana folk art that preserves regional history, honors family legacies, and promotes rural tourism through organized quilt trails across the United States and Canada. [From the Smithsonian Institute's .edu website on this painting:]
"These (1946) images of lonely farm buildings symbolized traditional farm life and reflected Ault's desire to isolate himself from others. He often incorporated religious imagery into his works, and here, a single bright light marks the center of a cross formed by the power lines. But the bleak landscape and vast expanse of darkness threaten to overwhelm, and this painting perhaps reflects the artist's depressed state of mind." I do love the disconnect on data centers among the left. The elites want them because they see $$$. The line level folks though see green space getting destroyed and massive new energy sinks - things they were told are bad. I do expect in the next couple of years almost the whole of the left will be onboard with data centers though because the people controlling the left want them and the left is very heirarchical. @NYCMayor The Supreme Court just launched one of the largest attacks on immigrants in modern American history. Thousands of Haitians and Syrians now risk losing the right to live and work in the country they call home. This decision will cause enormous pain across the five boroughs. Here in New York, it falls hardest on our Haitian community, one of the largest in the country, alongside Syrian families. I joined labor leaders with 1199SEIU, elected officials, and advocates to send a clear message to immigrant New Yorkers: You belong here. The Supreme Court just launched one of the largest attacks on immigrants in modern American history. Thousands of Haitians and Syrians now risk losing the right to live and work in the country they call home.
This decision will cause enormous pain across the five boroughs. Here in New York, it falls hardest on our Haitian community, one of the largest in the country, alongside Syrian families. Mike DeWhine (OH):
"Today, the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling allowing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to be canceled or expire. "Today’s decision is a legal decision. As I have stated in the past, the policy to remove these individuals from this country is a mistake. "As a result of today’s ruling, the over 10,000 Haitians who have been living in Ohio (mostly in the Springfield area) legally through TPS will now be here illegally and will be subject to immediate deportation. This also means that while these Haitians were working and contributing to our community and economy yesterday, today it is now illegal to employ them. "The situation in Haiti could hardly be much worse. The violent gangs run most of the country. The government barely functions. And, the economy is in shambles. "Further, our federal government has an advisory against traveling to Haiti, and our Federal Aviation Administration prohibits U.S. carriers from flying there because of the danger to planes of being shot at by the gangs. "But, more importantly, changing the immigration status of these individuals is not in the best interest of the United States nor Ohio." Trump has often mentioned taxing this money, but don't know that he's ever actually done anything about it. Posted by: Sponge - F*ck Cancer at June 26, 2026 10:54 AM (2YhKe) 299
Yesterday, working on a tough project, I got one of those AI doom loops:
It tells me to try A. I try A, and it does not work. I tell it. It says 'well of course A does not work because of X. Try B instead.' I try B, and it does not work. I tell it. It says 'yes, naturally B does not work because of Y. Try A instead.' That happens sometimes. Posted by: gp at June 26, 2026 10:54 AM (Jr5Lq) 300
