From Wiki:
Ivan Le Lorraine Albright (February 20, 1897 – November 18, 1983) was an American painter, sculptor and print-maker most renowned for his self-portraits, character studies, and still lifes.[1] Due to his technique and dark subject matter, he is often categorized among the Magic Realists and is sometimes referred to as the "master of the macabre". Posted by: Heroq at June 24, 2026 09:33 AM (rjPWf) == Gas is a cash business, even the big guys have to pay for each tanker of fuel as it is received. 😬 Right off the bat, pass hanging but here's the story -
Art Institute Chicago, Into the World There Came a Soul Called Ida Date: 1929–30 Artist: Ivan Albright (American, 1897–1983) About this artwork Holding a mirror, powdering her chest, and surrounded with accoutrements of fashion and beauty, the figure portrayed here does not necessarily inspire thoughts of youth and vibrancy. Rather, as one critic put it when this painting was first exhibited, he saw a “woman with flesh the color of a corpse drowned six weeks.” Ida Rogers herself was 19 years old at the time she posed for the artist. With his hyperbolic version of realism, Ivan Albright laboriously transformed his sitter into a vision of his own making. The painting is less a portrait than a meticulous musing on the passage of time and the relationship—both powerful and fragile—between mind and body. Also: Fleshing Out Ivan Albright In part, "At a base hospital in France a surgeon put Albright’s drawing ability to use, employing him as a medical draftsman documenting the wounds and injuries of soldiers returning from the front." WWI --- Sunshine and blue skies, but today still has the feeling of an off day. This is why so much of 20th century art pisses me off. An artist with obvious talent (look at the table and accoutrements and the chair) chooses to show the ugly side of everything. This is not the tragic quality of Rodin's sculpture "La Belle qui fut heaulmière" denoting age and loss. This 'art' emphasizes ugliness and lack of awareness with no redeeming aspects. The blocky, lumpy body and features in colors that are unfit for the living flesh, the confidant posture that belies the reality of her appearance, and the lack of any real femininity remaining are completely unattractive. A rotting corpse applying makeup to cover up the decay.
It's one thing to use art to demonstrate vanity and lack of awareness. It's another to make the image so repulsive, deliberately, that it drives the audience away. Posted by: JTB at June 24, 2026 09:57 AM (yTvNw) 112

Re: gas prices
State taxes vary wildly. Can’t really compare apples to apples gas prices between regions. Even within states, cities and counties can add their own gas tax. I used to live on the border of two states. Gas was always 30-40 cents cheaper on one side. Mainly difference in gas tax but also difference in minimum wage, property taxes and other factors. There were 4 gas stations on the main road, just inside the state line, 2 on both sides of the street. Always packed with cars from the other side. Funny thing was all 4 always had the exact same price. One would raise price by 2 cents the other 3 would match. One would lower by 5 cents the others would match it. While equally repulsive to look at, this is a major step up from the vile dog vomit featured yesterday. This is actually a technically competent, maybe even masterful, peice of a repulsive subject, while yesterday's painting, heck, pretty much everything by Pollack, is literally "Let me splash some paint on a canvas and see what happens."

From the Art Institute of Chicago's description:
1929–30 Artist: Ivan Albright (American, 1897–1983) About this artwork: Holding a mirror, powdering her chest, and surrounded with accoutrements of fashion and beauty, the figure portrayed here does not necessarily inspire thoughts of youth and vibrancy. He looked at a beautiful woman and transformed her into a vision of ugly vanity. Thanks, guy! Posted by: AMartel at June 24, 2026 10:29 AM (otvi3) 209

The reason American letters suck now is because of publishers and horns 40/ fs Posted by: gKWVE at June 24, 2026 10:40 AM (CAahN) Eh, the reason Am Lit sucks now is because almost everyone is writing for the movies. Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with genre fiction. The business of writing is to make money in the end. You can't write if you can't eat or can induce aa big Sugar momma to keep you in Brazilian Pizza. But, writing for movies writing process goes something like this- Think of a high concept Mash high concept into genre and story easily turned into a movie. Write well enough to get a Hollywood producer to have his people read it. As you can see you're constrained already in how or where your story will go. Gives a patina of sameness to every story out there. Sad. But there it is. Posted by: naturalfake at June 24, 2026 10:57 AM (iJfKG) 276
